He said he believed that in the next few months, the pain could run even deeper, so he was building up a rainy-day fund. But he was hopeful that the tariffs would eventually pay off, most likely by the next presidential election.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAs a business owner, you don\u2019t make money right away, right?\u201d said Mr. Chaudhry, who voted for Mr. Trump. \u201cWhen I listen to Trump, what he\u2019s saying is, \u2018It\u2019s a short-term pain, but there\u2019s the light at the end of the tunnel.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But while his confidence in Mr. Trump\u2019s economic management remained unshaken, Mr. Chaudhry said he was still worried about the administration\u2019s approach to immigration. He was distressed about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/04\/us\/politics\/el-salvador-deportation-migrant-trump.html\" title=\"\">a 29-year-old migrant father sent to a Salvadoran prison<\/a> by mistake.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not only do such arrests and swift expulsions run counter to due process, Mr. Chaudhry said, but they were potentially dangerous, in that they could create untold numbers of angry young people who felt let down by the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou cannot separate families like that,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have created all those orphans, and regardless of whatever happened, they\u2019re all going to remember this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-67c81546\">\u2018It\u2019s just not going to turn out good for anybody.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-4e4b50a\"><span>Veronica McCloud, 63, from Charleston, S.C.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For years, Veronica McCloud has driven hundreds of miles every month \u2014 and sometimes weekly \u2014 to visit her mother in a small South Carolina town. Each round trip \u2014 almost 260 miles \u2014 has taken a toll on her Toyota Camry, now 10 years old.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now she was worried that Mr. Trump\u2019s tariffs would result in higher vehicle prices. As a retiree on a fixed income, she carefully considered both everyday and big-ticket purchases. She has been weighing whether to replace her car, she said, wondering how long she has before prices go up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI pray that my car lasts \u2014 I don\u2019t even know if me and my husband can even afford it,\u201d Ms. McCloud said, referring to the possibility of purchasing a new car.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She learned of Mr. Trump\u2019s tariff plan when he was campaigning, but she had hoped he would reconsider such a risky bet, or at least show more favor toward allies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A longtime Democrat who voted for Kamala Harris, Ms. McCloud hadn\u2019t agreed with most of Mr. Trump\u2019s policies. But she might have been more supportive if he had provided better, fuller explanations of his plans. The flurry of tariffs, she said, were just the latest example of a rollout that felt rushed, confusing and without regard for working and retired Americans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s just not going to turn out good for anybody,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. McCloud said if the economic squeeze was a long-term one, she might have to leave retired life behind and get a part-time job. The question she kept asking was, if the president knew the risks, \u201cwhy are you plowing ahead?\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Audra D. S. Burch<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-c0b66f5\">\u2018The risk-taking, the bold moves, the scary stuff that he does, to me, is no surprise.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-266c8bb1\"><span>Dave Abdallah, 59, from Dearborn Heights, Mich.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s a good idea to try,\u201d Dave Abdallah said, referring to the new tariffs against other nations. They were bold, he felt, and he was a fan of daring action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhy can\u2019t we charge them with the same thing to get them to either lower theirs, or stop a lot of products from being imported into the United States?\u201d Mr. Abdallah said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Was he nervous about potential downsides \u2014 rising prices, an economic downturn? Not really, he said, but given how many people in his area worked in the car industry or knew someone who did, he had concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hopefully, any damage to that industry and the larger economy wouldn\u2019t last too long, said Mr. Abdallah, a real estate agent who voted for the Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Hopefully, he said, the tariffs would help by dampening foreign competition and creating boom times for auto factories.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s the long-term goal,\u201d he said. \u201cIs it foolproof? I don\u2019t know.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Abdallah wasn\u2019t startled by Mr. Trump\u2019s moves \u2014 he had been reading his books since the 1980s, when he first became intrigued by Mr. Trump\u2019s go-for-it attitude.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe risk-taking, the bold moves, the scary stuff that he does, to me, is no surprise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Kurt Streeter<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-31d4b057\">\u2018These are tough decisions that have to be made or we are going to be staring at some major economic issues.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-554e88c1\"><span>Perry Hunter, 55, from Sellersburg, Ind.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Perry Hunter, a high school teacher who voted for Mr. Trump, the tariffs made sense: He felt they were an effective way to raise revenue for a nation in debt.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe could have universal health care, we could have free, universal education after high school, we could feed the poor, but we just don\u2019t have the money right now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He added, \u201cThese are tough decisions that have to be made or we are going to be staring at some major economic issues in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The drop in the stock market didn\u2019t concern Mr. Hunter as much as it might others \u2014 he said he had no money invested in it. Still, he said he thought short-term pain would be tolerable if the United States was headed for a boom.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Hunter said he was watching gas prices closely \u2014 he said they had gone up recently in his area \u2014 and noted that high, local grocery prices were nothing new. Always careful about his spending, he said he didn\u2019t plan to change his habits. For now, he was willing to wait many months to assess things.