It also claims that Walgreens pressured its workers to fill the prescriptions quickly without regard for proper legal protocols.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These practices allowed millions of opioid pills and other controlled substances to flow illegally out of Walgreens stores,&#8221; said Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Brian M. Boynton, head of the DOJ&#8217;s Civil Division in a January\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-files-nationwide-lawsuit-alleging-walgreens-knowingly-filled-millions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Included in those prescriptions, the government says, were &#8220;excessive quantities of opioids&#8221; and prescriptions for &#8220;trinity&#8221; which is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ojp.gov\/ncjrs\/virtual-library\/abstracts\/overlapping-prescriptions-opioids-benzodiazepines-and-carisoprodol\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">triple-drug combination<\/a> of opioids, benzodiazepines and muscle relaxants.<\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department filed its original <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-files-nationwide-lawsuit-alleging-walgreens-knowingly-filled-millions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> against the national drugstore chain on Jan. 16, claiming that Walgreens dispensed unlawful prescriptions and then sought reimbursement for the drugs from Medicare and other federal health care programs. In doing so, the agency said Walgreens violated the Controlled Substances Act (CSA)\u2014 which regulates the distribution of regulated substances \u2014 and the False Claims Act (FCA).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Walgreens has over 8,000 pharmacies across the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We strongly disagree with the government&#8217;s legal theory and admit no liability,&#8221; a spokesperson for Walgreens told CBS MoneyWatch in an email Monday. &#8220;Our pharmacists are dedicated health care professionals who care deeply about patient safety and continue to play a critical role in providing education and resources to help combat opioid misuse and abuse across our country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/video\/survery-for-opioid-free-relief-from-back-pain-is-one-step-closer-to-fda-approval\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Survery for opioid-free relief from back pain is one step closer to FDA approval<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">02:31<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>If Walgreens had been found liable, it could have been fined up to $80,850 for each prescription filled in violation of the CSA, according to January statement from the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-files-nationwide-lawsuit-alleging-walgreens-knowingly-filled-millions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"> Department of Justice<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the Walgreens settlement was reached, the U.S. government dismissed its complaint against the company and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/walgreens-agrees-pay-350m-illegally-filling-unlawful-opioid-prescriptions-and-submitting\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0that the drugstore chain would also drop a declaratory judgment action it filed at a district court in Texas.<\/p>\n<p>More than 700,000 people in the United States have died of opioid overdoses since 1999, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/overdose-prevention\/about\/understanding-the-opioid-overdose-epidemic.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according<\/a>\u00a0to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
