For nearly five months a year, when temperatures are often below freezing in Calgary, Mr. James and his wife spend languid days by the pool, hike sweeping canyons and enjoy live music beneath the stars at the local saloon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But in recent months \u2014 as President Trump has announced a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/03\/business\/economy\/trump-tariffs-china-mexico-canada.html\" title=\"\">25 percent tariff<\/a> on certain Canadian goods and threatened <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/07\/world\/canada\/trump-trudeau-canada-51st-state.html\" title=\"\">the nation\u2019s sovereignty<\/a> \u2014 they and other Canadians are reconsidering their future in Palm Springs. The trend is part of a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/26\/travel\/foreign-travel-to-united-states-trump.html\" title=\"\">broader slump<\/a> in tourism as international travelers say they feel unwelcome in the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Palm Springs, some are selling or abandoning plans to buy vacation homes. Others are canceling trips or cutting their winter visits short.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m listening very carefully to Trump talking about how he\u2019s going to take control for a third term, which means you\u2019re going to have a dictatorship,\u201d Mr. James said. In that case, he added, \u201cI have no interest to live here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday, in response to a question about the decline in international tourism to the United States, President Trump said, \u201cIt\u2019s not a big deal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In downtown Palm Springs, where red banners declaring the city\u2019s love for Canadians hang from lampposts outside shops selling broad-brimmed hats, date shakes and crystals, some business owners said that their sales had slowed and that they worried about what was to come.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt would affect my bottom line,\u201d said Sheila Christenson, who owns the clothing store Lush Couture. She added that she welcomed her Canadian customers and told them, \u201cWe\u2019re sorry about what\u2019s going on; that it\u2019s not what we choose.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One postal shop said that during the peak snowbird season, about 20 percent of its business comes from Canadians, and that this year, about a month earlier than usual, some customers had already begun sending home extra clothing, mementos and golf clubs. Another man who runs private airport-ride, pet-sitting and house-checking services said that some of his Canadian clients had told him they may not return. Dennis Costa, the owner of an airline-themed bar, said that his business relied on tourists, many of whom are Canadian. \u201cI\u2019m a little scared, really,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last month, the number of Canadians entering California dropped by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/industry.visitcalifornia.com\/research\/reports\/international-arrivals?selections=Total%20International&amp;filter=&amp;filterType=International&amp;year=2024#\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more than 15 percent<\/a> compared with 2024, according to the Commerce Department. Two Canadian airlines recently <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcpalmsprings.com\/therogginreport\/2025\/04\/04\/canadian-airlines-cut-palm-springs-routes-early-amid-global-tensions-raising-concerns-for-local-economy\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">slashed flights<\/a> to Palm Springs, citing the drop in demand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their absence could have serious economic consequences: According to the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ustravel.org\/press\/potential-results-decline-canadian-travel-united-states\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Travel Association<\/a>, a 10 percent drop in Canadian visitors could cost the country more than $2 billion and 14,000 jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Palm Springs, a city of about 45,000 people, the shift would feel pronounced.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI get it,\u201d Mayor Ron deHarte of Palm Springs said in an interview. He added, \u201cWhy would anybody want to come right now?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The City of Palm Springs, a liberal outpost and a haven for the L.G.B.T.Q. community, has made efforts to embrace Canadian visitors. Last month, Mayor deHarte posted <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/watch\/?v=631921919758169\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a video<\/a> to social media addressed to Canadians. \u201cPlease know you are welcome and appreciated here,\u201d he says, \u201cdespite what the government does.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gov. Gavin Newsom of California has also started a campaign to lure back Canadians. \u201cIt\u2019s the ultimate playground, 2,000 miles from Washington and a world away in mind-set,\u201d he said in a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/shorts\/6b_p6TMduT8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">video posted on social media<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, many have vowed not to come to the United States.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m not mad at California, but I do feel that right now it\u2019s not a good time for Canadians to be in the U.S.A.,\u201d said Patti Bacchus, a Canadian who has been to Palm Springs and the surrounding region dozens of times, including last month. She has since decided not to return. \u201cWe do have a financial impact,\u201d she said, adding, \u201cthat is a way we can exert some resistance to what is happening.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some who do visit feel conflicted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Karen Barclay, 53, had come from Vancouver to attend the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival nearby. She said she and her friends had felt guilty and \u201cwere 50-50 on it.\u201d But because they so rarely see each other, she said, they ultimately decided to go.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And to Rebecca Wu, 27, who was returning to Toronto from the same festival, the welcoming banners felt a little glib. \u201cIt was kind of like them trying to say, \u2018We\u2019re very different than everyone else,\u2019\u201d Ms. Wu said. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be so outwardly apologetic.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many choose Palm Springs over other snowbird destinations, such as Florida, for its left-leaning politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dustin Pilcher, who works at a boutique resort, said that a friend from Calgary nearly backed out of visiting him but changed his mind: \u201cWe\u2019re gay, and he\u2019s like, \u2018Well, I\u2019ll come support my gay friends; the gay businesses, and the gay people,\u2019\u201d Mr. Pilcher said while standing beneath the city\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/02\/arts\/design\/marilyn-monroe-statue-palm-springs.html\" title=\"\">26-foot statue<\/a> of Marilyn Monroe.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The absence is already having ripple effects on the Palm Springs region, where, according to one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/assets.simpleviewinc.com\/sv-greaterpalmsprings\/image\/upload\/v1\/cms_resources\/clients\/palmsprings\/GPS_Canadian_Economic_Report_2017_FLIP_8036d709-751b-46d2-baa2-11441cbd53db.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">analysis<\/a>, Canadian visitors in 2017 generated more than $300 million in revenue and more than 2,000 jobs. In the city and surrounding Coachella Valley, they own about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cvep.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Non_Primary_Residences_by_Location_of_Owner_NOV_2021_FINAL.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">7 percent<\/a> of homes. Sheri Dettman, a real estate agent, said six of her clients selling their properties were Canadian, and all had cited the political climate in the United States as a reason. About a dozen other Canadian buyers, she added, had gotten cold feet in recent months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One of the sellers said that while he and his wife had planned to eventually sell their home in La Quinta, about 20 miles southeast of Palm Springs, the tariffs and other attacks on Canadians accelerated their decision. \u201cIt really drove it home that we needed to support our own economy, not support the economy of United States,\u201d said the seller, Malcolm, who asked to be identified only by first name because he feared retribution at the border.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though he identifies as a conservative, he said that he planned to vote liberal for the first time in the upcoming <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/17\/world\/canada\/canada-federal-election.html\" title=\"\">federal election<\/a> in Canada on Monday. He added, \u201cThe leader of the conservatives \u2014 there\u2019s too many parallels to the leader in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though Mr. James, the snowbird, has not in the past been overtly patriotic, he decided to buy a Canadian flag and stick it to an eave over his front door, where it billows in the hot wind above an ocotillo. His wife has also begun wearing a baseball cap commemorating the Canadian Centennial on her hikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cVirtually no one goes by without comment,\u201d Mr. James said as he sat barefoot on his patio.
