Gemelli in Rome, he was treated for pneumonia and other infections. He experienced two episodes \u2014 a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/22\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-critical-condition.html\" title=\"\">breathing crisis<\/a> and a bronchial spasm that caused him <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-health-setback-bronchial-spasm.html\" title=\"\">to inhale some vomit<\/a> \u2014 so severe that doctors said they did not think that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-doctor-interview.html?searchResultPosition=1\" title=\"\">he was going to make it<\/a>, but survived and was discharged on March 23 to convalesce at his Vatican guesthouse.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, the Vatican said that the pope\u2019s blood tests were normal and that a recent X-ray showed a \u201cslight improvement\u201d in his lungs. Francis still uses oxygen throughout the day but can go without that for brief periods, the Vatican said. Motor and respiratory therapy were also showing results, the Vatican added, saying that Francis\u2019 voice was improving and that he was moving with greater ease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Francis has not appeared in public since the day he left the hospital and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/23\/world\/europe\/pope-francis-rome.html\" title=\"\">briefly greeted<\/a> well-wishers from a balcony. That appearance offered a sobering glimpse of the toll that the health crisis had taken on the 88-year-old pontiff. His voice was weak, his breathing strained and he struggled to raise his hands to give a blessing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When the doctors discharged Francis, they implored him to rest and convalesce for at least two months. So far, it appears he has largely heeded their pleas.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Vatican said on Tuesday that Francis had not had any visitors since returning to the guesthouse but celebrates Mass with other priests every morning and spends part of the day seated at his desk working.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the past week, Francis has approved the canonization of Venezuela\u2019s first female saint and the first saint for Papua New Guinea, where he traveled last September on a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/09\/13\/world\/asia\/francis-pope-asia-trip.html\" title=\"\">grueling trip to the Asia-Pacific region<\/a>. He also has appointed several bishops and offered prayers for the victims of the powerful <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/28\/world\/asia\/earthquake-myanmar-thailand-death-toll.html\" title=\"\">earthquake in Southeast Asia<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And he has mused on his condition. In his traditional Angelus prayer and blessing on Sunday \u2014 a written message in place of his typical delivery overlooking St. Peter\u2019s Square \u2014 Francis urged the faithful to experience the Lenten period leading to Easter \u201cas a period of healing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI too am experiencing it this way, in my soul and in my body,\u201d Francis said in written text published on the Vatican website.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
