Mr. Paxton did not testify.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tom Nesbitt, a lawyer for Mr. Brickman, celebrated the decision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYesterday\u2019s judgment is the natural and intended consequence of Ken Paxton\u2019s choice to surrender rather than fight the whistle-blowers\u2019 claims in court,\u201d he said in a statement on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The plaintiffs and other aides notified Mr. Paxton\u2019s office in late 2020 that they had gone to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and accused him of using his public office to help Nate Paul, a political donor to Mr. Paxton.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In November 2020, the four advisers were fired, at which point they sued, arguing that their dismissals were illegal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Paxton condemned the ruling, and said that he plans to appeal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNow a liberal Austin judge wants the people of Texas to pay even more for the Phelan\/Biden corrupt impeachment scheme with a ridiculous judgment that is not based on the facts or the law,\u201d he said in a statement on Saturday, referring to Dade Phelan, who was the Texas House speaker during Mr. Paxton\u2019s impeachment, and former president Joe Biden.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Judge Mauzy also ordered the Texas attorney general\u2019s office to pay some legal fees for the plaintiffs if her decision were appealed to the Supreme Court of Texas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2023, a Republican-led committee in the Texas Legislature <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/05\/25\/us\/texas-paxton-impeachment.html\" title=\"\">recommended Mr. Paxton\u2019s impeachment<\/a> over allegations of corruption and abuse of office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">House investigators said that Mr. Paul, a real estate developer, paid for renovations at Mr. Paxton\u2019s home in Austin in return for favors. Mr. Paxton was accused of sharing confidential documents with Mr. Paul and hiring a lawyer for him. Both Mr. Paul and Mr. Paxton have denied the allegations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Federal investigators were also looking into these allegations, but the Justice Department declined to prosecute Mr. Paxton in the final weeks of President Biden\u2019s term, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/ken-paxton-ag-federal-investigation-justice-department-b4c3469a90f1c546dcb69177c432a383\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In September 2023, the Texas Senate <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/16\/us\/ken-paxton-impeachment.html\" title=\"\">acquitted<\/a> Mr. Paxton in a vote that fell largely along party lines.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Paxton, a Republican <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/02\/us\/politics\/paxton-cornyn-senate.html\" title=\"\">considering a Senate run<\/a> against the Republican senator, John Cornyn, called the federal investigation a \u201cbogus witch hunt\u201d on social media on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Brickman, one of the plaintiffs, criticized Mr. Paxton\u2019s intent to appeal the Travis County case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPaxton now wants to appeal? He literally already admitted he broke the law to @SupremeCourt_TX and the Travis County District Court \u2014 all to stop his own deposition,\u201d Mr. Brickman said on <a class=\"css-yywogo\"
