The majority of cases have been reported in Texas, where more than 500 people have been infected and\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/texas\/news\/texas-measles-outbreak-second-child-death-unvaccinated\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">two children<\/a><\/span>\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-death-texas-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">have died<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what to know about some of the common measles myths:<\/p>\n<h2>Myth: Measles isn&#8217;t serious<\/h2>\n<p>Measles is a highly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/hcp\/clinical-overview\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">contagious disease<\/a>\u00a0and in some cases, it can cause\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/signs-symptoms\/?CDC_AAref_Val=https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/symptoms\/complications.html#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">severe infections<\/a>\u00a0in the lungs and brain that can lead to cognitive issues, deafness or death. Two children in Texas and an adult in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-new-mexico-death-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">New Mexico<\/a><\/span> have died in this year&#8217;s outbreak.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While most people&#8217;s symptoms improve, many who are unvaccinated can suffer greatly. For example, about 1 in 5 unvaccinated people with measles will be hospitalized, about 1 out of every 1,000 children who catch it will develop brain swelling that can lead to brain damage. Up to 3 of every 1,000 children infected with measles will die, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Up to 9 out of 10 susceptible people who come in close contact to someone with measles will get the disease, the CDC says. The virus is transmitted by contact with infectious droplets or by breathing the air an infected person breathed, coughed or sneezed in. Even after an infected person leaves an area, the virus can remain infections in the air for up to two hours, the CDC says.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth: The MMR vaccine isn&#8217;t effective<\/h2>\n<p>Decades of research and analysis show the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">measles vaccination<\/a><\/span>, which is normally given as part of the combination measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, is\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-measles-outbreak-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">safe and effective<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>One dose of the MMR vaccine is 93% effective against measles and the recommended two doses is 97% effective, the CDC says. And\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-vaccine-booster-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">for most people<\/a><\/span>, the MMR vaccine will protect you for life.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas outbreak is primarily affecting\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/vaccination-rate-decline-measles-polio-outbreaks\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">children and teenagers<\/a><\/span>, nearly all of whom were\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-texas-preventable-symptoms\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">unvaccinated<\/a><\/span>\u00a0or have an unknown vaccination status. State and local health officials confirmed the first patient who died was an unvaccinated school-aged child and the second was an unvaccinated 8-year-old girl. Neither had underlying health conditions before they got sick from measles, the Texas health department said.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/how-many-lives-vaccines-have-saved\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Before vaccines became available<\/a><\/span> in the 1960s, an estimated 3 to 4 million Americans would catch measles each year, about 48,000 would be hospitalized, and between 400 to 500 \u2014 mostly children \u2014 died each year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/history.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">CDC says<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:453px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-Xf256\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Xf256\/full.png\" alt=\"Line chart showing the number of measles cases in the U.S. from 1939 to present.\"\/><\/div>\n<p><amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/Xf256\/4\/\">  <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>After previously downplaying the growing number cases, and a history of making <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/live-updates\/rfk-jr-confirmation-hearing\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">false and misleading claims<\/a><\/span> about the safety of the MMR vaccine, Health and Human Services Secretary\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/rfk-jr-hhs-challenges-make-america-healthy-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Robert F. Kennedy Jr.<\/a><\/span>\u00a0voiced <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cdc-texas-measles-outbreak-layoffs-rfk-vaccines\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">support for the vaccine<\/a><\/span> during an April visit to Texas, where he attended a service for the second child who died there.<\/p>\n<p>In a social media\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SecKennedy\/status\/1908967854394982414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">post<\/a>, he wrote: &#8220;The most effective way to prevent the spread of measles is the MMR vaccine.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an opinion piece published by Fox News in March, Kennedy also encouraged the shot, writing, &#8220;vaccines not only protect individual children from measles, but also contribute to community immunity, protecting those who are unable to be vaccinated due to medical reasons.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Dr. C\u00e9line Gounder, CBS News medical contributor and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/hhs-secretary-kennedy-attends-funeral-of-second-child-who-died-of-measles-related-causes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">said on &#8220;CBS Mornings&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0that that Kennedy&#8217;s comments are an important step.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The secretary is one of the leading proponents of the myth that these vaccines cause autism, and so for him to be acknowledging that one of the most important tools we have to curb this outbreak is vaccination is really important here,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2>Myth: The MMR vaccine causes autism<\/h2>\n<p>Numerous scientific studies over many years have shown there is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC6768751\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">no connection<\/a> between autism and the MMR vaccine. Still, the unfounded fears persist. This is <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/doctor-blames-discredited-autism-vaccine-link-research-for-measles-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">largely due<\/a><\/span> to a paper published in The Lancet medical journal in the 1990s that was later retracted after its data was <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/report-study-linking-vaccine-autism-fraudulent\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">found to be false and manipulated<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But vaccines are among the most studied medical interventions. For example, more than 12,000 people took part in clinical trials of the most recent MMR vaccine, according to the FDA.<\/p>\n<p>Autism Speaks, an autism awareness organization, also makes clear that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismspeaks.org\/do-vaccines-cause-autism\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">autism and vaccines are not linked<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Scientists have conducted extensive research all over the world over the last two decades to examine the link between childhood vaccinations and autism.\u202fThe result of this research is clear: vaccines do not cause autism,&#8221; the organization&#8217;s website states. \u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Myth: Vitamin A can prevent or cure measles<\/h2>\n<p>Kennedy has also shared some misleading information about the potential role of vitamins in measles treatment and prevention.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/2871418\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">In some studies<\/a>, Vitamin A has been shown to reduce the severity of measles and the risk of death from the virus \u2014 but these studies were among highly malnourished populations in low-income countries. Research shows Vitamin A supplements are\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/7355846\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">not a substitute<\/a>\u00a0for measles vaccination, even among severely malnourished groups.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vitamin A reduces the risk of some complications among severely malnourished kids who have Vitamin A deficiency. It does not prevent measles or the damage the infection does to the immune system,&#8221; Gounder, who is also an infectious disease specialist, said. &#8220;Vitamin A is not a substitute for measles vaccination.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In the U.S., Vitamin A deficiency is rare,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK567744\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">affecting less than 1%<\/a>\u00a0of the population.
