But if you build your car in the United States, there is no tariff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump said the new auto tariffs will take effect on April 2 and that the U.S. would start collecting the duties the following day. The president added he believes the new import duty could raise between $600 billion and $1 trillion in revenue for the U.S. over the next two years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This number will be used to reduce debt greatly,&#8221; Mr. Trump said. &#8220;Basically I view it as reducing taxes and reducing debt.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>White House staff secretary Will Scharf, who stood next to Mr. Trump during the announcement, offered a more conservative estimate of how much the new auto tariffs would raise, predicting roughly $100 billion in new revenue.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump also reiterated his goal of making interest paid on auto loans tax deductible, while noting that such a deduction would apply only to cars made in the U.S.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Tax deductions are generally only employed by high-income Americans because most taxpayers take the standard deduction, which means tax-deductible auto loans <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-car-tax-interest-on-auto-loans-fully-deductible\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">wouldn&#8217;t impact<\/a><\/span> low- or middle-income households.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/boston\/video\/new-trump-tariffs-and-the-possible-effect-on-economy\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">New Trump tariffs and the possible effect on economy<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">06:00<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The latest salvo of tariffs comes after Mr. Trump earlier this month gave a one-month exemption to U.S. automakers from the round of import duties that took effect on March 4.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because tariffs are taxes on imports that are largely passed onto U.S. consumers, they can cause households to cut back on spending and dampen economic growth, according to experts.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Shares of the Big Three U.S. automakers \u2014 Ford, General Motors and Stellantis \u2014 all sank after Mr. Trump announced the new tariffs. Tesla shares, which have slumped this year because of disappointing sales and\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/tesla-sales-elon-musk-reputation-brand-damage-trump-doge\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">consumer unhappiness<\/a><\/span>\u00a0over CEO Elon Musk&#8217;s involvement with the Trump administration, fell nearly 6% on the day and are down 33% this year.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Trump has long said that tariffs on auto imports would be a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/tariffs-timeline-trade-war-trump-canada-mexico-china-97819f94e424c0e7bba2812e09a721a7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">defining policy<\/a>\u00a0of his presidency, betting that the costs created by the taxes would lead both American and foreign automakers to relocate production to U.S. soil.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Automakers with U.S. plants still depend on Canada, Mexico and other nations for parts and finished vehicles. Because booting up manufacturing facilities would take time, in the medium term domestic auto prices would likely increase and car sales decline, experts say.<\/p>\n<p>One analysis of Mr. Trump&#8217;s tariffs estimated that auto prices could rise as much as\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/trump-tariffs-exemption-automakers-month-ford-gm-stellantis\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">$12,200 for some models<\/a><\/span>\u00a0due to the new import duties, according to a report from Anderson Economic Group, a Michigan-based economic consultancy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Targeting imported cars could strain ties with countries like Japan, South Korea, Canada, Mexico and Germany, which are key U.S. trading partners.<\/p>\n<p>About 50% of cars sold in the U.S. are manufactured within the country.
