The company\u2019s full-year revenue for 2024 rose to $400.3 billion. For UnitedHealthcare, the insurance division, full-year revenue increased to $298.2 billion, up 6 percent from 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The results were the company\u2019s first since Brian Thompson, the chief executive of UnitedHealthcare, was gunned down in front of a Midtown Manhattan hotel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The murder unleashed public outrage aimed at big health insurers, over lack of access to health care and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/05\/nyregion\/delay-deny-defend-united-health-care-insurance-claims.html\" title=\"\">denials of coverage and insurance claims.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some shareholders have urged UnitedHealth to issue a report on its practices that \u201climit or delay access to health care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Andrew Witty, UnitedHealth Group\u2019s chief executive, said on a call with analysts on Thursday that frustrations about claims, including delays in receiving care and coverage, were \u201ckey areas for us to work hard at to improve.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A successor to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/nyregion\/unitedhealthcare-brian-thompson-funeral.html\" title=\"\">Mr. Thompson<\/a> has not been named yet. Mr. Witty did not share details about filling the post, nor did he directly address the recent shareholder campaign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But he and other executives discussed the loss of Mr. Thompson at the top of the call.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe devoted his time to helping make the health system work better for all of the people we\u2019re privileged to serve,\u201d Mr. Witty said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">UnitedHealth\u2019s results, which disappointed Wall Street, in many ways reflected broader trends and lingering issues for the industry. For several quarters, U.S. health insurers have taken hits to their earnings from high medical expenses and a tightening of government payment policies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">John Rex, the company\u2019s chief financial officer, pointed to cutbacks in government rates in the payment system for Medicare Advantage program, the private insurance arm of the federal coverage for people 65 and over. UnitedHealth has substantial business in these Medicare private plans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Medicare Advantage performance has declined throughout the industry recently, partly because of regulatory changes meant to prevent overcharging and following increased health spending among some older populations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Witty also said there were costs associated with changes in Medicaid, the federal-state insurance program for the poor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company\u2019s medical cost ratio, a measure of the cost of providing care, came in higher than expected in the most recent quarter, which could add fuel to investors\u2019 concerns that increased costs for delivery of care might linger, said John Boylan, an analyst at Edward Jones, an investment firm.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">UnitedHealth, however, kept its full-year guidance for 2025 intact, unaltered by recent pressure. Analysts at Morgan Stanley said in a research note that the company had set \u201creasonably prudent targets\u201d for this year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOverall, our view is that United is well positioned to navigate the evolving health care landscape due to its diversified business model,\u201d Mr. Boylan said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">UnitedHealth\u2019s stock fell 6 percent on Thursday as investors digested the weaker-than-expected results. UnitedHealth\u2019s results, often seen as a bellwether for performance across the industry, pushed down shares of its rivals, including CVS Health, which is the parent of the insurer Aetna.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">UnitedHealth Group also owns Optum Rx, one of the country\u2019s largest pharmacy benefit managers, which employers and government programs hire to oversee their prescription-drug benefits.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Optum Rx has faced scrutiny from regulators over concerns that it has raised drug prices, prioritizing its own interests above those of patients, employers and taxpayers. Just this week, the Federal Trade Commission released a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ftc.gov\/reports\/specialty-generic-drugs-growing-profit-center-vertically-integrated-pharmacy-benefit-managers\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">report<\/a> detailing how P.B.M.s could be inflating drug costs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The agency criticized Optum Rx and two other major benefit managers \u2014 CVS Health\u2019s Caremark and Cigna\u2019s Express Scripts \u2014 for raising prices on generic drugs for cancer, heart disease and other illnesses as high as 1,000 percent of national average costs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Witty, the UnitedHealth Group chief executive, defended Optum\u2019s practices, stressing that 98 percent of the rebates were passed to customers. By 2028, he said, all rebates would be passed on. Drug prices in the United States, Mr. Witty argued, are \u201cde novo set too high relative to any other price in the world,\u201d and shifted the blame to drug companies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe P.B.M. acts on behalf of the ultimate payer \u2014 the employer, the union, the state,\u201d Mr. Witty told analysts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Witty did not address investigations by the Justice Department or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/12\/health\/united-health-home-care-antitrust.html\" title=\"\">lawsuits<\/a> seeking to block its proposed acquisition of Amedsys, a large home care and hospice company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Beyond rising medical costs and increasing use of health care services, UnitedHealth executives pointed to the widespread ransomware attack in 2024 that weighed on the company\u2019s full-year profits. The cyberattack <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/05\/health\/cyberattack-healthcare-cash.html\" title=\"\">forced the shutdown<\/a> of the company\u2019s sprawling billing and payment system, Change Healthcare. The company has estimated that the data breach of health and privacy information affected more than 100 million people, and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.changehealthcare.com\/hipaa-substitute-notice.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said this week that a review<\/a> of personal information involved in the incident was \u201csubstantially complete.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Luigi Mangione, 26, has been charged with multiple state and federal counts of murder as well as weapons and stalking offenses. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/23\/nyregion\/luigi-mangione-arraignment.html\" title=\"\">He has pleaded not guilty.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unitedhealthgroup.com\/newsroom\/2024\/2024-12-13-uhg-statement-claims-misinformation.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener
