And then there\u2019s Eliot Tatelman of Jordan\u2019s Furniture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While not well known outside New England, Mr. Tatelman has been a fixture for years on local television, hawking mattresses and sofas in humorous, relatively low-budget ads that made him one of the region\u2019s instantly recognizable personalities, an avuncular pitchman with a ponytail guaranteeing \u201cunderprices.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, Mr. Tatelman is stepping away from his job, relinquishing his crown as New England\u2019s king of couches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He announced this week that he was retiring as president of Jordan\u2019s and that his sons, Michael and Josh, were taking over as the fourth generation of the family to run the furniture chain. They already serve as co-chief executives of the company, which is based in Dedham, Mass., and has 1,200 employees and eight stores in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an interview on Friday, Mr. Tatelman, 79, said he began thinking about retiring when his wife of 56 years, June, died in May. It made him think about \u201chow fast and precious life is,\u201d he said. He said he realized \u201cit\u2019s time to step back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The announcement set off sadness and nostalgia in New England, a region known for fiercely guarding its traditions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou think about New England and it\u2019s hard not to think about Jordan\u2019s Furniture and to include it in all things you think about growing up,\u201d said Douglas Quintal, a senior executive-in-residence in the department of marketing communication at Emerson College.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Quintal, who was raised in Peabody, Mass., has made his own pilgrimages to Jordan\u2019s over the years, to buy a bedroom set, a sofa and a love seat.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s sad to see the changing of the guard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The ads that helped make Mr. Tatelman famous often featured him and his younger brother, Barry, who also ran Jordan\u2019s until he left in 2006 to produce shows on Broadway. They were self-deprecating and resolutely local, tying the brand to New England institutions like the Red Sox.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Nmvm5prPxN8\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">one from the early 2000s<\/a>, the brothers are shown dressed in Red Sox uniforms, lying in Jordan\u2019s beds on the field at Fenway Park. Barry reaches up and lazily catches a fly ball and Eliot delivers the closer: \u201cYou know what the secret to this game is?\u201d he asks. \u201cA good night\u2019s sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In another, Eliot and Barry <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4WJyxi8fg68\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sleep soundly<\/a> on a Jordan\u2019s mattress in the audience of a Boston rock club, as Entrain, a band from Martha\u2019s Vineyard, plays loud funk music to a crowd of dancing fans. The tagline? \u201cWith the right mattress, you can sleep through anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Beyond the ads, the Tatelmans turned the gargantuan stores themselves into attractions, like amusement parks with rides and entertainment \u2014 a movie theater with moving seats called the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=f8SWehYMTkM\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Motion Odyssey Movie<\/a>, IMAX theaters, ropes courses and a reincarnation of a Christmas display called the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Hwkgv_tWWa4\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Enchanted Village<\/a> that was featured for years at the Jordan Marsh department store in downtown Boston.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The guiding philosophy was that buying a dresser should be fun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhen kids are crying because it\u2019s time to leave a furniture store, you know you\u2019ve accomplished something,\u201d Eliot Tatelman <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=C2rQr3bF8nk\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said in 2015<\/a>, when he and Barry were inducted into the American Home Furnishings Hall of Fame, an organization based in High Point, N.C.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eliot Tatelman also applied his showman\u2019s instincts to Red Sox-themed promotions, including one in 2007 in which he promised that anyone who bought furniture during a roughly monthlong period would get that furniture free if the team won the World Series.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He made good on the promise when the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2007\/10\/29\/sports\/baseball\/29seriesy.html\" title=\"\">Sox swept the Colorado Rockies<\/a> to win the Series later that year. Mr. Tatelman said he paid out about $35 million to roughly 25,000 customers. (Insurance helped cover the losses.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s kind of the marketing genius behind what they did, in my opinion,\u201d Mr. Quintal said of the Tatelman brothers. \u201cThey always find a way to keep themselves ingrained in the local culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Jordan\u2019s also built good will through its charitable efforts, like <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2024\/06\/24\/business\/jordans-furniture-bike-giveaway\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">giving away bicycles<\/a> to 1,000 children at local Boys &amp; Girls Clubs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Berkshire Hathaway, the holding company controlled by the billionaire investor Warren E. Buffett, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/1999\/10\/12\/business\/berkshire-hathaway-buys-furniture-seller.html\" title=\"\">bought Jordan\u2019s in 1999<\/a>, but the Tatelman family still runs its day-to-day operations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even though he has retired, Eliot Tatelman said that he still plans to appear in Jordan\u2019s ads \u201cwith the concept of eventually fading me out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s something he clearly enjoys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s fun being recognized,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s fun being a semi-celebrity, even though I don\u2019t have any talent. I\u2019m a businessman and that\u2019s what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
