{"id":15721,"date":"2025-03-27T14:29:52","date_gmt":"2025-03-27T14:29:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/ro-khanna-wants-to-take-on-jd-vance\/"},"modified":"2025-03-27T14:29:52","modified_gmt":"2025-03-27T14:29:52","slug":"ro-khanna-wants-to-take-on-jd-vance","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/site.itshrt.com\/worldnews\/ro-khanna-wants-to-take-on-jd-vance\/","title":{"rendered":"Ro Khanna Wants to Take On JD Vance"},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Representative Ro Khanna, Democrat of California, has been busy in the early months of 2025 trying out ways to make himself a counterweight to the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a social-media skirmish in February over the administration\u2019s hiring and firing of an official who had written racist posts, Mr. Khanna drew the ire of Vice President JD Vance, who told him, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JDVance\/status\/1887960225195638848\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cYou disgust me.\u201d<\/a> More recently, Mr. Khanna has been staging <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/ro-khanna-town-halls-20226535.php\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">town halls<\/a> in Republican districts across California with a parade of progressive co-sponsors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, he is planning to shine an even brighter spotlight on Mr. Vance \u2014 and on himself \u2014 with speeches aimed directly at the vice president in April in Ohio, Mr. Vance\u2019s home state, and at their shared alma mater, Yale Law School.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an interview, Mr. Khanna, 48, said he intended to cast Mr. Vance as a unique threat to America\u2019s constitutional order, and argued that there was no time to waste in building the case against Mr. Vance, a likely heir to President Trump\u2019s right-wing political movement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">His speaking tour of several cities in Ohio, and on Yale\u2019s campus in New Haven, Conn., is also an effort to nudge himself into the national conversation about the Democratic Party\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For Mr. Khanna, who has represented much of Silicon Valley since unseating a Democratic incumbent in 2016, that has been a long-term project. He makes a cascade of cable news appearances and travels widely; his repeated trips to New Hampshire before the 2024 election included appearances as a surrogate for former President Joseph R. Biden Jr. and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/11\/01\/us\/politics\/vivek-ramaswamy-ro-khanna-debate.html\" title=\"\">an unusual debate with Vivek Ramaswamy<\/a>. At last year\u2019s Democratic convention, he arranged to meet with <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/08\/21\/us\/politics\/ro-khanna-dnc.html\" title=\"\">delegates from 15 states<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI don\u2019t deny having ambition,\u201d Mr. Khanna said. \u201cAmbition is a good thing if it\u2019s used towards good ends. And I want to be in a place where I can have, ultimately, the maximum impact on our country and our party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For now, he said, fending off the Trump agenda was most important. \u201cDoing that, I think, is sort of table stakes for people who want to then have their positive vision heard,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Our conversation was edited for length and clarity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">SG: JD Vance isn\u2019t the president. Donald Trump is doing all the things right now. So why talk about JD Vance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">RK: Well, he\u2019s the one who\u2019s trying to give intellectual justification for what Trump is doing. He\u2019s the quote-unquote intellectual of Trumpism. So I think we have to take on the ideology. Because he\u2019s trying to say that what Trump is doing is a coherent worldview.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">You don\u2019t think it\u2019s too early to try to define JD Vance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No. He represents the future of Trumpism. And I think all of our party should be exposing him and defining him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Do you think it\u2019s too early to be fighting the future of Trumpism given all the things happening in the present? Is it too soon to start talking about 2028?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It is too soon to be talking about 2028. But what JD Vance is articulating today is a potential crisis in the next few months. And <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/09\/us\/politics\/vance-trump-federal-courts-executive-order.html\" title=\"\">he\u2019s saying<\/a> to Trump, \u2018Defy the court orders, defy including the Supreme Court.\u2019 I mean, that\u2019s not 2028. That\u2019s telling you about a potential constitutional crisis.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He\u2019s saying, the universities are the enemy. That\u2019s not talking about 2028. That\u2019s talking about threatening our universities \u2014 the crown jewels, in many ways, of American democracy. So we need to draw the line in the sand now. We need to expose how hollow this is. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">JD Vance, the student at Yale, would have recognized how hollow it is. And so, that\u2019s partly why I\u2019m going back there, where both of us got an education.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Can this be seen as a bid for attention? And do you think that\u2019s a good thing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Sure, it\u2019s a bid for attention. It\u2019s trying to push back on Vance\u2019s ideology and trying to get my ideas out there. And 2024 taught us that we have to be creative in capturing people\u2019s attention. If I had just written a Foreign Policy magazine essay on the same ideas, that probably wouldn\u2019t really get people talking about them. I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a bad thing to try to get attention. But the question is attention for what? My hope is that I\u2019m trying to get attention for something substantive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">You\u2019ve actually traveled with Vance before, in early 2018, on a bus tour across Ohio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He joined us for a day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">The Times called it a <\/strong><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/03\/04\/technology\/silicon-valley-midwest.html\" title=\"\">\u201cRust Belt safari.\u201d<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I remember that because I didn\u2019t love the title.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Did you forge a real relationship with Vance?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I remember it being a cordial conversation about what it would really take to reindustrialize the country. But I don\u2019t recognize the JD Vance who joined us on that trip, in terms of the things he\u2019s now talking about. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I don\u2019t think <em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">that<\/em> JD Vance would ever have talked about defying the Supreme Court, or called universities the enemy. I mean, it was filled with people who had collaborated at universities and appreciated the role of universities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">I\u2019m curious if you thought back then that the Democratic Party\u2019s brand was as broken with working people as you seem to think it is today?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We had a problem back then. We have a problem today. But I don\u2019t think it\u2019s just the Democratic Party\u2019s brand. The Republican brand isn\u2019t that much better. I think people keep voting everyone out of office because they think no one is fundamentally transforming their lives. They see economic stagnation in their communities while wealth piles up in places like my district.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Have you ever seen Democratic voters as angry as they are right now?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No, but that\u2019s a separate issue. There\u2019s two levels of anger. There\u2019s anger generally of voters upset with the economic direction of this country. And I would argue they\u2019ve been upset for the last 20 years, trying to vote for change.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then there is particular anger today among Democrats. They\u2019re angry that they don\u2019t see the Democratic Party providing clear direction of what they can be doing in this moment. And they don\u2019t see us rising up strongly enough to confront the crisis. They don\u2019t see us having a clear vision of standing with the working class and middle class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">I watched part of one of your town halls that was in your district. One of the people that stuck out to me said, \u2018Why are you acting like things are normal?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I remember that question.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Should Democratic incumbents be worried right now about these sort of burbling up frustrations?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yes, they should. They were very, very angry at <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/us\/government-shutdown-senate-democrats.html\" title=\"\">the Senate vote<\/a>, that we didn\u2019t get any concessions. But it\u2019s beyond that. They want to see Democratic members of Congress doing everything humanly possible to avoid cuts that they think are life-or-death for their families. The amount of people at these panels who came to me in tears, crying, just seeking to be hugged and listened to \u2014 I was shocked.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">People are not typically coming up in tears?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That has never happened to me before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">You know better than most the challenges of running a primary campaign against an incumbent member of Congress.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I tried it three times. It worked once.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Are you considering backing any primary challengers in this cycle against any of your colleagues?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I believe primary challenges are healthy and it would be hypocritical for me to say that they\u2019re not. I believe people should run and we\u2019re not entitled to these seats. I personally have seldom endorsed primary challengers, but I have in certain cases. With <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/462024-khanna-calls-out-progressives-who-havent-endorsed-lipinski-challenger\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Marie Newman<\/a>. With Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, I famously <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2018\/06\/13\/ro-khanna-joe-crowley-alexandria-ocasio-cortez\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">dual-endorsed<\/a>. I never rule it out.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">There\u2019s a tension in your biography. You represent Silicon Valley and have had the backing of some of its biggest names. You also co-chaired Bernie Sanders\u2019s 2020 presidential campaign. Are you more of a Bernie Sanders-style democratic socialist or are you a Silicon Valley capitalist?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I wrote a whole book called \u201cProgressive Capitalism\u201d trying to reconcile it \u2014 maybe not well! But I call myself a pro-growth progressive. The fundamental challenge in this country should be tackling income inequality. To tackle inequality in Milwaukee or Johnstown, Pa., you need government, but you also need business leaders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">I believe we need to have higher taxes on the wealthy in my district. We also have to have economic dynamism, economic growth in these areas, and business leaders, technology leaders, have to be part of the solution.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">It sounds like the beginnings of a platform of a candidate for president.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If someone else wants to take it, that is fine. It\u2019s a philosophy. The question is, can I get this philosophy \u2014 which I fundamentally believe is what the country needs to do \u2014 can I get our party to adopt it?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Have you ruled out running for president in 2028?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No one rules out anything. I\u2019m of Hindu faith. And one of the great teachings of the Gita is if you do your duty without worrying about the reward, you\u2019re more likely to get rewards.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"
