The Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbled 1,006 points, or 2.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite slid 3.1%.<\/p>\n<p>The indexes&#8217; free-fall Thursday was their biggest one-day drop since 2020, with more than $2 trillion in investor wealth erased from the S&amp;P 500. The S&amp;P 500 and Dow each sank more than 4% yesterday, while the tech-heavy Nasdaq plunged nearly 6%.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Drops of this magnitude aren&#8217;t unheard of on Wall Street, but they&#8217;re rare. Over the last 25 years, the S&amp;P 500 has fallen 4% in a single day 38 times, according to Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist for brokerage firm LPL Financial.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/world-reacts-to-trumps-mass-tariffs\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">World reacts to Trump&#8217;s mass tariffs<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">06:00<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Overseas markets also slid Friday. In overnight trading in Asia, Tokyo&#8217;s Nikkei 225 lost 2.8%, while South Korea&#8217;s Kospi sank 0.9%. In European trading, Germany&#8217;s DAX lost 2%, France&#8217;s CAC 40 in Paris dipped 1.6% and Britain&#8217;s FTSE 100 shed 1.7%.<\/p>\n<p>Economists have downgraded their outlook for U.S. economic growth this year as Mr. Trump has piled tariffs on a growing list of countries, warning that the levies are likely to boost inflation. That, in turn, could reduce consumer spending, which accounts for more than two-thirds of the nation&#8217;s economic activity.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Import taxes are largely borne by businesses, which typically pass along part or much of those added costs to consumers. As a result, Americans could <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/which-products-most-affected-tariffs\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">face higher prices<\/a><\/span> for electronics, household appliances, cars, clothing, furniture and food such as coffee and chocolate, according to economists.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Investors are also nervously watching as the barrage of U.S. tariffs prompts retaliation from key trading partners. China on Friday said it will impose a\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-china-retaliatory-34-percent-levy-us-imports-rare-earth-controls\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">34% tariff on imports<\/a><\/span>\u00a0of all U.S. products starting April 10.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The Chinese Commerce Ministry also said it would implement tighter restrictions on exports of rare earths \u2014materials used in products such as computer chips and electric vehicle batteries \u2014 as well impose 27 additional U.S. companies to trade sanctions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is an aggressive, escalatory response that makes a near-term deal to end the trade war between the two superpowers highly unlikely,&#8221; analysts with Capital Economics said in a research note.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/what-new-import-tariffs-could-mean-for-your-wallet-and-the-u-s-economy\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">What new import tariffs could mean for your wallet and the U.S. economy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">05:07<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In better news for financial markets, U.S. employers <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/jobs-report-today-march-2025-economy-tariffs-trump-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">added 228,000 jobs<\/a><\/span> in March, far exceeding analyst forecasts.
