Accusations of dishonesty, bad ethics and even illegality flew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the man behind it, Mr. Colamedici, insists it was not a hoax; rather, he described it as a \u201cphilosophical experiment,\u201d saying that it helps to show<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>how A.I. will \u201cslowly but inevitably destroy our capacity to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Colamedici is an Italian publisher who \u2014 along with two A.I. tools \u2014 generated \u201cHypnocracy: Trump, Musk, and the Architecture of Reality,\u201d a buzzy text <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Hypnocracy-Trump-Musk-Architecture-Reality\/dp\/B0DY1JK3CK\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ostensibly written by Jianwei Xun, the nonexistent philosopher<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In December, Mr. Colamedici\u2019s press printed 70 copies of an Italian edition that he supposedly translated. Still, the book quickly gained outsize attention, being covered by media outlets in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.faz.net\/aktuell\/karriere-hochschule\/hoersaal\/hypnocracy-hypothese-gibt-es-jianwei-xun-wirklich-110380640.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Germany<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/technology\/2025-03-26\/hypnocracy-the-regime-to-numb-critical-thinking.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Spain<\/a>, Italy and France, and being <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hec.edu\/en\/ai-and-democracy-coming-civilization\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cited by tech luminaries.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHypnocracy\u201d describes how powerful people use technology to shape perception with \u201chypnotic narratives,\u201d putting the public in a kind of collective trance that may be exacerbated by relying on A.I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The book\u2019s publication came as schools, businesses, governments and internet users all over the world are wrestling with how to use \u2014 and not use \u2014 A.I. tools, which tech giants and startups have made widely available. (The New York Times has sued OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, and its partner, Microsoft, claiming copyright infringement of news content. The two companies have denied the suit\u2019s claims.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yet the book turned out to also be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/an-acclaimed-book-about-digital-manipulation-was-actually-written-by-ai\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a demonstration of its thesis<\/a>, playing out on unwitting readers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The book, Mr. Colamedici said, was meant to show the dangers of \u201ccognitive apathy\u201d that could develop if thinking were delegated to machines and if people don\u2019t cultivate their discernment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI tried to create a performance, an experience that is not just the book,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Colamedici teaches what he calls \u201cthe art of prompting,\u201d or how to ask A.I. smart questions and give it actionable instructions, at the European Institute of Design in Rome. He said that he often sees two extreme, if opposite, responses to tools like ChatGPT, with many students wanting to rely on them exclusively and many teachers thinking that A.I. is inherently wrong. He instead tries to teach users how to discern fact from fabrication and how to engage with the tools productively.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The book is an extension of this effort, Mr. Colamedici argued. The A.I. tools he used helped him to refine the ideas, while clues (real and invented) about the fake author (online and in the book), intentionally suggested potential problems to prompt readers to ask questions, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The first chapter discusses fake authorship, for example, and the book contains obscure references to Italian culture unlikely to come from a young philosopher from Hong Kong, which eventually helped to lead one reviewer to the true author operating as a translator.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sabina Minardi, an editor at the Italian outlet L\u2019Espresso, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/lespresso.it\/c\/inchieste\/2025\/4\/7\/ipnocrazia-best-seller-libro-chi-e-xun\/53621\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">picked up on the clues<\/a>, exposing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/lespresso.it\/c\/-\/2025\/4\/3\/ipnocrazia-intelligenza-artificiale-scrittura-filosofia-lespresso\/53598\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jianwei Xun as a fake early this month.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Colamedici then <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jianweixun.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">updated the fake author\u2019s bio page<\/a> and spoke to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/legrandcontinent.eu\/fr\/2025\/04\/04\/qui-est-vraiment-jianwei-xun-une-conversation-avec-jianwei-xun\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">publications<\/a>, including some <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/technology\/2025-04-07\/jianwei-xun-the-supposed-philosopher-behind-the-hypnocracy-theory-does-not-exist-and-is-a-product-of-artificial-intelligence.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">deceived<\/a> by his work. New editions and excerpts printed this month come with postscripts about the truth. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But some who first embraced the book now reject it and question whether Mr. Colamedici has acted unethically or broken a European Union law about the use of A.I.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The French news outlet Le Figaro wrote about \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/vox\/medias\/l-affaire-jianwei-xun-philosophe-hypnotique-intelligence-artificielle-et-erreur-humaine-20250407\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">L\u2019affaire Jianwei Xun<\/a>,\u201d explaining that the \u201cproblem\u201d with its earlier interview of the Hong Kong philosopher was that \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/vox\/medias\/l-affaire-jianwei-xun-philosophe-hypnotique-intelligence-artificielle-et-erreur-humaine-20250407\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">he doesn\u2019t exist<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Spanish newspaper El Pa\u00eds in Spain retracted a report about the book, replacing it with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/english.elpais.com\/technology\/2025-03-26\/hypnocracy-the-regime-to-numb-critical-thinking.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a note<\/a> that said \u201cthe book failed to acknowledge A.I.\u2019s involvement in the creation of the text, a violation of the new European AI Act.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/artificialintelligenceact.eu\/article\/50\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Article 50<\/a> of that law says that if someone uses an A.I. system to generate text for the purposes of \u201cinforming the public on matters of public interest,\u201d then it must (with limited exceptions) be disclosed that generative A.I. was used, said Noah Feldman, a law professor at Harvard University who advises tech companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat provision on its face seems to cover the creator of the book and perhaps anyone republishing its content,\u201d he said. \u201cThe law does not go into effect until August 2026 but it is common in the E.U. for people and institutions to want to follow laws that seem morally good even when they don\u2019t yet technically apply.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jonathan Zittrain, a law and computer science professor at Harvard, said he was more inclined to call Mr. Colamedici\u2019s book \u201ca piece of performance art, or simply marketing, that involved using a pen name.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Colamedici is disappointed some initial champions have decried the experiment. But he plans to keep using A.I. to demonstrate the very dangers it raises. \u201cThis is the moment,\u201d he said. \u201cWe are risking cognition.
