The changes were first reported by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/investigations\/2025\/04\/06\/national-park-service-underground-railroad-history-slavery\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A spokesperson for the National Park Service <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2025\/04\/07\/us\/harriet-tubman-underground-railroad-national-parks-service\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told CNN<\/a><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>that changes to the page had been made \u201cwithout approval\u201d from the agency\u2019s leadership, and that the old version was \u201cimmediately restored.\u201d The agency did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The web page appeared to be one of many on <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/14\/us\/politics\/arlington-cemetery-website-dei.html\" title=\"\">government websites<\/a> that had recently been edited or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/jackie-robinson-defense-department.html\" title=\"\">erased<\/a> as the Trump administration <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/03\/07\/us\/trump-federal-agencies-websites-words-dei.html\" title=\"\">worked to purge<\/a> references to diversity and inclusion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Materials on the Arlington National Cemetery website highlighting the graves of Black and female service members have vanished or been obscured. An article on the Defense Department website devoted to Jackie Robinson\u2019s military career disappeared and then <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/jackie-robinson-defense-department.html\" title=\"\">reappeared<\/a>. And another Defense Department page featuring the biography of Maj. Gen. Charles Calvin Rogers, a Black Army general who received the Medal of Honor, also disappeared before being <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/jackie-robinson-defense-department.html\" title=\"\">restored<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, Senator Chris Van Hollen of Maryland, a Democrat, accused the president of trying to \u201cwhitewash\u201d history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cTrump is trying to rewrite the history of the Underground Railroad \u2014 even diminishing its conductor, MD\u2019s own Harriet Tubman,\u201d Mr. Van Hollen said in a post on X, formerly Twitter. \u201cThe Underground Railroad is an important part of the American story. We cannot let him whitewash it as part of his larger effort to erase our history.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
