Critics say she has courted ideological minorities, including fervent anti-vaccine organizations, advocates for Albertan secessionism and hard-line anti-trans activists, to secure her election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She has been careful to make those groups feel included in her agenda while not fully endorsing their rhetoric.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That ability, along with the political freedom afforded by her lack of interest in national office, has put her at the vanguard of Canada\u2019s changing right.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In recent months, Ms. Smith has defended her pro-Trump overtures as a diplomatic approach that complements the more aggressive stance taken by the federal government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Simply put, she said of her Trump ties, \u201cI\u2019m happy to be good cop.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-67bd84c\">Maple Leaf MAGA<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith\u2019s approach is underpinned by more than admiration for Mr. Trump and his politics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is also driven by her province\u2019s unusual relationship with the United States, and the rest of Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAmericans helped us build our two biggest industries, our cattle industry and our oil and gas industry,\u201d she added, sitting in her office in Calgary.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith has qualified her support for Mr. Trump by saying she does not support his tariffs on Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it\u2019s going to hurt them \u2014 it\u2019s going to hurt us \u2014 but I think we can probably work our way through that,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She\u2019s had to respond to criticism and calibrate her enthusiasm in the context of Mr. Trump\u2019s calling for the annexation of Canada \u2014 \u201cIt\u2019s not going to happen,\u201d she said \u2014 and his ire over Canadian goods, including Alberta\u2019s oil, which almost entirely heads to the United States and is subject to a 10 percent tariff (although a loophole to avoid the levy was subsequently introduced).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But she was generally effusive about Mr. Trump, recalling her January visit to his Mar-a-Lago club in Florida, where she saw him D.J. on an iPad and hold court after a game of golf.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-701c14e5\">Comeback Kids<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And, she added, much like Mr. Trump, she has her own comeback story.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">More than a decade ago, Ms. Smith was leading a small right-wing party in Alberta when she decided to join the larger provincial conservative party, a move that outraged her former colleagues but that she defended as an effort to unify the province\u2019s conservatives.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The high-risk move backfired. Ms. Smith was not selected by the party to be a candidate for her electoral district and left politics for years.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2022, she came roaring back, winning her bid to lead Alberta\u2019s United Conservative Party and then a provincial election to become premier.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To win, she took the opposite approach to the one she had tried a decade ago: Instead of tacking to the center, she led the party\u2019s expansion to the right. She secured the support of libertarian grass-roots organizations, including a prominent citizens\u2019 group that had organized around anti-vaccine mandates, as well as a movement seeking Albertan independence from the rest of Canada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Albertan independence, in fact, would become a pressing question.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4128962d\">Western Promises<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith has sought to use the question of Alberta\u2019s relationship with the rest of Canada to her political advantage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many Albertans \u2014 not just the ones supporting independence \u2014 say that their province\u2019s energy riches are being exploited by a federal government that takes revenues from them to bankroll poorer parts of the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And they rail against Ottawa for introducing climate policies that limit the province\u2019s ability to extract and sell energy products.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Asked explicitly if she supported Alberta\u2019s splitting away, Ms. Smith said, \u201cWe should go back to what the Constitution says,\u201d referring to Canada\u2019s federal system, in which provinces have power to manage several important policy areas. \u201cThe Constitution gives us areas of exclusive jurisdiction that the federal government keeps invading and trying to undermine.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Secessionism advocates see, in Ms. Smith, an ally. Her chief of staff is a co-author of a crucial document, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.freealbertastrategy.com\/the_strategy\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Free Alberta Strategy<\/a>, which lays out the reasoning for independence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another author, Barry Cooper, who teaches political science at the University of Calgary, said she was making the right noises. \u201cI think she can advance our place within the federation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Historically, separatism \u201chas been an abstract concept related to Alberta going it alone,\u201d said Jared Wesley, a professor at the University of Alberta who researches the topic. It remains a minority view, though a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/angusreid.org\/smith-shapiro-sovereignty\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">recent