Gavin Newsom of California said on Friday that the Democratic brand was \u201ctoxic\u201d and that his party had to admit its own mistakes, delivering tough love as Democrats struggle in their fight against the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom, once considered a liberal combatant, has embarked on a political soul search in the months since President Trump won the White House and Republicans won both houses of Congress. On Friday, he used his strongest language yet to criticize his own party during an appearance on \u201cReal Time With Bill Maher.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe Democratic brand is toxic right now,\u201d he said, pointing to a recent NBC News <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/politics-news\/democratic-party-hits-new-polling-low-voters-want-fight-trump-harder-rcna196161\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">poll<\/a> that showed Democrats with a 27 percent favorability rating, the lowest in at least a generation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom, a possible 2028 presidential candidate, blamed his fellow Democrats for his party\u2019s woes. He criticized Democrats for being judgmental, staying in an echo chamber and resorting to \u201ccancel culture\u201d to ostracize people whose views they find abhorrent.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe talk down to people,\u201d he said. \u201cWe talk past people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The governor found in Mr. Maher a sympathetic figure who for decades has questioned Democratic orthodoxy despite his liberal leanings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom this month launched a new podcast, \u201cThis Is Gavin Newsom,\u201d on which he has interviewed guests from across the political spectrum to discuss, in part, what went wrong for Democrats in the 2024 elections. Early episodes featured conversations with Charlie Kirk, who leads the youth organization Turning Point USA, and Steve Bannon, an architect of President Trump\u2019s \u201cMake America Great Again\u201d movement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Those guests in particular drew fierce criticism from Mr. Newsom\u2019s liberal allies, who accused the governor of legitimizing right-wing views and failing to correct inaccuracies expressed by his guests.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis idea that we can\u2019t even have a conversation with the other side?\u201d Mr. Newsom said with incredulity Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou have to. They won,\u201d Mr. Maher replied.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Democrats have split over how best to confront the Trump administration and Republicans in Congress, most notably this month when Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the minority leader, delivered the votes to avoid a government shutdown. Mr. Schumer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/chuck-schumer-senate-budget-vote-backlash.html\" title=\"\">defended his decision<\/a> as a responsible, if unpopular, choice. But many Democrats saw it as a sign that their party was weak.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Internally, Democrats are still trying to figure out what went wrong last year and how they can retake Congress in 2026.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom hosted Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota, the Democratic vice-presidential candidate last year, for a conversation released last week about \u201cwhere the hell our party is right now,\u201d as Mr. Newsom put it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is an existential moment, and our unity against Trump is not increasing our trust, it\u2019s not helping the Democratic brand,\u201d Mr. Newsom told Mr. Walz.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Senator John Fetterman, Democrat of Pennsylvania, also criticized his party on Friday, saying in an interview <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2025\/03\/28\/2024-election-democrats-kamala-harris-00230631\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">with Politico<\/a> that the party would be in a \u201cpermanent minority\u201d if it did not get its act together.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Friday, Mr. Newsom told Mr. Maher: \u201cWe need to own our mistakes. We need to own what\u2019s wrong with our party.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom\u2019s comments were reminiscent of the time that former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/politics\/article\/we-re-dying-at-the-box-office-schwarzenegger-2505307.php\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told his own California Republican Party<\/a> members in 2007 that they were \u201cdying at the box office.\u201d Nearly two decades ago, Mr. Schwarzenegger urged his conservative base to move toward the center to gain relevance in California, at a time when Democrats controlled the legislature and nearly all statewide offices there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">California Republicans for the most part ignored the advice, lost even more seats and have never won statewide office since then. State party activists have taken comfort in the national success of Republicans, who have shifted rightward and made gains elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Saturday, Representative Ro Khanna, another California Democrat who <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/us\/politics\/ro-khanna-jd-vance-2028.html\" title=\"\">may run for president<\/a> in 2028, issued a rebuttal to Mr. Newsom and said the Democratic Party was \u201cnot \u2018toxic.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is not the time to join the chorus in bashing our party,\u201d Mr. Khanna <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RoKhanna\/status\/1906025826296197448\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">said on X<\/a>. \u201cThe rage should be about what Trump is doing TODAY. Let\u2019s share what our party has done &amp; offer a forward vision for the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom surprised Democrats this month when he said on his podcast that it was \u201cdeeply unfair\u201d for transgender athletes to play in female sports. He reiterated that stance on Friday night, to the approval of Mr. Maher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The host, however, pressed Mr. Newsom on a California state law that prohibits school districts from requiring teachers to tell parents when a student asks to change their gender identity at school. The Trump administration <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/us\/trump-california-transgender-parental-notification.html\" title=\"\">asserted<\/a> on Thursday that California\u2019s law violated federal law, and Mr. Maher has taken the position that parents should be informed when their children seek an identity change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Newsom defended the law as sound policy, saying that California simply wanted to protect teachers who \u201cdid not report or snitch on a kid talking about their gender identity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat is the job of a teacher? It\u2019s to teach,\u201d Mr. Newsom said. \u201cI just think that was fair.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Maher has repeatedly expressed his desire to see Mr. Newsom run for president. On Friday, he put the question to his guest: \u201cAre you going to do it or not?
