That there had been a homicide, but we don&#8217;t have a body.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>But who was dead? Was it Aaron Friar, Ellie or both?<\/p>\n<p>Natalie Morales investigates the pair&#8217;s mysterious disappearance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/sneak-peek-first-love-then-murder\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">&#8220;First Love, Then Murder&#8221;<\/a> an all-new &#8220;48 Hours&#8221; airing Saturday, April 19 at 10\/9c on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.<\/p>\n<p>The search was on. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We probably had 70, 75 [officers] out on the streets of Medford,&#8221; says Ford.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/how-a-forbidden-teen-relationship-may-have-led-to-a-fathers-murder\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">How a forbidden teen relationship may have led to a father&#8217;s murder<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">04:17<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Then, just four hours after she had been reported missing, Ellie was located by police. She was alive, unharmed, and had been walking down a busy street with two young men: her boyfriend, Gavin MacFarlane, 19, and Gavin&#8217;s friend, Russell Jones, 22.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So, now we know Ellie is safe,&#8221; said Ford. <\/p>\n<p>But what about her father, Aaron Friar? <\/p>\n<p>Based on the bloody crime scene at the house, time was quickly running out to find him. But could Ellie have been involved? Ford kept an open mind.<\/p>\n<p>Ellie and the two men were separated and brought to the Medford Police station for questioning. Ellie seemed perplexed when she was told by police that her father was missing. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I haven&#8217;t been home and now I&#8217;m really concerned about what&#8217;s been going on,&#8221; Ellie told a detective. <\/p>\n<p>She even offered a suggestion as to where her dad might be: &#8220;Maybe he was looking for me.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Around that time, Ford began interviewing Russell Jones.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/04\/17\/51e4c6fd-0792-4869-bcf6-54159afd7c51\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/d2550f971d28bb4208c6fa9c4b032f07\/friar-jones-taunt.jpg?v=04a4ba26f526ed8207f014fe1018c4aa#\" alt=\"Russell Jones \" height=\"698\" width=\"1240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Russell Jones, left alone in the interrogation room, began taunting investigators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Medford Police Department<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s a talker \u2026 very, very talkative,&#8221; said Ford. &#8220;So, I kind of knew if I could get in there and get him talking, he would \u2026 have a hard time keeping his mouth shut.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ford&#8217;s theory was correct. <\/p>\n<p>Jones was eager to talk, but he wanted something first: a cigarette. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I talk better when I have a cigarette,&#8221; Jones told Ford during his taped police interview. <\/p>\n<p>Ford took Russell outside of the station for a cigarette break.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Just kind of smokin&#8217; and jokin&#8217; is what we call it,&#8221;\u00a0 Ford explained.<\/p>\n<p>But Ford was serious about the task at hand: finding Aaron Friar.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I look at him and I&#8217;m like, &#8216;You know, Russell, I don&#8217;t want a child to find Aaron, Ellie&#8217;s dad, out there somewhere, come across something like that,'&#8221; Ford recalls saying. &#8220;I said, &#8216;Can you take us to Aaron?&#8217; And he didn&#8217;t beat an eye. He&#8217;s just like, &#8216;Yeah, I&#8217;ll take you to him.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Ford was shocked: &#8220;Holy smokes! That&#8217;s a big moment, you know?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He immediately loaded Jones into his police car.<\/p>\n<p>As the veteran investigator and his suspect began their drive, Jones confessed to Ford.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He ends up saying he wasn&#8217;t responsible for Aaron&#8217;s death, but he helped load the body,&#8221; Ford recalled.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re driving along with him, now he&#8217;s starting to sing like a canary,&#8221; said Morales.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Exactly,&#8221; Ford replied.<\/p>\n<p>But who had killed Aaron Friar and why?<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/assets2.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2025\/04\/17\/5d222978-e07f-4700-8d6d-a95123206d6f\/thumbnail\/1240x698\/3d88f451af4e2f9fb0606ad81b86e35f\/friar-jones-smoking2.jpg?v=04a4ba26f526ed8207f014fe1018c4aa#\" alt=\"Detective Bill Ford, left, with Russell Jones \" height=\"698\" width=\"1240\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Detective Bill Ford, left, with Russell Jones during a cigarette break.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                Medford Police Department<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As their journey continued, Ford says Jones began going off on tangents. But Ford says he didn&#8217;t mind. It was all part of his plan.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Keep talking, keep him happy,&#8221; said Ford. &#8220;He even asked for another cigarette \u2026 and I said, &#8216;You&#8217;ve had two already.