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But Mr. Hunter was troubled by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/04\/us\/politics\/el-salvador-deportation-migrant-trump.html\" title=\"\">the mistaken deportation<\/a> of the migrant father to the Salvadoran prison. It could be \u201cthe line in the sand\u201d for him to possibly drop his support for the president, he said, \u201cif we make these mistakes and don\u2019t correct them quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Juliet Macur<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-7bb96f03\">\u2018Give us a little more information, so we can wrap our head around what it is you\u2019re doing.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1ab7f5cf\"><span>Darlene Alfieri, 55, from Erie, Pa.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Darlene Alfieri just wanted some answers. She was thinking of lowering prices at her flower shop, and about whether to put fewer roses in arrangements. Because flowers are optional purchases, she said she felt her business could be vulnerable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was even more worried about how her children, who didn\u2019t have the savings she did, would fare should there be a serious downturn.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Alfieri, a Democrat, voted for Mr. Trump because she wanted big changes, and she knew it could be messy. But she had been through rough patches before, she said. In the 2008-9 recession, her stock holdings cratered, but they recovered enough within a few years for her to pay for her daughter\u2019s college tuition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was willing to endure some disruption in pursuit of longer-term goals, but right now no one was explaining what these goals might be, in detail.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cGive us a little more information, so we can wrap our head around what it is you\u2019re doing,\u201d she said. Without that, she said, it looked like Mr. Trump was throwing darts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She believed that the administration did have a plan, she said, \u201cbut I want to know when the hell they\u2019re going to clue the rest of us in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While Ms. Alfieri has been unimpressed by the Democrats\u2019 responses, she also insisted that time was running out for the president to explain to voters what he was doing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf he hasn\u2019t shown the American people that this really is putting us in a better position, I think that\u2019s his expiration date,\u201d she said, referring to whenever campaigning for the next presidential election ramps up. \u201cAt that point, if people can\u2019t see it, can\u2019t understand it, can\u2019t make sense of it, can\u2019t survive it, they\u2019re going to move on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1aee06ab\">\u2018The world doesn\u2019t know how to interpret what\u2019s going on.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1b125f5b\"><span>Jaime Escobar Jr., 46, from Roma, Texas<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-13\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The mayor of a small border town, Jaime Escobar Jr., was relieved when he learned Mexican goods would be spared by Mr. Trump\u2019s newest tariff plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Escobar, who voted for Mr. Trump after years as a Democrat, said many of his constituents rely on tomatoes, avocados and vegetables from Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe won\u2019t hurt too much on that end,\u201d he said. But he also said he would continue to monitor how recent, previously announced tariffs on Mexico would affect his town.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He believes that in the long run, Mr. Trump\u2019s economic plan could bring more manufacturing jobs to the U.S. side of the border. Many neighboring cities in Mexico are known for plants that manufacture items like car parts, TV sets and electronic widgets. He said he would like to see similar jobs in his area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-14\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI\u2019m not an expert in economics, but I do see how he\u2019s trying to bring manufacturing back,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cIt\u2019s not going to happen from one day to the next.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Escobar said he was willing to give Mr. Trump time to make it pay off.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSome people say it\u2019s a force for good or for bad, but he is a force,\u201d he said, adding that Mr. Trump \u201cis throwing a wrench in the system, and people don\u2019t know what to think.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, the rocky stock market worries Mr. Escobar. \u201cThe world doesn\u2019t know how to interpret what\u2019s going on,\u201d he added. \u201cSo it does concern me. I would be lying if I said that it didn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Edgar Sandoval<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-56d98700\">\u2018I still want to keep my vibes up, and hope and trust.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-26f5c843\"><span>Tali Jackont, 57, from Los Angeles<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-15\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tali Jackont was holding out hope that this week\u2019s tariffs would end up helping the United States, but she was worried.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-16\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt is too risky,\u201d said Ms. Jackont, a longtime Democrat who voted for Mr. Trump, in part because she thought he could help the economy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But she quickly offered a caveat: \u201cI still want to keep my vibes up, and hope and trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Jackont, an educator born in Israel, compared Mr. Trump\u2019s tariff policy to someone tossing ingredients together haphazardly, hoping for the best. Sometimes, she said, \u201cby coincidence,\u201d something good comes from this kind of risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was dismayed, she said, that the tariff tactics could strengthen President Vladimir Putin of Russia because no taxes were placed on his nation this week, while the policies could weaken longtime alliances with Europe, Canada and Mexico.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And prices for virtually all of her groceries and many regular purchases like health insurance, car insurance and gas were already climbing, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the tariff announcement, how long would Ms. Jackont wait for Mr. Trump to bring about a price drop?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not longer than six months, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen someone tells you that he\u2019s an expert in some area, your expectations are high,\u201d she said. \u201cThat\u2019s why I give him a certain time. Maybe it\u2019s a short time.
