He also used his renown to dupe deep-pocketed buyers, including <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2009\/10\/08\/world\/europe\/08lambert.html\" title=\"\">Prince Abdullah bin Khalifa Al-Thani of Qatar<\/a>, into believing they were purchasing genuine pieces of royal history.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He attested to the authenticity of seating said to have belonged to Marie Antoinette and to the mistress of Louis XV, Madame du Barry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">People believed so fully in Mr. Pallot because almost 40 years ago he wrote what was long considered the book on the topic: \u201cThe Art of the Chair in 18th Century France,\u201d which includes a preface by his friend, the antique enthusiast and fashion designer <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/19\/obituaries\/karl-lagerfeld-dead.html\" title=\"\">Karl Lagerfeld<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, Mr. Pallot is perhaps best known for using his knowledge of art history to hoodwink some of the most esteemed antique experts and buyers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, after years of investigations by the French police, Mr. Pallot and five others said to be involved in a scheme to unload fakes onto unsuspecting buyers attended the first day of a criminal trial in Pontoise, near Paris, where they stand accused of trafficking in counterfeit antique furniture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2016, the French culture ministry issued a statement saying that the police were <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/04\/30\/arts\/design\/french-museum-fakes.html\" title=\"\">investigating the authenticity<\/a> of pieces of furniture valued at 2.7 million euros (about $2.9 million), including two Louis XV chairs, purchased by the Palace of Versailles. That inquiry led to the conclusion they were not authentic and to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gqmagazine.fr\/pop-culture\/gq-enquete\/articles\/bill-pallot-gentleman-arnaqueur\/52117\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the arrest of Mr. Pallot<\/a> the same year. In 2017, the scandal also changed how the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theartnewspaper.com\/2017\/04\/30\/france-cracks-down-on-fakes-with-new-acquisitions-rules\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">French authorities authenticated antiques<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But doubts about Mr. Pallot had begun to surface years before, most notably for his fellow antique dealer and former student, Charles Hooreman, who shared his concerns with Mr. Pallot, as well as with buyers and the French authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2018, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/style\/2018\/07\/how-a-sneaky-furniture-expert-tricked-versailles?srsltid=AfmBOornoWnxUWyxctMKcZXzEVOGhKWctU_KiTSZEnWSyJTaA9JdP2Tr\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Mr. Hooreman told Vanity Fair<\/a> that he had considered Mr. Pallot his \u201chero\u201d after attending his art history lectures at the Sorbonne. He later entered the same profession as his teacher, but he became suspicious of his mentor based on conversations with a buyer and about the quantity of antiques surfacing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As far back as 2012, Mr. Hooreman said he had seen two folding benches that were being touted as having belonged to Princess Louise \u00c9lisabeth, the eldest daughter of King Louis XV. He felt compelled to test them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI licked the chair and voil\u00e0. I could taste the fraud,\u201d he told Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Familiar with the methods used by master craftsmen for restoration, he recognized a trick used by a woodworker whom Mr. Pallot favored, Bruno Desnoues. Mr. Desnoues used melted licorice to give new wood an old feel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Desnoues is also on trial now and has admitted his role in the scheme. Mr. Pallot himself has widely admitted complicity but denies there are as many fakes as Mr. Hooreman has claimed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">An investigative judge in France noted in a previous proceeding that a smiling Mr. Pallot had told the court about the origins of the deception: He and Mr. Desnoues had become curious about whether they could make a good fake one day while the craftsman was restoring authentic antiques, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/societe\/article\/2025\/03\/25\/une-arnaque-aux-faux-sieges-marie-antoinette-qui-a-dupe-le-chateau-de-versailles-ou-le-frere-de-l-emir-du-qatar-devant-la-justice_6585998_3224.html\"
