For weeks leading up to the ruling, hundreds of thousands of people protesting for and against Mr. Yoon have lined the streets of Seoul, often enduring freezing temperatures, rain and snow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At 11 a.m. local time, Acting Chief Justice Moon Hyungbae began reading the ruling, which came after months of deliberation. Some 22 minutes later, he announced that all eight of the court\u2019s justices had voted to remove Mr. Yoon from office. The now ex-president had \u201cbetrayed the trust of the people\u201d and \u201cseverely violated the law,\u201d Mr. Moon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The court ruling is effective immediately and cannot be appealed. Mr. Yoon\u2019s People Power Party says it \u201chumbly\u201d accepted the Constitutional Court\u2019s ruling.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1a9d6366\">Why was Mr. Yoon impeached?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Late on Dec. 3, Mr. Yoon stunned the country when he declared martial law, but it lasted only six hours because lawmakers quickly voted to overturn it. Shortly after he made the announcement on live television, troops stormed the National Assembly building, with military leaders later testifying that they had been sent by the president to prevent lawmakers from being able to vote. Crowds of citizens confronted the troops, and some lawmakers scaled fences to get into the assembly and vote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Friday, Justice Moon said that Mr. Yoon\u2019s martial law decree did not meet the constitutional requirement for a national crisis, which Mr. Yoon repeatedly said was one of the reasons he had made the extraordinary declaration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Justice Moon said Mr. Yoon had failed in his duties as the nation\u2019s commander in chief and that his subsequent lifting of martial law did not lessen the degree of gravity. The impeachment case was procedurally sound, he said. Only six of the eight members on the bench needed to vote in favor to uphold the impeachment, but the decision was unanimous.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-746c5a3e\">What will happen next?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Acting president Han Duck-soo will continue in his role until the nation elects a new president through a snap election. This must take place within 60 days from Friday, meaning early June at the latest. The National Election Commission is expected to announce the date in the coming days.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Political parties will select their candidates through primary elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/10\/world\/asia\/south-korea-lee-jae-myung-martial-law.html\" title=\"\">Lee Jae-myung<\/a> is the expected front-runner to lead the opposition Democratic Party. He has been Mr. Yoon\u2019s political rival since the last presidential elections in 2022 when he lost to the former president by less than 1 percent of the votes. Mr. Lee has been at the helm of the political push to remove the now-impeached president.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s less clear who will come out in front of the race to lead the ruling People Power Party. Its former leader, Han Dong-hoon, resigned in December after disagreement with both Mr. Yoon and his party over the martial law issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Oh Se-hoon, the mayor of Seoul, and Hong Joon-pyo, the mayor of Daegu, are others who have been suggested as potential candidates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion
