That rate is nearly five times as high as the figure in 2000, when the agency first began collecting data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The health agency noted that the increase was most likely being driven by better awareness and screening, not necessarily because autism itself was becoming more common.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That diverged sharply from the rhetoric of the nation\u2019s health secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who on Tuesday said, \u201cThe autism epidemic is running rampant.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy has repeatedly tried to connect rising autism rates with vaccines, despite <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nap.nationalacademies.org\/catalog\/13164\/adverse-effects-of-vaccines-evidence-and-causality\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dozens of studies<\/a> over decades that failed to establish such a link. The health secretary nonetheless <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/07\/health\/vaccines-autism-cdc-rfk-jr.html\" title=\"\">has initiated a federal study that will revisit the possibility<\/a> and has hired <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/health\/rfk-jr-autism-vaccines.html\" title=\"\">a well-known vaccine skeptic to oversee the effort<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/11\/health\/rfk-jr-autism-vaccines.html\" title=\"\">recently announced<\/a> an effort by the Department of Health and Human Services to pinpoint the \u201corigins of the epidemic\u201d by September, an initiative that was greeted with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/11\/health\/rfk-jr-autism-vaccines.html\" title=\"\">skepticism<\/a> by many autism experts. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt seems very unlikely that it is an epidemic, in the way that people define epidemics,\u201d said Catherine Lord, a psychologist and autism researcher at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A significant part of the increase instead can be attributed to the expansion of the diagnosis over the years to capture milder cases, Dr. Lord said, as well as decreased stigma and greater awareness of support services.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, she left open the possibility that other factors are contributing to more children developing autism. \u201cWe can account for a lot of the increase but perhaps not all of it,\u201d Dr. Lord said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cBut whatever it is, it\u2019s not vaccines,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulties with social interactions and communication, sensory issues and repetitive interests and behaviors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the causes remain largely unknown, researchers believe it has a strong <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2012\/04\/05\/health\/research\/scientists-link-rare-gene-mutations-to-heightened-risk-of-autism.html\" title=\"\">genetic component<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s very unlikely that it\u2019s one cause or even a small number of causes,\u201d Dr. Lord said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The new data were collected by the C.D.C.\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/74\/ss\/ss7402a1.htm?s_cid=ss7402a1_e&amp;ACSTrackingID=USCDC_921-DM146435&amp;ACSTrackingLabel=MMWR%20Surveillance%20Summaries%20%E2%80%93%20Vol.%2074%2C%20April%2015%2C%202025&amp;deliveryName=USCDC_921-DM146435#T2_down\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network<\/a>, which used the health and education records of more than 274,000 children at 16 sites across the country to estimate autism rates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The prevalence of the disorder has risen steadily since the year 2000, when the network first began tracking it.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other trends were evident in the new research. While white children and children from wealthier socioeconomic areas long had the highest rates of autism in the United States, that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/03\/23\/health\/autism-children-diagnosis.html\" title=\"\">trend flipped<\/a> in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Starting in 2020, greater percentages of Black and Latino children were found to have autism, and the association with wealthier communities was no longer seen in the data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The C.D.C. reported prevalence rates of 3.7 percent among Black children, 3.3 percent among Hispanic children and 3.8 percent among Asian American children, compared with 2.8 percent among white children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While autism has long been associated with boys, a difference that may be tied to genetics, girls are now <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/10\/science\/autism-rate-girls.html\" title=\"\">diagnosed at higher rates<\/a> as awareness has grown about the subtler ways the disorder can manifest, often emerging more clearly in teenage years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Autism was 3.4 times more prevalent in boys than girls in 2022, down from 3.8 times higher in 2020, the C.D.C. said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The data also showed surprising variability in autism diagnoses by geography, ranging from 5.3 percent of 8-year-olds in California to just under 1 percent in Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The availability of certain medical and educational resources increases the likelihood that these children will be identified.
