Kennedy Jr. has often criticized prescription stimulants, such as Adderall, that are primarily used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe have damaged this entire generation,\u201d he said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=bm3uOuz9_9o\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">last year<\/a> during a podcast, referring to the number of children taking psychiatric medications. \u201cWe have poisoned them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In February, the \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2025\/02\/establishing-the-presidents-make-america-healthy-again-commission\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Make America Healthy Again\u201d commission<\/a>, led by Mr. Kennedy, announced plans to evaluate the \u201cthreat\u201d posed by drugs like prescription stimulants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But are they a threat? And if so, to whom?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Like many medications, prescription stimulants have potential side effects, and there are people who misuse them. Yet these drugs are also considered some of the most effective and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S014976342100049X?via%3Dihub\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">well-researched<\/a> treatments that psychiatry has to offer, said Dr. Jeffrey H. Newcorn, the director of the Division of A.D.H.D. and Learning Disorders at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Here are some answers to common questions and concerns about stimulants.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-51427ebb\">What are prescription stimulants?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Prescription stimulants are drugs that help change the way the brain works by increasing the communication among neurons.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They are divided into two classes: methylphenidates (like Ritalin, Focalin and Concerta) and amphetamines (like Vyvanse and Adderall).<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The drugs are most often prescribed to treat A.D.H.D., but they\u2019re also used for conditions like narcolepsy or a binge eating disorder. Sometimes they are also used off-label, for treatment-resistant depression, or catatonia, a syndrome that can cause a patient to move in unusual ways, become immobile or stop talking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The medications work by amplifying the activity of the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine in the nerve cells of the brain. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/06\/30\/well\/mind\/dopamine-brain-behavior.html\" title=\"\">Dopamine<\/a> plays a role in creating the desire for something and the motivation to get it, while norepinephrine can increase alertness and make it easier to focus.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People with A.D.H.D. may have a deficit of both of these chemicals, so when they use stimulants it essentially helps \u201ceven them out,\u201d said Dr. Anthony L. Rostain, chairman of the department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health at Cooper University Health Care, which is based in Camden, N.J.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For some users, the effects are profound. \u201cIt\u2019s like glasses for poor vision,\u201d Dr. Rostain said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-632297f7\">Are stimulants always used to treat A.D.H.D.?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">No.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Not everyone who has been diagnosed with A.D.H.D. takes stimulants. There are also non-stimulant medications, like Strattera (atomoxetine). And some people don\u2019t require any medication at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other interventions, such as behavioral therapy, parent training, school supports, and lifestyle changes to regulate sleep and exercise, are important \u2014 regardless of whether someone needs medication or not.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-6aa31b1e\">How many people are taking them?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The use of prescription stimulants <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov\/pubs\/docs\/IQVIA_Report_on_Stimulant_Trends_from_2012-2021.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">has been on the rise<\/a> since 2012, particularly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/11\/well\/mind\/adhd-diagnosis-older-middle-age.html\" title=\"\">among adults<\/a>, and has <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamapsychiatry\/fullarticle\/2813980\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">sharply increased<\/a> in recent years among women as well as patients ages 20 to 39.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2023, an estimated 6 percent of adults had a current diagnosis of A.D.H.D. and about one-third of those patients reported taking prescription stimulant medication, according to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/73\/wr\/mm7340a1.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">an analysis<\/a> from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In children and adolescents, however, the number of stimulant prescriptions has been <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/mmwr\/volumes\/72\/wr\/mm7213a1.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">more stable<\/a> in recent decades.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Overall, it is estimated that about <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/publications.aap.org\/pediatrics\/article\/152\/4\/e2023061942\/193956\/Pediatric-ADHD-Medication-Errors-Reported-to?autologincheck=redirected\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">5 percent of children<\/a> in the U.S. are currently prescribed medication for A.D.H.D. (Not 15 percent, the number <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/01\/29\/us\/rfk-jr-health-senate-hearing\/kennedy-says-too-many-children-take-adhd-medications-while-inflating-his-figures?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">stated by Mr. Kennedy<\/a> during his confirmation hearing in January.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A study <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39864457\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published in February<\/a> found that prescriptions actually <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/39864457\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">declined among children<\/a> after the pandemic began.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-252feadc\">How often are prescription stimulants misused?