poll from the Angus Reid Institute<\/a> indicated support could grow if the Liberal Party won the upcoming federal election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith has pledged to explore the idea of holding an independence referendum after that election and has threatened a rupture with the federal government to gain concessions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last month, after meeting Prime Minister <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/09\/world\/canada\/mark-carney-liberal-election.html\" title=\"\">Mark Carney<\/a>, the Liberal leader in the elections, she said that she had \u201cprovided a specific list of demands the next prime minister, regardless of who that is, must address within the first six months of their term to avoid an unprecedented national unity crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The demands included several policies to bolster the province\u2019s energy sector.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-172d3fc4\">Blessing and Curse<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith is playing a key role in mobilizing support for the federal Conservative leader, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/06\/world\/canada\/pierre-poilievre-conservative-party-trump.html\" title=\"\">Pierre Poilievre<\/a>, who is vying to become the country\u2019s next prime minister and was also born in Alberta.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Together, Ms. Smith and Mr. Poilievre are defining a brand of Canadian conservatism focused on culture issues, limiting the government\u2019s role in public and private life, and an anti-elite, anti-federal approach to running Canada. If Mr. Poilievre loses the election, that vision could be in jeopardy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Both politicians supported the so-called <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/29\/world\/americas\/canada-trucker-protest.html\" title=\"\">Freedom Convoy<\/a>, a movement with strong appeal in Alberta that began as a protest against Covid vaccine mandates for truck drivers, drew in other groups, turned violent in places and paralyzed the nation\u2019s capital for weeks.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Ms. Smith\u2019s embrace can be a double-edged sword, as Mr. Poilievre is discovering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.breitbart.com\/politics\/2025\/03\/08\/exclusive-canadian-premier-danielle-smith-trudeau-blew-tariff-negotiations-first-mar-a-lago-meeting\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Breitbart interview<\/a> last month, she said that Mr. Poilievre was \u201cin sync\u201d with Mr. Trump and that she had asked the White House to \u201cput things on pause\u201d \u2014 a reference to the hostile climate between the two countries \u2014 until the election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics said her remarks were an invitation to Washington to interfere with Canada\u2019s elections in favor of Mr. Poilievre, whose combative style bears similarities to Mr. Trump&#8217;s. Mr. Poilievre has seen his once-large lead over the Liberals evaporate in the run-up to the vote, partly because many Canadians now consider Mr. Trump a major threat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Ms. Smith was, again, unapologetic, insisting that she was trying to do what was best for Canada, not just for Mr. Poilievre.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-17feedfa\">Right All Along<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With Mr. Trump in the Oval Office, Ms. Smith seems to feel that, finally, her ideological side is winning.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She delights at Mr. Trump\u2019s assault on what she calls \u201cwokeism.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-13\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the policy area where her alignment with Mr. Trump\u2019s movement is most pronounced is probably health. In fact, Ms. Smith says that Alberta has been leading the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe were at the front end on protecting the choice of kids through the trans policy changes that we\u2019ve made,\u201d she added, referring to Alberta\u2019s passing legislation limiting access to gender-affirming medical interventions for minors and other policies targeting transgender children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Smith has opposed any mandatory vaccination, despite measles outbreaks in Canada and in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cParents are pretty discerning,\u2019\u2019 she said. \u201cThey\u2019re able to know which vaccines are best for their kids.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-589a286\">Call In<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Ms. Smith has been at the forefront of the country\u2019s hottest political debates, she still seems most comfortable on Alberta\u2019s radio waves.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-14\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She takes questions from Albertans on a regular call-in program called \u201cYour Province. Your Premier.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She listens attentively and offers a smiling reply, no matter the topic, that unfailingly makes the caller feel as if they are making a really good point, however unreasonable it may be.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She credits her years as a call-in radio host for learning to listen to everyone, a quality that makes her likable, as even some of her harshest critics concede.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI just would rather hear people out; it\u2019s just the nice, polite thing to do,\u201d she said, adding a rare reference to Canada rather than Alberta: \u201cMaybe it\u2019s just a Canadian thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/www.instagram.com\/embed.js\"><\/script><br \/>\n<br \/><script async
