Kennedy, Jr. announced Tuesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The goal is to replace them with natural alternatives in the U.S. food supply. The FDA will be accelerating the review and approval of some new natural color additives, FDA Commissioner Marty Makary told reporters at an event to announce the plan, which stopped short of an outright ban.<\/p>\n<p>On &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221; Wednesday, CBS News chief medical correspondent Dr. Jon LaPook said the move was significant.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There have been some <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/food-dye-ban-red-health\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">safety issues<\/a><\/span> that have been raised, and you have to remember, there&#8217;s no known nutritional value to these additives, these food dyes,&#8221; he said. &#8220;So you want to be safe not sorry.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The food dye industry has denied any safety concerns with artificial dyes. The International Association of Color Manufacturers said in a statement after the announcement that artificial dyes are &#8220;essential for consistency, visual appeal, and consumer trust in food products.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a look at the six dyes being targeted.<\/p>\n<h2>Red No. 40<\/h2>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-red-dye-40-effects\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">FD&amp;C Red No. 40<\/a><\/span>, or Red 40 for short, is also known as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iacmcolor.org\/color-profile\/allura-red-ac-fdc-red-no-40\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Allura Red AC<\/a>\u00a0in the food industry and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/food\/food-feed-portal\/screen\/food-additives\/search\/details\/POL-FAD-IMPORT-2995\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">E 129<\/a>\u00a0in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>There are thousands of foods with Red 40, according to databases published by the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-search?type=Branded\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">U.S. Department of Agriculture<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewg.org\/foodscores\/ingredients\/19155-RED40\/search\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Environmental Working Group<\/a>. It can also be found in medications and cosmetics.<\/p>\n<p>According to an\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC4975380\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">FDA study<\/a>\u00a0published in 2016, children are exposed to Red 40 primarily from drinks (like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1457634\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Gatorade Fruit Punch<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1595632\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Fanta Soda<\/a>), cereal (like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/751338\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Kellogg&#8217;s Froot Loops<\/a>\u00a0and General Mills&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2717126\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lucky Charms<\/a>) and frozen desserts (like Turkey Hill&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2561198\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Black Raspberry Premium Ice Cream<\/a>, Breyers&#8217;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2532794\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">M&amp;M&#8217;s Minis Caramel Fudge Light Ice Cream<\/a>, Blue Bell&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2679835\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Birthday Cake Vanilla Flavored Ice Cream Cups<\/a>\u00a0and Blue Bunny&#8217;s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2535066\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Strawberry Flavored Soft Frozen Dairy Dessert<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Other beverages that contain Red 40 include several\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2481114\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">strawberry milk<\/a>\u00a0brands and various generic manufacturers of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2524204\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pink lemonade mixes<\/a>. The dye can also be found in some candies.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Yellow No. 5<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to Red 40, Yellow 5 and 6 are the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/food-dyes-red-40-yellow-5-health-concerns\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">most popular artificial dyes<\/a><\/span> used,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/cris.msu.edu\/news\/101-series\/101-series-food-dye\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the Michigan State University Center for Research on Ingredient Safety<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Yellow 5 is found in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.luckycharms.com\/products\/original-lucky-charms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Lucky Charms<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2594218\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">M&amp;Ms<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skittles.com\/products\/skittles-original-fruity-candy-single-pack-217-oz-skittles-chewy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Skittles<\/a> and some\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/2673877\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">cake mixes<\/a>. It is also found in drinks like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pepsicoproductfacts.com\/Home\/Product?formula=44316*01*01-10&amp;form=RTD&amp;size=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Mountain Dew<\/a>, chips like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/fdc.nal.usda.gov\/food-details\/1629973\/nutrients\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Doritos<\/a> and condiments like Vlasic&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vlasic.com\/relish\/sweet-relish\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">sweet relish<\/a> and Kraft&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kraftheinz.com\/kraft-sauces\/products\/00021000642823-creamy-french-salad-dressing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">creamy French salad dressing<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>Yellow No. 6<\/h2>\n<p>Yellow 6 can be found in many of the same products that contain Yellow 5.
