In 1935, the government opened the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ireta.org\/a-look-at-treatment-history-the-narcotic-farm\/#:~:text=The%20Narcotic%20Farm%20was%20a,and%20find%20a%20permanent%20cure.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">United States Narcotic Farm<\/a> in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kentucky.com\/news\/local\/counties\/fayette-county\/article283737708.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Lexington<\/a>, Ky., to research and treat addiction. Over the years, residents included <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chetbaker.net\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Chet Baker<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.biography.com\/authors-writers\/william-s-burroughs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">William S. Burroughs<\/a> (who portrayed the institution in his novel, \u201cJunkie: Confessions of an Unredeemed Drug Addict\u201d). The program had high relapse rates and was tainted by drug experiments on human subjects. By 1975, as local treatment centers began to proliferate around the country, the program closed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In America, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/us\/blog\/substance-use-stigma-and-society\/202104\/the-current-importance-of-therapeutic-communities\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">therapeutic communities<\/a> for addiction treatment became popular in the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/tv-movies\/tv-movie-reviews\/born-in-synanon-rehab-cult-the-game-docuseries-attack-therapy-1234923038\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1960s<\/a> and \u201970s. Some, like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/what-happened-to-synanon-founder-charles-dederich-8622934\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Synanon<\/a>, became notorious for cultlike, abusive environments. There are now perhaps <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2015-18397-035\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">3,000 worldwide<\/a>, researchers estimate, including one that Mr. Kennedy has also praised \u2014 <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sanpatrignano.org\/en\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">San Patrignano,<\/a> an Italian program whose centerpiece is a highly regarded bakery, staffed by residents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf we do go down the road of large government-funded therapeutic communities, I\u2019d want to see some oversight to ensure they live up to modern standards,\u201d said Dr. Sabet, who is now president of the Foundation for Drug Policy Solutions. \u201cWe should get rid of the false dichotomy, too, between these approaches and medications, since we know they can work together for some people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Should Mr. Kennedy be confirmed, his authority to establish healing farms would be uncertain. Building federal treatment farms in \u201cdepressed rural areas,\u201d as he said in his documentary, presumably on public land, would hit political and legal roadblocks. Fully <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/klrd.gov\/2024\/07\/01\/marijuana-classification-and-implications-of-rescheduling\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">legalizing and taxing cannabis<\/a> to pay for the farms would require congressional action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the concluding moments of the documentary, Mr. Kennedy invoked Carl Jung, the Swiss psychiatrist whose views on spirituality influenced Alcoholics Anonymous.
