Happiness tended to be high when they were young, then dipped in midlife, only to rise again as they grew old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/sites.dartmouth.edu\/blanchflower\/files\/2025\/03\/w33490.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recent surveys<\/a> suggest that young adults aren\u2019t as happy as they used to be, and that U-shaped curve is starting to flatten.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This pattern has shown up yet again in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/collections\/global-flourishing-study-wave1\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">new study<\/a>, one of a collection of papers published on Wednesday in the journal Nature Mental Health. They are the first publications based on the inaugural wave of data from the Global Flourishing Study, a collaboration between researchers at Harvard and Baylor University.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The data, collected by Gallup primarily in 2023, was derived from self-reported surveys of more than 200,000 people in over 20 countries. It found that, on average, young adults between the ages of 18 and 29 were struggling \u2014 not only with happiness, but also with their physical and mental health, their perceptions of their own character, finding meaning in life, the quality of their relationships and their financial security. The researchers combined these measures to determine the degree that each participant was \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/hfh.fas.harvard.edu\/measuring-flourishing\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">flourishing<\/a>,\u201d or living in a state where all aspects of life were good.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The study participants had relatively low measures of flourishing on average until age 50, the study found. This was the case in a number of countries, including the United Kingdom, Brazil and Australia. But the difference between the younger and older adults was largest in the United States, the researchers said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is a pretty stark picture,\u201d said Tyler J. VanderWeele, the lead author of the study and director of Harvard\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/hfh.fas.harvard.edu\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Human Flourishing Program<\/a>. The findings raise an important question, he said: \u201cAre we sufficiently investing in the well-being of youth?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Young adulthood has long been considered a carefree time, a period of limitless opportunity and few obligations. But data from the flourishing study and elsewhere suggests that for many people, this notion is more fantasy than reality.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/mcc.gse.harvard.edu\/reports\/on-edge\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2023 report<\/a> from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, for example, found that young adults ages 18-25 in the United States reported double the rates of anxiety and depression as teens. On top of that, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/04\/11\/well\/mind\/perfectionism-social-comparison.html\" title=\"\">perfectionism has skyrocketed<\/a> among college students, who often report feeling pressure to meet unrealistic expectations. Participation in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-01-15\/mlk-day-of-service-is-an-american-exception-on-volunteering\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">community organizations<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/digital.sandiego.edu\/dissertations\/109\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">clubs<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/358364\/religious-americans.aspx\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">religious groups<\/a> has declined, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/06\/well\/loneliness-mental-health-age.html\" title=\"\">loneliness is now becoming as prevalent<\/a> among young adults as it is among older adults.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cStudy after study shows that social connection is critical for happiness, and young people are spending less time with friends than they were a decade ago,\u201d said Laurie Santos, a psychology professor at Yale and host of \u201cThe Happiness Lab\u201d podcast. \u201cPlus, like folks of all ages, young people are facing a world with a whole host of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/13\/well\/mind\/mental-health-young-adults-trends.html\" title=\"\">global issues<\/a> \u2014 from climate to the economy to political polarization.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Emiliana R. Simon-Thomas, the science director of the Greater Good Science Center at the University of California, Berkeley, put it this way: \u201cOur welfare is dependent on the welfare of every other human.<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>We don\u2019t just get to be happy and put a fence around ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In her view, the flourishing data reflects the \u201clong-term consequences of being hyperfocused on status and power,\u201d especially in the U.S., rather than our place within a larger community.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Given that the surveys were administered at different times, in different languages and in different economic, political and cultural environments, it is challenging to directly compare the different countries, Dr. VanderWeele said. While the geographic scope of the study was vast, the current analysis does not include mainland China, where data collection was delayed. In addition, low-income countries were not represented.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not every country saw flourishing increase with age. There were some countries, such as Poland and Tanzania, where flourishing actually decreased as people grew older. While others, including Japan and Kenya, showed the more traditional U-shaped pattern: Flourishing was highest during youth and old age.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But in most of the Western countries \u2014 and many others \u2014 young adults don\u2019t appear to be flourishing. The Global Flourishing Study will continue to collect data annually through 2027 and attempt to uncover the reasons, Dr. VanderWeele said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe know that the young are in trouble<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">,\u201d <\/em>said David G. Blanchflower, a professor of economics at Dartmouth College who was not involved in the flourishing study but whose <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w33490\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">own research<\/a> has uncovered <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nber.org\/reporter\/2025number1\/global-decline-mental-health-young\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the same patterns<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Blanchflower is helping to organize a conference at Dartmouth in partnership with the United Nations so that experts can share research and ideas for solutions to the downward trend.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There are several theories as to why young people are in trouble, he said, but<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>he suspects that the problem is largely tied to what they <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">aren\u2019t<\/em> doing because they\u2019re busy looking at screens.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s not that they\u2019re bowling alone,\u201d he added, referring to Robert D.
