Informational pages about the Constitution and past presidents, up in various forms since President George W. Bush was in office, all vanished.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/upshot\/trump-government-websites-missing-pages.html\" title=\"\">Thousands of other government web pages<\/a> had also been taken down or modified, including content about vaccines, hate crimes, low-income children, opioid addiction and veterans, before <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/cdc-fda-websites-restored-ad1ec005261b31986ddcd3d1d17b249d\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a court order<\/a> temporarily blocked part of the sweeping erasure. A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.citizensforethics.org\/legal-action\/letters\/deletion-of-jan-6-charges-database-appears-to-violate-the-law\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Justice Department database<\/a> tracking criminal charges and convictions linked to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol was removed. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/31\/health\/trump-cdc-dei-gender.html\" title=\"\">Segments of data sets<\/a> are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/usaids-demographic-health-surveys\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">gone<\/a>, some of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/04\/business\/economy\/gdp-data-lutnick-commerce-secretary.html\" title=\"\">experts who produced them<\/a> were dismissed, and many <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/03\/07\/us\/trump-federal-agencies-websites-words-dei.html\" title=\"\">mentions of words<\/a> like \u201cBlack,\u201d \u201cwomen\u201d and \u201cdiscrimination\u201d have evaporated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Trump\u2019s team is selectively stripping away the public record, reconstructing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/24\/business\/trump-misinformation-false-claims.html\" title=\"\">his preferred vision of America<\/a> in the negative space of purged history, archivists and historians said. As data and resources are deleted or altered, something foundational is also at risk: Americans\u2019 ability to access and evaluate their past, and with it, their already shaky trust in facts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is not a cost-cutting mechanism,\u201d said Kenny Evans, who studies science and technology policy at Rice University\u2019s Baker Institute for Public Policy and runs the White House Scientists Archive at the school. \u201cThis slide toward secrecy and lack of transparency is an erosion of democratic norms.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Anna Kelly, a White House spokeswoman, said on X that the disposal process was standard practice for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/annakelly47\/status\/1899596521558945988?s=46\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">old courtesy copies of paperwork<\/a> that were largely backed up on classified computer systems. In an emailed statement, she did not address concerns about the removed records, but said that the president regularly communicated with news outlets and directly with the public and was \u201cleading the most transparent administration in history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe is adding transparency by exposing the vast waste, fraud and abuse across the federal government and restoring accountability to taxpayers,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The campaign of deletion does more than amplify the administration\u2019s policy priorities \u2014 it buries evidence of the alternatives in a MAGA-branded memory hole. Several information experts said that Mr. Trump\u2019s executive orders have authoritarian overtones, reminiscent of when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.404media.co\/russia-clones-wikipedia-censors-it-bans-original\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Russia cloned Wikipedia<\/a>, an online encyclopedia, and stripped it of unflattering material. Information experts and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/civilrights.org\/blog\/disappearing-data-why-we-must-stop-trumps-attempts-to-erase-our-communities\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">civil rights groups<\/a> fear that a historical vacuum could jeopardize accountability and breed mistrust, especially in an already <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/07\/11\/technology\/disinformation-tools.html\" title=\"\">hostile political environment for researchers who are trying to fight disinformation<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere are tectonic plates that are shifting, and it\u2019s a new version of truth that is being portrayed, and that, I think, is the most profound danger we have ever faced as a country,\u201d said Laurence H. Tribe, a constitutional scholar and professor emeritus at Harvard Law School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even Utah\u2019s Republican lieutenant governor called on Mr. Trump to \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DeidreHenderson\/status\/1900397293649748419\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bring back our history<\/a>\u201d after the first American woman to legally vote was removed from the website for Arlington National Cemetery, along with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241215125043\/https:\/\/www.arlingtoncemetery.mil\/Explore\/Notable-Graves\/Womens-History\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a section<\/a> on other notable women (<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.arlingtoncemetery.mil\/Explore\/Notable-Graves\/Politics-Government\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">her profile<\/a> is once again available, but the women\u2019s history section is not). References to transgender people disappeared from the National Park Service\u2019s web page for the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/13\/nyregion\/stonewall-transgender-parks-service.html\" title=\"\">Stonewall National Monument<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump is not known as an enthusiast of document preservation: Past employees have described his <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/us-news\/2021\/jan\/17\/historians-having-to-tape-together-records-that-trump-tore-up\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">penchant<\/a> for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/story\/2018\/06\/10\/trump-papers-filing-system-635164\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ripping up documents<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/08\/08\/politics\/trump-white-house-notes-toilet-photos-cnntv\/index.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">flushing papers down the toilet<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But his administration has surfaced some government data. In March, the National Archives released some <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/jfk-assassination-files-takeaways.html\" title=\"\">64,000 documents<\/a> about the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, including accounting records that contained the Social Security numbers of dozens of government workers from the late 1970s, some of them still living.