From 1941 to 1945, she helped in the decryption of German messages, and also worked on Japanese signals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2015, Ms. Webb was appointed as Member of the Order of the British Empire and in 2021 she was awarded the L\u00e9gion d\u2019Honneur, France\u2019s most prestigious honor. She was one of the last surviving members of the storied Bletchley Park code breaking team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Webb was one of a handful of young women working at Bletchley, where mathematicians, cryptographers and code breakers endeavored to crack encrypted messages and gather information about the Axis powers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She had been studying domestic sciences at a local college, but as war swept across Europe, she dropped out. \u201cSeveral of us decided that we ought to be serving our country rather than just making sausage rolls,\u201d she recalled for an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bletchleypark.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/record_attachments\/2416.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">oral history<\/a> in 2012.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">With German submarines on the hunt for Allied vessels in the Atlantic Ocean, the work of the cryptologists at Bletchley Park was critical to Allied war effort. With the enemy messages decoded, Allied ships could change course and avoid peril. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like others working at the site, Ms. Webb, was bound by Britain\u2019s strict Official Secrets Act, meaning she could not share her work with family members, friends or even others working at Bletchley.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The level of secrecy was such, she said, that she knew only vaguely how her role fit into the greater scheme of intelligence gathering. She was unable to tie anything she saw to specific events during the war. It was not until much later that she understood her part in the bigger picture. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At war\u2019s end, she began looking for another job, but was hampered by her inability to tell employers just what she had been doing for the past few years. By a stroke of good fortune, one of the people she interviewed with was the headmaster of Ludlow Grammar School \u2014 a fellow Bletchley Park alum.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe gave me a job without questions,\u201d Ms. Webb said later. The two never spoke about the place, she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the mid-1970s, some of the work done at Bletchley Park began to be <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gale.com\/c\/declassified-documents-online-twentieth-century-british-intelligence-monitoring-world#:~:text=The%20top%2Dsecret%20work%20done,global%20events%20from%20intercepted%20decrypts.&amp;text=Declassified%20Documents%20Online:%20Twentieth%20Century,Staff%20and%20to%20other%20agencies.&amp;text=CAB%20182:%20Cabinet%20Office:%20Central,:%20Minutes%2C%20Memoranda%20and%20Papers.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">declassified<\/a>, but Ms. Webb said she did not talk about her experience until the 1990s, when she was asked if she could give talks. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI suddenly realized that, yes, I could, I\u2019m free, I don\u2019t have to worry any more,\u201d she said in the oral history. \u201cBut I was never able to tell my parents, as they died before 1975, and my husband wasn\u2019t particularly interested.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Over time, she increased her efforts to record for posterity the work done by the code breakers, publishing a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/No-More-Secrets-codebreaking-Bletchley\/dp\/1837700214\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">book<\/a>: \u201cNo More Secrets.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In it, Ms. Webb offered glimpses into her work and described her upbringing \u2014 including the time she spent in Nazi Germany as a child before the war broke out. She recounted a small act of defiance, in which, she said, she had refused to give a verbal Nazi salute beside her classmates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Charlotte Vine-Stevens was born on May 13, 1923, in Aston on Clun, in Shropshire. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1AYyFJryE2\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a tribute<\/a> on Tuesday, the Women\u2019s Royal Army Corps Association said, \u201cBetty inspired women in the Army for decades, and we will continue to take pride in her service during WWII and beyond, and as a champion of female veterans.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
