He added that if gas and oil pipelines get \u201cblown up,\u201d coal could be used as a backup energy source.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have more coal than anybody,\u201d Mr. Trump said. \u201cWe have more oil and gas than anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the United States is the world\u2019s largest producer of oil and natural gas, and while it has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/international\/rankings\/world?pa=264&amp;u=0&amp;f=A&amp;v=none&amp;y=01%2F01%2F2023&amp;ev=fals\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more coal reserves<\/a> than any other country, it\u2019s only the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/reports\/coal-mid-year-update-july-2024\/overview\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">fourth-largest producer<\/a> of coal, behind China, India and Indonesia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But reliance on fossil fuels like coal made the United States one of the largest emitters of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and methane, which have irreversibly heated the planet and driven global climate change.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Despite Mr. Trump\u2019s talk about building coal plants, the United States has drastically reduced its coal generating capacity in recent years. Most of the decline came because natural gas, and now renewables like solar and wind, were cheaper sources of energy. A 2023 study showed that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/energyinnovation.org\/report\/the-coal-cost-crossover-3-0\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">99 percent of U.S. coal plants<\/a> were more expensive to run than renewable replacements.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By 2023, the 206 coal plants remaining in the United States supplied <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/electricity\/electricity-in-the-us.php#:~:text=Fossil%20fuels%20accounted%20for%20about,and%20other%20miscellaneous%20energy%20sources.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">roughly 16 percent of the nation\u2019s electricity<\/a>, far below natural gas and less than both renewables and nuclear power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Almost a quarter of current coal generation is slated for retirement by 2040, according to data compiled by the Energy Information Administration in October 2024. Those reductions cross 51 coal plants.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The pace of those retirements <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.php?id=61425\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">slowed last year<\/a> while energy demand increased. Utilities predict a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/rmi.org\/the-state-of-utility-planning-2024-q4\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">20 percent increase in demand<\/a> for electricity by 2035, according to data compiled by RMI, a nonprofit group focused on energy research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Experts said that the rise in electricity use was expected under a clean energy transition and that coal generation wouldn\u2019t be required to meet it.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cUtilities are skipping a step and asking everyone to take it as a foregone conclusion that if there\u2019s demand growth from manufacturing, onshoring, and data centers or A.I., then it has to be met with coal, when in fact it\u2019s one of the most expensive resources left for them to operate,\u201d said David Pomerantz, the executive director of the Energy and Policy Institute, a research and advocacy group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But industry groups said that under Mr. Trump, it might be possible to increase coal exports and build smaller coal plants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s a sense of optimism with the new administration,\u201d said Emily Arthun, chief executive of the American Coal Council.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the coal industry could experience a small bump under Mr. Trump, experts said coal was simply too expensive to make a comeback.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cCoal is fundamentally uneconomic,\u201d said Sean O\u2019Leary, senior researcher at the Ohio River Valley Institute, an energy think tank. \u201cAny need that isn\u2019t met by wind or solar or battery storage will for the most part be met with natural gas, and coal will still be a distant fourth resource in that mix.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Trump administration\u2019s unwavering commitment to fossil fuels <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/climate\/trump-global-energy-transition.html\" title=\"\">could hinder the country\u2019s competitiveness<\/a> in the energy transition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">China dominates the United States in virtually every aspect of clean energy, and fossil fuel generation has reached a historic low in the European Union. Last year, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ember-energy.org\/latest-updates\/solar-overtakes-coal-in-eu-power-sector-as-gas-declines-for-the-fifth-year-in-a-row\/?utm_source=hs_email&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=heatmap_am&amp;utm_content=343820739\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">solar overtook coal for the first time<\/a>, and wind overtook both coal and gas, according to a new report by Ember, an energy think
