Kennedy Jr.<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>has often trained his criticisms of vaccines on a common ingredient: aluminum, which he has suggested is responsible for a litany of childhood ailments, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=p6LJXPOv4SM\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">food allergies<\/a>, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.skyhorsepublishing.com\/carrel-books\/9781634504430\/thimerosal-let-the-science-speak\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">autism<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RobertKennedyJr\/status\/1108734709041938432\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">depression.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou wonder why a whole generation of children is allergic to stuff,\u201d Mr. Kennedy said during a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=lkKOt4SYYiY\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">2021 interview<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s because we\u2019re inducing allergies, pumping them full of aluminum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To many vaccine scientists, aluminum is a strange target. It is among the most studied ingredients in vaccines, and perhaps in modern medicine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThere\u2019s a huge amount of information that\u2019s gathered,\u201d said Dr. Andrew Racine, a pediatrician and chief medical officer at the Montefiore Health System. \u201cIf there was something jumping out about a lack of safety, we would most likely have seen it someplace, and it just doesn\u2019t appear.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Aluminum salts, a more soluble form of the metal, are added to vaccines like the Tdap shot to bolster the body\u2019s immune response. The ingredient has repeatedly been evaluated as a part of vaccines in clinical trials and administered in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41573-021-00163-y#:~:text=The%20word%20adjuvant%20(derived%20from,antibody%20responses%20than%20soluble%20toxoids.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">billions of doses<\/a> over several decades.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Even so, as Mr. Kennedy prepares for confirmation hearings as secretary of health and human services, many experts fear the standby will face fresh scrutiny, and may even serve as a justification for limiting access to several childhood vaccines, like the shots for hepatitis B and pneumococcal disease.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Aaron Siri, a lawyer and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/13\/health\/aaron-siri-rfk-jr-vaccines.html\" title=\"\">close ally of Mr. Kennedy,<\/a> has represented clients in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/static01.nyt.com\/newsgraphics\/documenttools\/820cd0a4b8a70a36\/c7f12a75-full.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">petitioning federal regulators<\/a> to pause the distribution of more than a dozen vaccines until the makers provided more information about the amount of aluminum in the formulations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy and Mr. Siri did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The origins of added aluminum in vaccines can be traced back nearly a century. In a stable on the outskirts of Paris, a young veterinarian had made a peculiar discovery: mixing tapioca into his horses\u2019 diphtheria vaccines made them more effective.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The doctor, Gaston Ramon, had noticed that the horses who developed a minor infection at the injection site had much more robust immunity against diphtheria. He theorized that adding something to his shots that caused inflammation \u2014 ingredients he <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC8023785\/#:~:text=The%20word%20adjuvant%20(derived%20from,abscesses%20at%20the%20site%20of\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">later named adjuvants<\/a>, derived from the Latin root \u201cto help\u201d \u2014 helped induce a stronger immune response.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After testing several candidates \u2014 including bread crumbs, petroleum jelly and rubber latex \u2014 he found success with a tapioca-laced injection, which produced slight swelling and far more antibodies.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tapioca never caught on as an adjuvant. But in 1932, a few years after Dr. Ramon\u2019s studies were published, the United States began including aluminum salts in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC3147301\/#R59\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">diphtheria immunizations<\/a>, as they were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/ia800705.us.archive.org\/17\/items\/b30625786\/b30625786.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">found to invoke<\/a> a similar but more reliable effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Today, aluminum adjuvants are found in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vaccinesafety.edu\/components-excipients\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">27 routine vaccines<\/a>, and nearly half of those recommended for children under 5.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This extra boost of immunity is not needed in all types of vaccines. Shots that contain a weakened form of a virus, like the measles mumps and rubella shot, or created with mRNA technology, like the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines, generate strong enough immune responses on their own.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But in vaccines that contain only small fragments of the pathogen, which would garner little attention from the immune system, adjuvants help stimulate a stronger response<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">, <\/strong>allowing vaccines to be given in fewer doses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Scientists believe that aluminum salts work in two ways. First, aluminum binds to the core component of the vaccine and causes it to diffuse into the bloodstream more slowly, giving immune cells more time to build a response.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It\u2019s also thought that aluminum operates more directly, enhancing the activity of certain immune cells, though this mechanism is <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1074761307004980#:~:text=Thereby%20adjuvants%20can%20affect%20the%20migration%2C%20maturation%2C,to%20antigen%20of%20T%20and%20B%20cells.&amp;text=Adjuvants%20may%20also%20act%20directly%20on%20T,are%20essential%20for%20the%20success%20of%20vaccines.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">not fully understood<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though aluminum salts are <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccine-safety\/about\/adjuvants.