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Government drug use surveys show that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.samhsa.gov\/data\/sites\/default\/files\/reports\/rpt42731\/2022-nsduh-nnr.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">in 2022<\/a>, among people 12 and older, 1.5 percent reported misusing prescription stimulants in the past year \u2014 taking the drugs without a doctor telling them to do so, or not in the manner they were prescribed. Sometimes people are aspiring to be more productive or to stay awake, but the drugs are also used recreationally, and can produce a high by swallowing, smoking or snorting the medication \u2014 or injecting it into the bloodstream.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Young adults ages 18 to 25 had the highest rates of misuse: 3.7 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Among adolescents 12 to 17, the percentage of misuse was much smaller: 0.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This number can vary depending on where they live: In some U.S. schools, as many as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jamanetworkopen\/fullarticle\/2803941\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">1 in 4 high school students<\/a> report misusing prescription stimulants, often motivated by their desire to perform better in school. Some schools report no issue with stimulant misuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-189658e5\">What are the potential side effects?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Taking stimulants can cause elevated blood pressure and heart rate, a reduced appetite, difficulty sleeping, and restlessness or agitation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other common side effects include headaches, an increase in body temperature and abdominal pain.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Less frequently, stimulants have been known to temporarily slow a child\u2019s <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0149763420305923\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">growth<\/a>, Dr. Rostain said, which is why they should have their height and weight monitored by a medical provider while they\u2019re taking the drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There is also a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/psychiatryonline.org\/doi\/10.1176\/appi.ajp.20230329\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">small risk of developing psychosis<\/a> that may be tied to dosage. And when <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/nida.nih.gov\/research-topics\/parents-educators\/mind-matter-series\/prescription-stimulants\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">stimulants are misused<\/a>, they can be addictive.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Patients and their doctors have to weigh the benefits of taking stimulants against these risks. A.D.H.D., particularly when left untreated, is associated with reckless behaviors like careless driving, unsafe sex, substance abuse and aggression. A <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/health\/adhd-life-expectancy.html\" title=\"\">recent study<\/a> showed that people with the diagnosis are, on average, dying earlier than their peers \u2014 about seven years earlier for men, and about nine for women.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-ecab39f\">How long should stimulants be used?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It depends.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36484846\/https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/34384227\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Studies have shown<\/a> that A.D.H.D. symptoms <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/bmcpsychiatry.biomedcentral.com\/articles\/10.1186\/s12888-023-04713-z\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">can change over time<\/a>, improving and then worsening again, or vice versa. \u201cIt\u2019s not consistent,\u201d Dr. Rostain said. \u201cThey wax and wane for many people.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As a result, he added, people may end up using A.D.H.D. medications intermittently.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, some people take these drugs longer term, said Dr. Lenard A. Adler, the director of NYU Langone Health\u2019s Adult A.D.H.D. Program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThat being said, it\u2019s always appropriate when someone is stable on psychostimulants to attempt to lower the dose,\u201d Dr. Adler added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">If a patient continues to do well, he said, then it\u2019s worth exploring whether the medication is still needed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"css-1u37br4 eoo0vm40\" id=\"link-4774c6e4\">Is there still a medication shortage?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The stimulant shortage that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/drug-safety-and-availability\/fda-announces-shortage-adderall\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">began in 2022<\/a> continues. According to the Food and Drug Administration, as of March, methylphenidate hydrochloride extended release <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dps.fda.gov\/drugshortages\/activeingredient\/methylphenidate-hydrochloride-tablet-extended-release\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">tablets<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dps.fda.gov\/drugshortages\/activeingredient\/methylphenidate-film-extended-release\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">patches<\/a>, as well as <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dps.fda.gov\/drugshortages\/activeingredient\/methamphetamine-hydrochloride-tablet\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">other types<\/a> of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/dps.fda.gov\/drugshortages\/activeingredient\/amphetamine-aspartate-monohydrate-amphetamine-sulfate-dextroamphetamine-saccharate-dextroamphetamine-sulfate-tablet\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">amphetamine<\/a> tablets, are either unavailable or in short supply.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The availability of specific drugs and formulations can vary by region, Dr. Rostain said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt leads to a lot of uncertainty, unpredictability and a lot of anxiety on the part of patients,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/27\/well\/mind\/adhd-adderall-ritalin-stimulant-facts.html\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Health Secretary Robert F.
