Michael Waltz, the national security adviser who added Mr. Goldberg to the chat, said he took \u201cfull responsibility\u201d for the leak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Several Democrats called for Mr. Hegseth to step down. But the Trump administration <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/26\/us\/politics\/signal-chat-military-plan-leak-trump.html\" title=\"\">has tried to divert or sidestep the issues<\/a>. (Mr. Trump said the scandal was a \u201cwitch hunt.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As part of a regular check-in over the course of Mr. Trump\u2019s first 100 days back in office, The New York Times asked five voters what they thought of the administration\u2019s response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dave Abdallah wasn\u2019t happy with the way Mr. Trump and those around him kept downplaying the Signal chat security breach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They \u201care totally wrong,\u201d Mr. Adballah said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The breach, he added, could have cost U.S. soldiers their lives. \u201cThis is a serious, serious mistake,\u201d he said of the entire affair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Abdallah, a real estate broker who immigrated to the United States from Lebanon as a child, voted for the Green Party candidate Jill Stein in the 2024 election. It was a protest over the Biden administration\u2019s handling of the war in Gaza and concerns that Mr. Trump would not help the situation. Still, Mr. Abdallah hoped Mr. Trump\u2019s foreign policy might bring peace and stability to the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">So far, he has been disappointed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Fighting recently resumed between Israel and Hamas. Now, Mr. Abdallah believes that Mr. Trump, his administration and backers are proving to be hypocritical as they face backlash for the Signal affair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He recalled seeing a recent TikTok video that showed old clips of Republicans criticizing Hillary Clinton for using a private computer server when she was the secretary of state during the Obama administration. The video then showed images of the same critics, now backers of Mr. Trump, shrugging off the Signal chat as no big deal and making excuses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Such excuses struck Mr. Abdallah as insincere. \u201cI just can\u2019t comprehend it,\u201d he said of the Signal chat. \u201cSo it definitely should be on the table to get rid of somebody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Kurt Streeter<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-1e160bf4\">\u2018I don\u2019t think anybody should be fired over this because it\u2019s not as serious as a lot of people think.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-554e88c1\"><span>Perry Hunter, 55, from Sellersburg, Ind.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Perry Hunter first heard that Trump officials accidentally included a journalist in the Signal chat, he thought it was a significant error by the administration and that there needed to be consequences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But, just as he had done in response to many Trump-related news events since the inauguration, Mr. Hunter said he took time to learn the details before deciding what he thought of the situation. This time, he ended up thinking that the scandal was not much of a scandal at all, saying that the chat included <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/26\/us\/politics\/hegseth-signal-war-plan-leak-white-house.html\" title=\"\">no specific war plans, echoing the White House\u2019s description<\/a>. That rendered the messages benign to his eye. (Defense experts have been shocked by the level of detail in the chat.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cSomebody made a mistake, for sure,\u201d he said, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t think anybody should be fired over this because it\u2019s not as serious as a lot of people think that it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Hunter, a high school teacher, would have thought differently, he said, if Americans had been killed because of information shared in the chat. In that case, he said, \u201cthen, yes, somebody should lose their job and somebody should go to jail.\u201d He added, \u201cI think it\u2019s one of those things that they got lucky and they better learn from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hearing Democrats criticize the administration over the breach, he said it was hypocritical of them to be so upset. He compared the breach to mistakes made by officials involved in the Biden administration\u2019s withdrawal from Afghanistan, or in Mrs. Clinton\u2019s use of a private email server for official communications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNo one that we know of was held accountable in those situations,\u201d Mr. Hunter said. \u201cAnd there was failure, big-time failure, in all of those situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Juliet Macur<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<p><h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-54ff631a\">\u2018If it happens again, even in one or two or three years, then no one learned anything.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-26f5c843\"><span>Tali Jackont, 57, from Los Angeles<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/p>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI have to tell you, I was in shock,\u201d said Tali Jackont, an educator. \u201cThere is stuff that cannot happen, and it happened.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ms. Jackont compared it with how closely military secrets are kept in Israel, her home country. When Mossad, the Israeli intelligence service, conducts an operation, no one claims responsibility even if it seems obvious, she said. \u201cNo one will tell you, until they tell you,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She was not eager for anyone involved to be fired at this point, \u201cbut there has to be better attention,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Has the administration learned its lesson? \u201cTime will tell,\u201d Ms. Jackont said. For now it looked as though they were mostly brushing this under the rug, she said, but mused about what conversations might be going on behind closed doors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIf it happens again, even in one or two or three years, then no one learned anything,\u201d she said. \u201cAnd it will be, I don\u2019t want to use the word disaster, but a big shame.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Campbell Robertson<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-29d51719\">\u2018Imagine somebody from another country with malicious intentions, they take that information and hurt us and our military.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-1b125f5b\"><span>Jaime Escobar Jr., 46, from Roma, Texas<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-9\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As the mayor of a small border town, Jaime Escobar Jr., knew how important it was to protect sensitive government information. So when he read the news about the Signal chat, he worried that the officials in question were trying to brush off the matter too quickly.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat\u2019s just very, it\u2019s a hard pill to swallow,\u201d he said of the issue. \u201cThere has to be a strong message. We can\u2019t allow this to happen. Imagine somebody from another country with malicious intentions, they take that information and hurt us and our military.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Escobar, who voted for Mr. Trump after years as a Democrat, remained troubled that the officials failed to check something as simple as who was receiving the information, like a journalist.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-10\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat is a big mistake, and they just have to be extra careful about it,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s a lesson that needs to be learned very quickly and just cannot be repeated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At the same time, he felt satisfied that Mr. Waltz, who admitted to creating the group chat, accepted responsibility.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cHe took it on, whether it was his fault or not, he\u2019s like, \u2018Well, I\u2019m the guy in charge of national security,\u2019\u201d he said. As for further consequences? \u201cWell, that\u2019s going to have to be up to the president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Edgar Sandoval<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-13o6u42 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-11a00895\">\u2018The left hasn\u2019t had much to fight with or defend themselves with. It would seem like this could give them a foothold.\u2019<\/h2>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-6181142f\"><span>Isaiah Thompson, 22, from Washington, D.C.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-11\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When Isaiah Thompson learned that Trump senior officials shared sensitive war details on Signal, he immediately wondered how any member of the federal government could make such a mistake. Then he wondered how Democrats \u2014 rather than Republicans \u2014 would react.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-12\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe left hasn\u2019t had much to fight with or defend themselves with. It would seem like this could give them a foothold or something to push back on,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know how the federal government could have gotten something like this so wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Thompson, a college student who voted for Kamala Harris but supports the Green Party, said the Signal chat was just another example of the lack of accountability or checks and balances in the Trump administration. Still, he hesitates to support the firing of Mr. Hegseth or Mr. Waltz over their roles in the Signal scandal \u2014 at least not yet.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere needs to be a deep investigation before anybody is fired or asked to resign,\u201d said Mr. Thompson. \u201cBut the president is not treating this seriously enough. This was a national security breach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-798hid etfikam0\">\u2014 <!-- -->Audra D. S.
