Their bunk beds, cleats and clothes burned with their houses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The New York Times interviewed 10 children and their parents about what it was like to flee the fires in Los Angeles. They talked about what they are worried about, and what is helping them feel better.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy and Ruby Van Kline <\/strong>are twin sisters who just turned 6 this week. They are in kindergarten at Aveson School of Leaders, a charter school in Altadena, Calif. Their house and school both burned down, so the family moved in with their grandparents.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Jet Crawford<\/strong>, 6, was also in kindergarten at Aveson. He is living in a new house with his mom and his sister, Ilana, 3, after their house in Altadena burned. Their new town is about 20 minutes away from home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kurtis Odom,<\/strong> 9, is in fourth grade at McKinley School of the Arts in Pasadena, Calif. His sister, <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kayla<\/strong> <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Odom<\/strong>,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>is 12 and in middle school. They are living in a vacation rental after their house burned down, and doing school online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Phoebe Hanelin<\/strong>, 10, is also in fourth grade. Her school, Marquez Charter Elementary, burned down in the Palisades fire. Her home, which was just across the street, is gone. Phoebe\u2019s older sister, <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Abigail Hanelin<\/strong>, is a sophomore at Palisades Charter High School. Part of her school burned, and now all their classes are online.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Lily Yadegar<\/strong>,<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> Alessandra Santini<\/strong> and <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Yasmine Santini<\/strong> are friends who also go to Pali High. Lily is 14. Alessandra and Yasmine, both 17, are twins. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their homes survived, but they spent more than a week evacuated, staying in hotels and rented houses. The three girls wanted to do something for their friends and neighbors, so they started a GoFundMe to help rebuild their school and a donation drive to help their classmates.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-c82363\">What was it like leaving home?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy <\/strong>said it was \u201cvery, very scary\u201d when the fire came. The power went out. Then the cats started meowing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cMy dad said that our house wouldn\u2019t burn on fire,\u201d Ivy said. \u201cBut I just knew right before our house would go on fire, because it looked like the fire was, like, right next to our backyard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kurtis <\/strong>left his house in Altadena in the middle of the night with his mom, older brother and older sister. He could see the fire getting bigger and bigger. Later, they learned that their house was gone.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI went back to sleep. I woke up. My whole life broke,\u201d Kurtis said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI thought we were going to be OK.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> Yasmine <\/strong>and<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> Alessandra<\/strong> are twins, the teens responded differently the night of the Palisades fire. Alessandra cried. She packed baby photos and her perfume collection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She also got the clothes. \u201cWe share our clothes majority of the time, even though she doesn\u2019t ask me, and sometimes I don\u2019t ask her,\u201d Alessandra said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yasmine brought stuff she thought everyone else would forget about, like medicine and food. \u201cAnd then I brought my baby blanket and my baby stuffed elephant that I\u2019ve always had,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-13535334\">What are your days like right now?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy, Ruby<\/strong> and their parents are staying with their grandparents in West Los Angeles. They like that the house is big and has stairs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">\u201c<\/strong>You can go down them and up them, and I could even do splits down them,\u201d Ruby said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kurtis and Kayla <\/strong>are doing school online. Their mom decided to keep them home while she figures out where they are going to live. When Kurtis isn\u2019t doing school work, he plays cards with his family and talks to his friends on his tablet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Jet<\/strong> is staying in a new house with donated furniture. His school remains closed, and his mom is worried. He has autism and had been doing well with the help of his teachers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Phoebe <\/strong>and her sisters have moved twice since their house burned down. And they know they\u2019re going to have to move again. <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Abigail<\/strong> is worried about where they\u2019ll go next.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7f5a8fe9\">How are you feeling?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kurtis <\/strong>worries about everything his family lost.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cEverything is burned down,\u201d he said. He wonders how his mom can afford to replace his soccer cleats and other sports equipment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His sister, <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kayla<\/strong>, says she is shy and worries that she might have to go to a new school. \u201cIt\u2019s just going to be awkward for me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy and Ruby<\/strong> were excited about their 6th birthday party at Chuck E. Cheese this weekend, where they hoped to see friends from their old school. And Ruby is looking ahead to a milestone at her new school: \u201cGoing outside in the big kid area when I\u2019m a big kid and going on the monkey bars.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Jet\u2019s <\/strong>mom says he has been really upset. When she asked him about the fire, he buried his head in the cushions of their new couch.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s broken,\u201d he said. \u201cMommy\u2019s house.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Lily <\/strong>misses driving to school with Alessandra and Yasmine, and stopping at Starbucks along the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur whole lives, we\u2019ve been looking forward to going to high school together,\u201d Lily said. \u201cIt\u2019s just sad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Remote learning reminds <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Abigail<\/strong> of the pandemic, when she was in middle school. This time, it feels worse. Back then, middle schoolers all across the country were in the same boat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was fine in Covid because it was everybody. But now it\u2019s just one school,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6264ca76\">What was special about your home and your school?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Kurtis<\/strong> will miss the house where he got to know his grandma. His grandparents bought it about 50 years ago after moving to California from Haiti.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Phoebe <\/strong>used to walk to school by herself sometimes. Now she can\u2019t. She likes her new school, but it\u2019s not the same. \u201cTheir yard is so small, our yard was giant, so big,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Pali High, <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Lily<\/strong> says everyone knew each other. \u201cI\u2019ve only been there for a semester, and it already feels like a second home to me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy and Ruby\u2019s<\/strong> school had a \u201cginormous playground,\u201d a garden, chickens named Sunshine and Marshmallow and a rabbit named Mr. Fluff.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t know if they brought the chickens or the bunny,\u201d Ivy said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ivy and Ruby\u2019s house was 99 years old. Their dad told them that it had magic from all the people who had lived there and could even grant their wishes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut it died, so we have to celebrate it,\u201d Ruby said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-113c3bd7\">Did you bring anything with you?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Phoebe <\/strong>and <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Abigail<\/strong> didn\u2019t have time to grab much. Abigail, who loves to read, took only two books and has already finished them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But they were able to get all their pets: a dog, two cats, a beta fish, a dwarf hamster and Turbo the tortoise.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI only brought two stuffies,\u201d <strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ivy <\/strong>said. \u201cAnd we brought our toothpaste and toothbrushes and we got our blankets, and we got some of our pillows, and that\u2019s all I brought.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Ruby<\/strong> brought Barbie dolls.
