The 806-foot-long aircraft carrier, nicknamed the &#8220;Fighting Lady,&#8221; played a huge role in the United States&#8217; Pacific campaign during World War II before it was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine during the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/video-wwii-aircraft-carriers-uss-yorktown-battle-of-midway-us-survivors-reaction\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Battle of Midway<\/a><\/span> in June 1942. The mission was the first to focus on the ship&#8217;s hanger deck.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The most surprising find was the first-ever discovery of underwater aircraft that had flown on the <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/wwii-shipwrecks-battle-of-midway-japanese-imperial-navy-akagi-kaga-uss-yorktown\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Midway battlefield<\/a><\/span>, NOAA said. Previous missions have investigated ships that took part in the battle, but the dive on April 20 found aircraft that had engaged in the air and sea battle.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/04\/23\/4387b1d9-a346-47b1-9b01-19b0b365adf5\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/dc56ef93d988174df38b2b86e84a1b7c\/dive07-elevator.jpg?v=edaea84d9f9990d3a4d8ddf0e6fb4e98#\" alt=\"dive07-elevator.jpg \" height=\"698\" width=\"1240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">At least three planes were located within the aft Elevator #3 of USS Yorktown during the dive on April 20, including an overturned SBD Dauntless that was still armed with a bomb mounted to the underside of the aircraft&#8217;s fuselage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                NOAA Ocean Exploration<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>At least three Douglas SBD Dauntless bombers were found on the hanger deck. One plane was still fully armed, with a bomb secured in its release cradle. This plane was likely part of a reserve force, NOAA said. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The other two planes were battle-damaged. They are believed to be part of the USS Enterprise&#8217;s bombing squadron, which landed aboard the USS Yorktown after a successful attack on a Japanese carrier ship. Records show that the badly damaged airplanes were moved to the hangar deck and set ablaze when three enemy bombs struck the USS Yorktown, NOAA said. Research to confirm the planes is ongoing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/04\/23\/3c642cef-a35e-4972-a806-b1111fb7b41c\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/159a66787a5ebf6e845d01b4ab6d3a18\/dive06-wing.jpg?v=edaea84d9f9990d3a4d8ddf0e6fb4e98#\" alt=\"dive06-wing.jpg \" height=\"698\" width=\"1240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">During the dive on April 19, the Papah\u0101naumoku\u0101kea ROV and Mapping expedition team was able to confirm an aircraft wing imaged during a 2023 expedition on Exploration Vessel Nautilus and located another set of potentially folded wings also in the hangar deck.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                NOAA Ocean Exploration<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The remote-operated camera also identified multiple plane wings in the hangar deck. These were likely spare parts, NOAA said. It serves as a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/battle-of-midway-akagi-ship-discovered-historic-world-war-ii-battle\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">resting place for hundreds of servicemen<\/a><\/span> who were aboard the ship when it sank. It has been the site of multiple remotely operated vehicle dives since it was discovered and documented in 1998.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>More than 3,400 people were killed in the Battle of Midway. Three hundred and sixty-two U.S. troops died, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalww2museum.org\/war\/articles\/battle-midway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">National WWII Museum<\/a>, and the vast majority of the casualties were Japanese service members.
