Gavin Newsom\u2019s new podcast. His son had become a fan of Charlie Kirk, the right-wing influencer who mobilized young voters for Donald J. Trump.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, said that 13-year-old Hunter was such an admirer that he argued his father should let him attend the taping with Mr. Kirk. \u201c\u2018What time? What time is Charlie going to be here?\u2019\u201d Mr. Newsom recounted his son saying at bedtime. \u201cAnd I\u2019m like, \u2018Dude, you\u2019re in school tomorrow.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That Mr. Kirk had captivated the son of a leading Democrat and a feminist documentarian, Jennifer Siebel Newsom, was an indication of just how popular conservative podcasters had become with young men.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many expected Mr. Newsom to respond to Mr. Trump\u2019s presidential victory by seizing the mantle as the voice of the resistance. Instead, he has become a different kind of voice entirely \u2014 the one on the podcast.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The governor has been using his new platform to explore what Democrats need to do to win back young men. Along the way, he has tried to charm far-right figures, angering many in his own party and inspiring critiques that he\u2019s attempting to remake his image as a member of the liberal elite with well-coifed hair as he eyes a potential run for president in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The first three guests on Mr. Newsom\u2019s show \u2014 officially titled \u201cThis Is Gavin Newsom\u201d \u2014 were conservative men who have enraged Democrats in the past. Besides Mr. Kirk, who has criticized gay marriage and diversity programs, there was also Steve Bannon, an architect of the MAGA movement, and Michael Savage, a conservative talk show firebrand.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Concepts of masculinity have been a recurring theme with both conservative and liberal guests, as Mr. Newsom has delved into the \u201cbro culture\u201d that helped Mr. Trump defeat former Vice President Kamala Harris.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis issue of young men and what\u2019s happened to our party is deeply on my mind and will be deeply part of my podcast,\u201d Mr. Newsom said in an interview with The New York Times. What he\u2019s trying to explore, he added, are \u201cthe things that we\u2019re uncomfortable exploring.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s a remarkable shift for a politician who campaigned for governor in 2018 with his toddler on his hip and who, the next year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2019\/05\/newsom-budget-governor-dad-california-families-family-leave-diapers-preschool\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> new tax breaks on diapers and menstrual products surrounded by boxes of Huggies and Tampax.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, Mr. Newsom is in his final year and a half in office with California facing numerous problems. The Los Angeles region is rebuilding two communities after the most destructive wildfires in Southern California\u2019s history. Homelessness remains pervasive. The state budget is teetering.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the midst of this, Mr. Newsom has used a podcast to embark on a political vision quest. \u201cThis is a selfish endeavor for me to understand the world I\u2019m living in,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For several minutes on a recent episode, Mr. Newsom and Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, last year\u2019s Democratic nominee for vice president, debated whether the party could \u2014 or should \u2014 try to appeal to men who may not share their social values.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Walz was reluctant: \u201cI can\u2019t message to misogynists.\u201d He was likewise dismissive of conservative commentators, including the ones Mr. Newsom had interviewed. \u201cHow do we push some of those guys back under a rock?\u201d Mr. Walz said, calling them \u201cbad guys.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom said that referring to men as \u201cmisogynists,\u201d as Mr. Walz did, was a political misstep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s a crisis of men and masculinity in this country,\u201d Mr. Newsom said. \u201cAnd that\u2019s a hard thing for Democrats because we want to lift up women. We want to lift up the oppressed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4d4cb02c\">Seeking wisdom from an ancient Roman<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Lately, Mr. Newsom has found solace in Stoicism, an ancient Greek and Roman philosophy that is enjoying a renaissance among some athletes and Silicon Valley entrepreneurs as a masculine guide for self improvement. It teaches self discipline and emotional resilience, emphasizing that the key to success is mastering the things you can control while maintaining calm about the things you can\u2019t. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom was turned on to the concept last year when he received \u201cMeditations\u201d by Marcus Aurelius, the ancient Roman emperor and Stoic philosopher. He has read it repeatedly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The teachings \u201chit me like a lightning bolt,\u201d he said. \u201cWhere the hell has this book been all my life?\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom has also tried to strengthen his mental fortitude by taking a morning cold plunge four days a week. He liked starting the day by overcoming something difficult, he said, but has fallen out of the habit in recent months. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Since the November election, Mr. Newsom has visited conservative parts of California to tout economic development ideas. Last week, he stood before a row of fire trucks in the Central Valley town of Modesto, Calif., to present a career education plan for students who were not college bound.