Nine of the terminated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/news-events\/niaid-announces-antiviral-drug-development-awards\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">awards funded centers<\/a> conducting research on antiviral drugs to combat so-called priority pathogens that could give rise to entirely new pandemics.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis includes the antiviral projects designed to cover a wide range of families that could cause outbreaks or pandemics,\u201d said one senior N.I.H. official who spoke on condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The vaccine research also was not focused on Covid, but rather on other coronaviruses that one day might jump from animals to humans.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Describing all the research as Covid-related is \u201ca complete inaccuracy and simply a way to defund infectious disease research,\u201d the official said. Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the health secretary, has said that the N.I.H. is too focused on infectious diseases, the official noted.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The funding halts were first reported by <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/content\/article\/saying-pandemic-over-nih-institute-starts-cutting-covid-19-research\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Science<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-025-00954-y\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Nature<\/a>. The cancellations stunned scientists who had depended on the government\u2019s support. <\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe idea that we don\u2019t need further research to learn how to treat health problems caused by coronaviruses and prevent future pandemics because \u2018Covid-19 is over\u2019 is absurd,\u201d said Pamela Bjorkman, a structural biologist at Caltech who had been studying new vaccines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The goal of the projects was to have vaccines and drugs ready if a new pandemic hit, rather than spending precious months developing them from scratch.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn the last pandemic, we really were caught with our pants down,\u201d said Paul Bieniasz, a virologist at Rockefeller University who was collaborating with Dr. Bjorkman.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cAnd if we don\u2019t learn that lesson and prepare better for the next pandemic, we are unlikely to do better than we did last time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Bieniasz, Dr. Bjorkman and their colleagues were developing a vaccine that might protect <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/02\/11\/world\/could-a-single-vaccine-work-against-all-coronaviruses-scientists-are-working-on-one.html\" title=\"\">against a wide range of coronavirus species<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The researchers discovered new strategies to coax the immune system to learn how to recognize molecular features common to more than just one type of virus. Results from animal experiments were promising.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But now, with their funds abruptly cut, the scientists said they doubted they could build on those results. Dr. Bieniasz said that the termination had left him \u201cangry, disappointed, frustrated.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other scientists had been working on antiviral treatments, part of a program started <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2021\/06\/17\/health\/covid-pill-antiviral.html\" title=\"\">in 2021<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.niaid.nih.gov\/news-events\/niaid-announces-antiviral-drug-development-awards\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">With $577 million<\/a> in support from the N.I.H., a nationwide network of labs had been studying how viruses replicate, and then searching for drugs that could block them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The researchers focused on viral families that include some of the most worrisome pathogens known, such as Ebola and Nipah virus. Scientists had discovered a number of promising molecules and were advancing toward clinical trials.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Reuben Harris, a molecular virologist at UT Health San Antonio, said that the promising compounds uncovered by the program included an antiviral drug that stops Ebola and related viruses from entering cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt could be deployed to help a lot of people fast,\u201d Dr. Harris said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It looked as if some compounds might work against a number of virus families. \u201cIt\u2019s some of the most exciting science I\u2019ve seen in my career,\u201d said Nevan Krogan, a systems biologist at the University of California, San Francisco.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Wednesday morning, Dr. Krogan and dozens of his colleagues gathered in a campus meeting room to review those results.
