They say the race has been rigged in favor of Brice Oligui Nguema, the general who staged a coup in 2023 and has ignored his early promises to hand power over to a civilian.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is not a level playing field to begin with,\u201d said Joseph Siegle, director of research at the Africa Center for Strategic Studies, a Washington-based organization that is part of the U.S. Department of Defense. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gabon is a resource-rich country of 2.5 million that was long ruled by one family. Although wealthier than other countries in sub-Saharan Africa, unemployment is widespread and poverty is high, making those key issues for voters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here is what to know about the presidential contest. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6525653a\">Who are the main contenders?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A 50-year-old general who swapped his uniform for jeans, Jordan sneakers and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/moi_makaya\/status\/1909129497544192343?s=46\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Jackson\u2019s<\/a> dance moves on the campaign trail, Mr. Nguema is widely tipped to win.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Nguema served as an aide-de-camp to Gabon\u2019s long-ruling autocrat, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/06\/09\/world\/africa\/09bongo.html\" title=\"\">Omar Bongo<\/a>, and was head of the Republican Guard under his son, Ali Bongo Ondimba, who was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/08\/31\/world\/africa\/ali-bongo-ondimba-gabon-coup.html\" title=\"\">deposed<\/a> in 2023. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With that coup, Mr. Nguema ended the run of one of Africa\u2019s longest-ruling families.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>Omar Bongo held power for 41 years, and his son held office for 14. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The coup was the latest of nine military takeovers that have shaken West and Central Africa since 2020. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Nguema has rebranded himself as a conventional candidate in the election, with the campaign slogan \u201cIt\u2019s good,\u201d or \u201cC\u2019BON\u201d in French, a play on his initials.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>He has promised to build large infrastructure projects, including a new airport, calling himself \u201cBrice the Builder.\u201d <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has also vowed to preserve ties with France, the former colonial power, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/29\/world\/europe\/france-chad-military-ally.html\" title=\"\">has recently been ordered to withdraw<\/a> <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/01\/world\/africa\/ivory-coast-france-troop-withdrawal.html\" title=\"\">troops from several African countries<\/a>. Some 350 French troops are in Gabon, but Mr. Nguema has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g3zdHXhNJOE\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019m not chasing anyone out.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Paul Modoss, a 35-year-old entrepreneur, said on Friday that he would vote for Mr. Nguema because he had united the country and embodied renewal. \u201cYou can\u2019t call President Brice Oligui Nguema a dictator,\u201d he said. \u201cA dictator doesn\u2019t return power to the people through the ballot box.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His most serious opponent is Alain-Claude Bilie-By-Nze, who was Mr. Bongo\u2019s prime minister. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bilie-By-Nze, 57, has vowed to break with Gabon\u2019s pre-coup political system, dismantle its network and reduce French influence, even though he long operated within that system. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He has also called Mr. Nguema\u2019s potential election a threat to democracy and said he wants to diversify Gabon\u2019s economy and reduce its dependence on oil revenues. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Laur\u00e9a Mamboundou, a 26-year-old law student, said she would vote for Mr. Bilie-By-Nze for his political experience.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe is the most competent candidate today, but also the one who would be the easiest to sanction with our votes should he ever betray the people\u2019s trust,\u201d she said. \u201cThis is a guarantee against the drift we all fear.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-60ea1bab\">What are the main issues? <\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Gabon is rich in mineral resources. It holds a quarter of the world\u2019s reserves of manganese, a mineral used to produce steel. But its economy remains overly dependent on oil, which accounts for 38 percent of Gabon\u2019s gross domestic product. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The country is among the world\u2019s most corrupt countries, according to the watchdog <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.org\/en\/countries\/gabon\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Transparency International<\/a>. Over 40 percent of young people in Gabon are unemployed. And a third of its 2.5 million people live on less than $5.50 a day, according to the World Bank.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Under Mr. Nguema\u2019s leadership, the interim authorities adopted a new Constitution that allows members of the military to run for office. It also limits a president to two seven-year terms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Siegel said the general had borrowed from the playbook of another Central African country, Chad, whose leader<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>seized power when his father was killed in 2021, and who was later declared winner in an election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Bilie-By-Nze said Mr. Nguema had flouted electoral rules by using state funds to finance his campaign, while other candidate received no such state support. \u201cThe junta\u2019s leader has tailored a Constitution and an electoral law to his own needs to confiscate power,\u201d Mr. Bilie-By-Nze said in a statement.<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokesman for Mr. Nguema declined to comment.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-58dfe8a8\">A region full of aging leaders<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several Central African countries are ruled by authoritarian leaders, including Africa\u2019s top three longest-serving presidents. Two are Gabon\u2019s neighbors: the president<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>of Cameroon has been in power for 42 years and the president<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>of the Republic of Congo has held office for 38 years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Gabon, the two leading candidates have a long history with the Bongo family but have tried to distance themselves from it. Each has accused the other of being the candidate of the old regime. <\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-50b5d630\">When will the results be announced?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">About 860,000 people are expected to go to the polls on Saturday.