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Republicans have mocked his shift. Greg Gutfeld, Fox News\u2019s late-night satirist, scoffed at the idea that Mr. Newsom and Mr. Walz were trying to define masculinity for the Democratic Party. Mr. Gutfeld played one clip in which he compared Mr. Newsom\u2019s hand gestures \u2014 something the governor often does in the throes of riffing on an idea \u2014 to milking a cow.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On the left, the governor\u2019s decision to engage with Mr. Kirk has infuriated Mr. Newsom\u2019s allies. Jodi Hicks, president of Planned Parenthood Affiliates of California, said that she welcomes Mr. Newsom\u2019s effort to explore why Democrats lost votes of young men and try to find better ways to communicate. But Mr. Kirk\u2019s positions against L.G.B.T.Q. rights amount to \u201chateful rhetoric that is harmful to our young men,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s toxic masculinity,\u201d Ms. Hicks said. \u201cI don\u2019t think you have to invite those folks on and give them a platform to explore how we can do better for our young men.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Democrats stand to learn something from Mr. Newsom\u2019s conversation with Mr. Kirk, said John Della Volpe, a pollster who worked on the Biden campaign and researches young voters at the Institute of Politics at Harvard\u2019s John F. Kennedy School of Government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has begun including a clip from that podcast in presentations to Democratic donors and campaign consultants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Democrats largely took them for granted,\u201d Mr. Della Volpe said of young men. \u201cIt was overemphasis on social issues and underemphasis on economic issues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The result: Trump won 56 percent of men age 18-29, according to AP VoteCast, a 15-point swing from 2020.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-75517ee6\">Why he split from Democrats on transgender athletes<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was Mr. Newsom\u2019s podcast musings on transgender athletes that drew particular attention. He broke with fellow Democrats when he agreed with Mr. Kirk that it\u2019s \u201cdeeply unfair\u201d for transgender athletes to compete against participants who were born female.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To some, it seemed like another calculated move. But Mr. Newsom had long felt conflicted about the issue, said Jason Elliott, a former deputy chief of staff to the governor who was also one of his top aides when Mr. Newsom was mayor of San Francisco. Because sports played a big role in developing his self-confidence, Mr. Newsom wrestled with the idea that some girls could lose opportunities to transgender athletes with a physiological advantage, Mr. Elliott said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOften, things that he has told us privately eventually seep their way into public discussion,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom has a record of expanding transgender rights. But the issue of athletic competition is different, he explained in the interview, because it \u201cimpedes other people\u2019s rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCan\u2019t we see that?\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know what\u2019s happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Wade Crowfoot, a friend of Mr. Newsom who is also his secretary of natural resources, said<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>that Mr. Newsom has long been fascinated with conservative media and routinely talks about what\u2019s on Fox News, sometimes bringing it up on their weekend hikes in Marin County or while fishing small lakes in the Sierra Nevada.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe\u2019s never been afraid to buck orthodoxy and by that, I mean advance something outside of the comfort zone of the Democratic Party,\u201d Mr. Crowfoot said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Early in Mr. Newsom\u2019s career, that meant pushing the party to the left by allowing gay and lesbian couples in San Francisco to marry in 2004. In recent years, the governor has pushed the party to the right at times, such as applauding conservative Supreme Court justices for ruling that local governments can clear homeless people from the streets. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom\u2019s podcast turn may have seemed out of nowhere, but it\u2019s not the first time he has launched a talk show. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He hosted a local radio program when he was the mayor of San Francisco. As lieutenant governor, he hosted a television show on Current TV, a defunct cable network, in which he interviewed figures from Hollywood and Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then, as now, Mr. Newsom explained the rationale for his program by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/1841488\/gavin-newsom-show-californias-lt-gov-raises-bar-political-tv\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a> he wanted to make public some of the conversations he has in private.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One interview from 2012 stands out in hindsight. As with his new podcast, Mr. Newsom was deferential, in awe of the ideas<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>explained by his guest. The guest, in turn, was eager and personable. Humble, even.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The businessman talked about his failures, his low points, the time he had to borrow money from friends. And how he made a big bet on a space company that he thought would fail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf something\u2019s important enough, it\u2019s still worth doing, even if the odds of success are low,\u201d Elon Musk said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom was enamored with the idea of Mr. Musk taking such big risks with Tesla, SpaceX and PayPal.
