Together, the signs pointed to a souring mood as investors <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/04\/10\/business\/trump-tariffs-stocks\" title=\"\">assessed the worsening trade war with China<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Trump clarified that he had raised tariffs on Chinese goods by a total of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/business\/economy\/china-tariffs-145-percent.html\" title=\"\">145 percent<\/a> as tensions between Beijing and Washington showed no signs of easing. E.U. officials \u200bannounced that they would <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/world\/europe\/european-union-trump-tariffs-pause.html?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">delay plans for retaliatory tariffs<\/a> after Trump\u2019s decision to hit pause on some of his new import taxes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The markets on Wednesday had cheered Trump\u2019s decision to postpone many of his tariff plans for three months. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe president seems to have offset any relief it might have offered for the U.S. economy by simultaneously jacking up tariffs on China to 145 percent,\u201d my colleague Ana Swanson, who covers trade, said. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019ve seen some estimates saying that the impact of the most recent tariff structure is actually worse for consumers because most of the world\u2019s cellphones, laptops, toys, video games, blankets and party decorations come from China,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Many economists cautioned that the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/10\/business\/us-china-tariffs-trade-war.html\" title=\"\">full repercussions<\/a> from the trade war would not be felt for weeks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here\u2019s a quick guide to how the tariffs between China and the U.S. have ramped up in the last two months.<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"imageblock-wrapper\">\n<figure class=\"img-sz-small css-lt5b41 e1g7ppur0\" aria-label=\"media\" role=\"group\"><figcaption data-testid=\"photoviewer-children-caption\" class=\"css-13ytnnu ewdxa0s0\"><span class=\"css-14fe1uy e1z0qqy90\"><span class=\"css-1ly73wi e1tej78p0\">Credit&#8230;<\/span><span><span aria-hidden=\"false\">By Agnes Chang and Pablo Robles<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-27d65f94\">More on the trade war<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-47888cca\">What to watch in the Iran nuclear talks<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The U.S. and Iran are sending envoys to Oman for high-stakes talks tomorrow on a nuclear deal. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In some ways, Iran will arrive at the table in a weaker position: Israel has destroyed part of Tehran\u2019s air defenses, although Iran claims it has rebuilt them, and greatly diminished its proxy forces, Hamas and Hezbollah. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Iran is also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/09\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-nuclear-deal.html\" title=\"\">far closer now to being able to produce a nuclear weapon<\/a> than it was when the last accord was negotiated in 2015. Trump pulled out of that deal in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To learn more about what\u2019s at stake, I reached out to my colleague Farnaz Fassihi, our U.N. bureau chief who also reports on Iran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">What will you be watching for?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Farnaz:<\/strong> We are not expecting a major breakthrough on Saturday, but that the talks are even happening is significant. We are expecting them to define a framework for negotiations in this round and clarify what issues are on the table, and to see if they will announce a second round of talks. We are also watching to see if Iran\u2019s foreign minister, Abbas Araghchi, and Steve Witkoff, the U.S. envoy, will meet in person, which would be a very good sign.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">What do the U.S. and Iran each hope to gain?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Iran, the threat of war has never been more serious. It needs sanctions relief to improve the dire state of its economy. For the U.S., Iran\u2019s rapid escalation of nuclear enrichment and ability to produce bombs, if they choose to do so, is not acceptable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Would Iran agree to dismantle its nuclear sites?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This will be a deal breaker from the get-go. It\u2019s also not entirely clear if this is Trump\u2019s goal. He has said his goal is for Iran not to have a nuclear weapon, and from Iran\u2019s perspective, that can be achieved with strict monitoring mechanisms and a reduction of uranium enrichment levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4ad9b942\">The U.S. tried to strike a hostage deal with Hamas<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Trump administration officials met three times last month with senior Hamas officials in Qatar. The talks defied a longstanding U.S. policy against engaging with the armed group, which the U.S. considers a terrorist organization. But Trump\u2019s aides were eager to free Edan Alexander, the last living American Israeli hostage in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">However, in the face of Israel\u2019s opposition, Hamas\u2019s hesitation and the Trump administration\u2019s shifting position, an agreement to free Alexander never came together.
