Presented before a live crowd, it is also simultaneously livestreamed on the app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In Wednesday\u2019s show, Orwin performed tasks inspired by what she has seen on TikTok Live: eating in front of the camera, running on a treadmill, drinking from a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/05\/17\/style\/stanley-tumbler.html\" title=\"\">Stanley Tumbler<\/a> and performing TikTok dances, all while describing her career in performance art.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Whether Orwin\u2019s antics would be witnessed by audiences beyond SoHo Playhouse, where \u201cFamehungry\u201d is running until Feb. 8 after success at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, was an open question this weekend as the app was briefly banned in the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe jeopardy in terms of the practicalities of the show isn\u2019t great, but also the sense of political jeopardy around the ban is really interesting for the work as well,\u201d Orwin said. \u201cIt\u2019s a strange situation to be in.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Congress passed legislation last year to ban TikTok unless it was sold to a government-approved buyer, citing concerns that the Chinese government could gain access to sensitive user data and manipulate content on the app, which is owned by the Chinese company ByteDance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the Supreme Court upheld the law last week, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/18\/technology\/tiktok-ban.html\" title=\"\">TikTok briefly went dark<\/a> before flickering back to life for many users when the incoming president, Donald J. Trump, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/19\/technology\/trump-tiktok-ban-executive-order.html\" title=\"\">indicated support for the app<\/a>. (After Trump\u2019s inauguration on Monday, he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/20\/technology\/trump-tiktok-ban-delay-executive-order.html\" title=\"\">signed an executive order<\/a> stalling the ban for 75 days.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For many, what ultimately was an interruption in service <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/19\/style\/tiktok-reaction.html\" title=\"\">became a joke<\/a>. But the app\u2019s legal status is murky, and Orwin is one of the users who still does not have access to TikTok. The production managed a workaround <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/10\/technology\/tiktok-ban-app-users.html\" title=\"\">with a VPN service<\/a>, but livestream commenters noted that the stream was laggy at times.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The premise of \u201cFamehungry\u201d \u2014 Orwin is mentored by a TikTok user who acts as a guide to the app\u2019s frenetic universe \u2014 also offers a quick history of the show\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2020, Orwin was working in a youth theater therapy project when she met <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@jaxvalentine_?lang=en\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Jax Valentine<\/a>, who was 15 and had about 30,000 TikTok followers \u2014 no guarantee of celebrity on an app driven by trends spread across many accounts. But for Orwin, an artist who saw opportunities <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/07\/01\/theater\/britain-arts-future-coronavirus.html\" title=\"\">dry up during the coronavirus pandemic<\/a>, 30,000 people watching your work was unbelievable.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">\u201c<\/em>I\u2019d lost all my audiences,\u201d she said. \u201cI\u2019d lost basically all of my income. And here was a 15-year-old who had access to a following and was making money off the app.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That got Orwin thinking about developing a show around TikTok. Valentine, who is now 21 with 80,000 TikTok followers, calls into the theater virtually, from their bedroom in Sheffield, England, and coaches Orwin on how to be successful on the app.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A projected screen behind Orwin shows the TikTok livestream, with live commentary from online users, as well as writing that only the in-house audience can see. As Orwin giggles repeatedly into the cellphone camera, text that she wrote flashes on the screen: \u201cThis makes me want to rip my eyeballs out.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">One aspect of Orwin\u2019s performance is whether TikTok will turn off her livestream for violating community guidelines. In Wednesday\u2019s show, two of her accounts were shut down for sexual content because of an onscreen cucumber and, later, a vaguely phallic lollipop. Orwin switched to backup accounts in real time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt\u2019s interesting who gets to censor and who doesn\u2019t get censored,\u201d said Vania Myers, who watched the show on opening night.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The \u201csomething amazing\u201d that Orwin promised \u2014 she follows through whether or not the livestream reaches 20,000 likes \u2014 involves a song and a final debasing act. As the audience responds, frequently with laughter or applause, the projection of Valentine on the wall silently glares at the crowd.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though the show points out many of TikTok\u2019s pitfalls, Orwin and Valentine emphasized that there is not an easy moral judgment to make about a platform with both tangible benefits and real drawbacks. For Valentine, the app has been a tool for building self-esteem, but also a place where they saw their \u201cthirst traps\u201d perform better when they were not yet an adult.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe don\u2019t want anyone to just leave the show and go home and say, \u2018TikTok is awful,\u2019\u201d Valentine said. \u201cWe want people to leave it and say, \u2018OK, that\u2019s rough. What\u2019s the nuance surrounding it?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By the time of the finale on Wednesday, Orwin\u2019s performance had received more than 8,000 likes on TikTok. But because the show had been kicked off two accounts, its online audience had dwindled.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI hope the three people watching on TikTok really liked that,\u201d Orwin said in the final moments.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Onscreen, user3361307021887 commented back: \u201cLoved it.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"