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The restructuring effort led by Elon Musk through his Department of Government Efficiency, which had been caught in a series of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/21\/upshot\/doge-musk-trump-errors.html\" title=\"\">high-profile errors<\/a>, tried to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/03\/us\/politics\/doge-musk-contracts-wall.html\" title=\"\">delete<\/a> or <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/us\/politics\/doge-errors-funding-grants-claims.html\" title=\"\">obscure<\/a> the mistakes before reversing course last month and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/us\/politics\/doge-federal-grants-identifying-information.html\" title=\"\">adding more details<\/a> that fact-checkers could use to confirm its claims about the savings it had achieved from canceling federal grants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The historical record, however, remains under intense pressure and not just from the government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Musk has a vendetta against Wikipedia, which the billionaire derided as \u201cWokepedia\u201d last year. He called the encyclopedia, which is written and edited by volunteers from the general public, \u201can extension of legacy media propaganda\u201d after an entry described <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/24\/world\/europe\/elon-musk-roman-salute-nazi.html\" title=\"\">a gesture<\/a> he had made during Mr. Trump\u2019s recent inauguration as being \u201ccompared to a Nazi salute.\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/jimmy_wales\/status\/1881781414431248739\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jimmy Wales<\/a>, a founder of Wikipedia, pushed back on the social media platform X, saying \u201cthat\u2019s fact. Every element of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Data Foundation, a think tank, said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/datafoundation.org\/news\/reports\/588\/588-Evidence-Capacity-Pulse-Report-March-19-\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in a report<\/a> last month that changes in federal evidence gathering<span class=\"css-8l6xbc evw5hdy0\">  <\/span>are coinciding with similar shifts in the private data sector. Those include more than 2,000 layoffs and other departures in March and several analysis firms shutting down entirely. A year ago, Google also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2024\/2\/2\/24058985\/google-search-cache-feature-discontinued\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">removed links to cached pages<\/a> from its search results, stripping away a longtime feature that helped researchers and others track changes on websites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Resources from the government have become especially important as researchers find themselves limited or cut off from data reserves kept by social media companies, said Samuel Woolley, the disinformation studies chair at the University of Pittsburgh.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe idea that suddenly we no longer need oversight or access to the information that allows us to conduct oversight is worrying,\u201d he said. \u201cGetting rid of public records and people who study things like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/20\/business\/trump-foreign-influence-election-interference.html\" title=\"\">influence operations<\/a> amounts to a kind of censorship by omission.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Outside the government, many archivists are now rushing to preserve endangered material.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Data Rescue Project, which launched in February, is cataloging <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.datarescueproject.org\/current-efforts\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">preservation efforts<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/baserow.datarescueproject.org\/public\/grid\/Nt_M6errAkVRIc3NZmdM8wcl74n9tFKaDLrr831kIn4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">backed up<\/a> government data sets. Since 2008, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.archive.org\/2025\/02\/06\/update-on-the-2024-2025-end-of-term-web-archive\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">End of Term Web Archive<\/a> has conducted \u201ca comprehensive harvest\u201d of federal government domains and chronicled changes from administration to administration. Initiatives like the Environmental Data &amp; Governance Initiative and the Open Environmental Data Project are storing copies of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/21\/climate\/government-websites-climate-environment-data.html\" title=\"\">government climate data<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another key participant: The Internet Archive, a 28-year-old nonprofit library housed in a stately former Christian Science church in San Francisco. Some 140 workers, mostly engineers, archive more than a billion URLs a day with help from partners such as Cloudflare, WordPress, Reddit and Wikipedia\u2019s parent organization, Wikimedia. The work is funded through donations and web archiving agreements with more than 1,300 schools, museums and libraries.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Archive has collected more than 700,000 terabytes of archived web pages as one of the partners working on the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/eotarchive.org\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">End of Term project<\/a>, identifying more than 150,000 government pages that have gone offline since the inauguration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing this time around is unprecedented, both in terms of the scope and the scale of the web-based resources that are being taken offline, and material on those pages that is being changed,\u201d said Mark Graham, the director of the Wayback Machine, a digital repository operated through the Internet Archive. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Archive has faced difficulties in recent years, such as copyright lawsuits from record labels and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/04\/technology\/internet-archive-appeals-court-ruling.html\" title=\"\">book publishers<\/a> seeking hundreds of millions of dollars in damages (the organization had a $28 million budget in 2023). It has also been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.archive.org\/2024\/11\/14\/learning-from-cyberattacks\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">targeted by cyberattacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump administration, however, has not been an obstacle. Mr. Musk has called the archive \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1796053894558040344\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">awesome<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/elonmusk\/status\/1742788199930364213?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a public good that should exist<\/a>,\u201d even as he complained about \u201ca ton of negative\u201d content that concerned him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In February, government lawyers argued that the removal of information from the C.D.C. website caused limited harm because the scrubbed pages could still be viewed on the Wayback Machine. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2025\/us\/trump-administration-lawsuits.html\" title=\"\">A federal judge disagreed<\/a>, noting that the site does not capture every page, and the ones that are archived do not appear on search engines and can only be found using their original URL.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Graham, an Air Force veteran who can rattle off URLs from memory, said he has worked seven days a week with few breaks since Mr. Trump took office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019ve seen examples throughout history and all over the world where governments attempt to change culture, change the values of a population by changing and\/or restricting access to information,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we still see that to this day<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/04\/05\/technology\/trump-history-websites.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Soon after the new administration arrived, things began to go missing from the White House website.