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">not the only adjuvants<\/a> on the market, vaccine makers often prefer them because of a lengthy track record of safety data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Each time a new vaccine that uses an aluminum adjuvant is developed, it undergoes lengthy clinical trials to evaluate its safety, and side effects are continuously monitored after approval. One of the earliest trials including an aluminum adjuvant was <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/jamanetwork.com\/journals\/jama\/fullarticle\/248887\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">published in 1934<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Later trials revealed some minor side effects, like redness, body aches and, in rare cases, painful nodules at the injection site. But there is little credible evidence that aluminum in vaccines causes serious, long-term side effects, as Mr. Kennedy has suggested.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People who are routinely exposed to large quantities of aluminum \u2014 such as workers who breathe in aluminum dust, or dialysis patients who routinely receive aluminum-rich medications \u2014 may experience respiratory, bone and neurological complications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The amount of aluminum in childhood vaccines, however, is trivial compared with what people are routinely exposed to via the environment and food, said Dr. Tony Moody, director of the Duke CIVICs Vaccine Center.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re exposed to aluminum constantly,\u201d he said. \u201cIf you inhale dust from the outside, you\u2019re coming into contact with aluminum.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the first six months of babies\u2019 lives, vaccines expose them to roughly <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chop.edu\/vaccine-education-center\/vaccine-safety\/vaccine-ingredients\/aluminum\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">4.4 milligrams<\/a> of aluminum. One slice of American cheese, by contrast, can contain <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0264410X11015799?via%3Dihub\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">as much as 50 milligrams<\/a> of aluminum.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-6\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When scientists compared aluminum levels in the blood and hair of babies who had been given aluminum-containing vaccines versus those who hadn\u2019t, they found <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1876285917304837\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">no significant difference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some scientists believe that one potential side effect needs additional research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2022, after a <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36180331\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">federally funded study<\/a> found a minor association between aluminum exposure from vaccines and asthma, the C.D.C. noted that the link warranted \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/vaccine-safety\/about\/adjuvants.html#:~:text=An%20observational%20study%20%5BPDF%20%2D%2010,in%20the%20Vaccine%20Safety%20Datalink.\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">further investigation<\/a>.\u201d (The agency said it would not change vaccine recommendations \u201cbased on a single study.\u201d)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Kennedy, who was then the chairman of Children\u2019s Health Defense, a nonprofit frequently critical of vaccines, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/childrenshealthdefense.org\/press-release\/robert-f-kennedy-jr-responds-to-new-cdc-study-on-the-association-between-aluminum-in-childhood-vaccines-and-asthma\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">held out the study as evidence<\/a> that immunizations were causing an \u201casthma epidemic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the authors of the paper were careful to point out the limitations of their findings, most notably that the effect was small and that the study was observational, which means it cannot prove cause-and-effect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In the paper, they cautioned that their results \u201cdo not constitute strong evidence for questioning the safety of aluminum in vaccines.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-7\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Independent experts also <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/allergyasthmanetwork.org\/news\/aluminum-vaccine-persistent-childhood-asthma\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">noted<\/a> that the authors did not collect data on several key risk factors, like whether the participants were exposed to cigarette smoke or had a family history of asthma \u2014 either of which could explain the difference they observed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In response to the study, a group of researchers from the Statens Serum Institut, Denmark\u2019s public health agency, ran a similar analysis on a national data set of more than 450,000 children.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Their preliminary results did not show an association between aluminum adjuvants and asthma, they <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/stacks.cdc.gov\/view\/cdc\/130166\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">told the C.D.C.\u2019s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices<\/a> in 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, a C.D.C. spokeswoman said the agency was \u201cdiscussing additional studies\u201d to investigate the potential risk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But until rigorous research can confirm the finding, the link between aluminum and asthma is tenuous at best, said Dr. Stanley Plotkin, who played a pivotal role in helping create the rubella vaccine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-8\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou cannot change conclusions from any single paper,\u201d he said. \u201cYou have to look at the overall literature.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Anders Hviid, who led the Danish study, said he welcomed more research into the safety of adjuvants, but he added that these studies might never be enough to convince skeptics that aluminum does not cause long-term side effects.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cYou cannot prove a negative,\u201d he said. \u201cThere will always be this goal-post moving, saying, \u2018Well, you didn\u2019t look at this and you didn\u2019t look at that in that way.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\"
