In the announcement, Dollar Tree\u2019s chief executive, Michael Creedon, called the sale a \u201cmajor milestone in our multiyear transformation journey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dollar Tree purchased Family Dollar in 2015 for about $9 billion, hoping the merger would help both stores reach more customers. But it struggled to effectively manage the Family Dollar brand. About a year ago, Dollar Tree said it would close nearly 1,000 of Family Dollar\u2019s roughly 8,000 stores.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In June, Dollar Tree announced <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/06\/05\/business\/family-dollar-dollar-tree-sale.html\" title=\"\">it was exploring plans to sell Family Dollar<\/a>, citing inflation, theft and the end of pandemic-era benefits from the federal government.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Family Dollar\u2019s stores are predominantly in urban areas and serve mostly low-income shoppers, who have been squeezed the hardest by inflation. Dollar Tree has more stores in suburban areas and caters to consumers with relatively higher incomes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dollar Tree also reported its latest quarterly earnings on Wednesday, noting potential drags on its sales including \u201ctariffs or other measures that create barriers or restrictions on trade.\u201d The company also warned in December that tariffs could affect its prices and inventory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Other U.S. retailers have also been struggling recently. Walgreens has said it <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/10\/15\/business\/walgreens-store-closures-earnings.html\" title=\"\">plans to close about 1,200 stores<\/a> over the coming three years. The party supplies retailer Party City announced late last year that <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/12\/21\/business\/party-city-closing.html\" title=\"\">it would close all its stores<\/a>. And last week, Forever 21\u2019s operator in the United States <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/17\/business\/forever-21-bankruptcy.html\" title=\"\">filed for
