They forget to drink water and are usually unable to sleep or eat for days. In this phase, known as \u201ctweaking,\u201d users can become hyper-focused on activities such as taking apart bicycles \u2014 which they forget to reassemble \u2014 or spending hours collecting things like pebbles and shiny gum wrappers. They may become agitated and aggressive. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK535356\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Paranoia, hallucinations<\/a> and psychosis can set in.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some people incessantly scratch or pick their skin to root out \u201cmeth bugs,\u201d often leaving scars or open wounds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Long-term side effects include cognitive decline, memory loss, severe depression, heart-valve damage, and gum disease and tooth decay, known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.maine.gov\/dhhs\/mecdc\/population-health\/odh\/documents\/meth-mouth.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cmeth mouth.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2acefa97\">Can meth kill?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unless the meth dose is adulterated with fentanyl \u2014 which is increasingly common \u2014 it is usually not immediately lethal. People die from meth-related causes, including strokes and brain bleeds, as well as accidents while on a meth binge, such as wandering in traffic and being hit by a vehicle. Meth can cause chronic users to overheat and go into convulsions.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-69f22d12\">How does meth get into the country?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Traffickers hide it in numerous ways. Law enforcement officers have seized shipments of meth in bottles of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/local-media-release\/cbp-officers-seize-over-20-million-methamphetamine-roma-port-entry\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">mineral water<\/a> (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-ndga\/pr\/members-massive-methamphetamine-conversion-and-trafficking-ring-sentenced\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cconversion labs\u201d<\/a> in the United States then extract the drug from <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bakersfieldnow.com\/news\/local\/kcso-two-arrested-in-bakersfield-after-meth-lab-bust-nets-85-pounds-of-drugs-kern-county-sheriffs-office-california\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the liquid<\/a>); in a tractor-trailer that listed its cargo as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbp.gov\/newsroom\/local-media-release\/cbp-officers-intercept-over-212-million-methamphetamine-pharr\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ctomatillos<\/a>;\u201d stuffed in rolls of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.afp.gov.au\/news-centre\/media-release\/two-men-sentenced-over-failed-plot-import-600kg-methamphetamine-hidden\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">toilet paper;<\/a> disguised as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/08\/27\/nx-s1-5090995\/watermelon-meth-5-million-san-diego-border-checkpoint\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">watermelons<\/a>; and mailed inside bags of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsaz.com\/2025\/03\/06\/nearly-40-lbs-meth-found-inside-cheetos-bags-authorities-say\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Cheetos<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-78e740ae\">How can people quit meth?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Although there are medications that suppress cravings for opioids, there are no approved medicines to treat meth addiction. Moreover, overdose reversal medications like naloxone do not work on a person overdosing on meth (unless the drug was adulterated with fentanyl).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dhcs.ca.gov\/Pages\/DMC-ODS-Contingency-Management.aspx\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">behavioral treatment<\/a> for meth addiction is called \u201ccontingency management.\u201d It rewards clients with modest gift cards when their urine screens are negative and has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/HOMELESS\/docs\/White-Paper-Contingenc-Management-with-Homeless-Veterans-508.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">long been featured in addiction treatment at Veterans Affairs<\/a> programs.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-27f4e6d4\">Are there other names for meth?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s known as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dea.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-06\/Methamphetamine-2020.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ice,<\/a> Tina, crystal, glass and speed. The nickname <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/archive\/6702372\/southern-california-tales-of-the-crank\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201ccrank<\/a>\u201d was a nod to bikers who smuggled it in the crankcase of their engines.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"css-7ad88g e1mu4ftr0\"\/>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-2888b13b\">How long has meth been around?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It has been around over 100 years, but has changed considerably and become much more potent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1887, a German chemist synthesized the chemical compound ephedrine, found in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nccih.nih.gov\/health\/ephedra\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the ephedra plant.<\/a> By 1893, Japanese scientists were developing methamphetamine. During World War II, German, British and American military distributed meth tablets to keep troops awake and to suppress appetites. In Japan, the tablets were given to kamikaze pilots and also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aic.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2020-05\/rpp081.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sold over the counter<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 1944, the Food and Drug Administration approved a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lookchem.com\/cas-763\/7632-10-2.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">methamphetamine medication,<\/a> Desoxyn, which has been used to treat narcolepsy, obesity and A.D.H.D., but it is infrequently prescribed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/books.google.com\/books\/about\/Methamphetamine.html?id=Ng_XDQAAQBAJ\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">researchers<\/a>, by the late 1960s, the warning <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=fF8HPLmrmMc\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSpeed Kills\u201d<\/a>\u2014 referring to drugs as well as driving \u2014 was being promoted in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the 1990s, meth became known as a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2004\/01\/12\/nyregion\/beast-bathhouse-crystal-meth-use-gay-men-threatens-reignite-epidemic.html\" title=\"\">dance club<\/a> drug. Home \u201ccooks\u201d made batches of it, often using pseudoephedrine, an ingredient in over-the-counter cold medications. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2005, alarmed at the rising use of meth, Congress passed the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/meth\/combat-methamphetamine-epidemic-act.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Combat Methamphetamine Epidemic Act<\/a>, requiring retailers to move cold medicines containing pseudoephedrine behind the counter. Meth production began to drop, while the opioid crisis gathered force. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then, as reported in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2021\/11\/the-new-meth\/620174\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Atlantic<\/a>, chemists discovered a powerful formulation that sidestepped pseudoephedrine.
