He leaned forward to a microphone as U.S. District Judge Margaret Garnett asked him if understood the indictment and the charges against him.<\/p>\n<p>Mangione said, &#8220;yes.&#8221; When asked how he wished to plead, he said, &#8220;not guilty&#8221; and sat down.<\/p>\n<p>The pleas were not unexpected, since Mangione also pleaded not guilty to state charges he&#8217;s facing in New York and Pennsylvania.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The judge overseeing the case said she hopes to set a trial date during the next federal court conference on Dec. 5.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Pam Bondi, DOJ seeking death penalty against Mangione<\/h2>\n<p>Mangione&#8217;s arraignment came a day after the U.S. Department of Justice <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-death-penalty-notice-of-intent\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">formally told the court it intends to seek the death penalty<\/a><\/span> in the case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Federal prosecutors say Mangione poses a future danger, alleging in the latest court filing that he intended to &#8220;target an entire industry and rally opposition to that industry by engaging in lethal violence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>They also say he took steps to dodge law enforcement, flee New York City after the murder and cross state lines while armed with a privately manufactured gun and silencer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-doj-seeks-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">previously said prosecutors would seek the death penalty<\/a><\/span>, marking the first time since President Trump vowed to resume federal executions when he took office in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mangione&#8217;s attorneys have filed motions <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/luigi-mangione-attorneys-motion-stop-death-penalty-political-stunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">asking for the death penalty option to be removed<\/a><\/span>, saying the government &#8220;intends to kill Mr. Mangione as a political stunt.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>Civil and criminal attorney Donte Mills explained the challenges in a death penalty case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have an additional burden, you have to prove intent. Intent that he intended to rile up the community or make people act as he did, make people commit murders against people in the healthcare industry. You have to prove that he intended this to be more than the killing of one person, and it&#8217;s really hard to prove what was in someone&#8217;s mind,&#8221; Mills said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson killed in NYC<\/h2>\n<p>The 26-year-old is accused of ambushing Thompson, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/brian-thompson-unitedhealthcare-ceo-manhattan-shooting\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a husband and father of two<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/midtown-manhattan-shooting-hilton-hotel\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">outside a midtown hotel on Dec. 4, 2024<\/a><\/span>.
