kill Mr. Mangione as a political stunt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The motion filed Friday in the U.S. District Court of the Southern District said U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-doj-seeks-death-penalty\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">ordered<\/a><\/span> the death penalty to &#8220;carry out President Trump&#8217;s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mangione, 26, who faces <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-arraignment-state-charges\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">state murder and terrorism charges in New York<\/a><\/span>, along with\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/unitedhealthcare-ceo-murder-suspect-luigi-mangione-extradition-hearing\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">federal murder and stalking charges<\/a><\/span>, is accused of murdering\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/brian-thompson-unitedhealthcare-ceo-manhattan-shooting\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson<\/a><\/span>\u00a0last year in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mangione has\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/newyork\/news\/luigi-mangione-arraignment-state-charges\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">pleaded not guilty to 11 state charges<\/a><\/span>\u00a0and is not eligible for the death penalty in New York State. He has not yet been arraigned on the federal charges.<\/p>\n<p>Karen Agnifilo and Avi Moskowitz, Mangione&#8217;s attorneys, wrote in the motion that their client seeks relief because the attorney general prejudiced the grand jury pool and has corrupted the grand jury process by publicly issuing the death penalty direction to prosecutors via a press release.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Luigi Mangione&#8217;s murder of Brian Thompson \u2014 an innocent man and father of two young children \u2014 was a premeditated, cold-blooded assassination that shocked America. After careful consideration, I have directed federal prosecutors to seek the death penalty in this case as we carry out President Trump&#8217;s agenda to stop violent crime and Make America Safe Again,&#8221; Bondi <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/attorney-general-pamela-bondi-directs-prosecutors-seek-death-penalty-luigi-mangione\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">said <\/a>in a statement earlier in April.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>His attorneys also argued that Bondi&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DH6J_4RNIJt\/?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Instagram post<\/a>\u00a0following the press release in which she stated that Mangione was guilty of murder further prejudiced the grand jury process in the Southern District.<\/p>\n<p><em>This is a developing story.
