Department of Health<\/a>\u00a0said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Health officials said Monday in a statement that the agency &#8220;was notified of a confirmed case of measles in a person who visited multiple locations in D.C. while contagious.&#8221; Others who were at the same locations \u2014 an Amtrak train, a D.C. train station and an urgent care center \u2014 could potentially have been exposed at those times. <\/p>\n<p>The measles patient rode the southbound Amtrak Northeast Regional 175 train on March 19, from 7:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., arriving at Union Station, the city&#8217;s main train station,<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>the health department said. A health department spokesperson did not share where the individual boarded the train, but Amtrak transit\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/content.amtrak.com\/content\/timetable\/Northeast%20Regional.pdf?_gl=1*16yftfq*_gcl_au*NDQyNjkyMjAwLjE3NDI5MjQ1NDE.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">schedules<\/a>\u00a0show the route started in Boston, reached New York City a little before 7:30 p.m., and stopped in numerous other cities along the East Coast, including Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore, before reaching D.C.<\/p>\n<p>Officials said the infected person visited a MedStar Urgent Care in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of D.C. on March 22, between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m<strong>.\u00a0<\/strong>Health care providers are required to report all suspected and confirmed cases of measles to the D.C. health department.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Individuals who might have been at exposed at any of those locations are advised to contact their providers or D.C. health officials by calling 844-493-2652, although officials note that people who have been vaccinated against measles are likely protected.<\/p>\n<p>Before becoming contagious, the individual with measles had flown from Minnesota into Reagan National Airport, a spokesperson for the D.C. Health Department told CBS News. Neither the identity nor a description of the individual has been released, but the spokesperson said they were vaccinated against measles.<\/p>\n<p>This case comes amid <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-outbreak-us-map\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">a marked spike in measles infections<\/a><\/span>\u00a0in the United States, which since the start of 2025 has already recorded the most measles cases in a single year since 2019, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most of those infections stemmed from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dshs.texas.gov\/news-alerts\/measles-outbreak-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Texas outbreak<\/a>\u00a0that has sickened more than 300 people since late January and resulted in <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-death-texas-outbreak\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">one child&#8217;s death<\/a><\/span>. An adult with measles also <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/measles-new-mexico-death-investigation\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">died in New Mexico<\/a><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Considered one of the most contagious infectious diseases, measles can in some instances cause severe infections that result in cognitive issues, deafness and even death. The CDC warns that roughly 1 of every 1,000 children with measles develops brain swelling that can lead to brain damage, and as many as 3 of every 1,000 children with measles dies from the disease. <\/p>\n<p>A vaccine against the illness, usually administered as part of the measles-mumps-rubella or MMR shot, is\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/texas-measles-outbreak-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">highly effective and safe<\/a><\/span>, with the CDC reporting that two doses are about 97% effective at preventing measles, and a single dose is about 93% effective. The Texas outbreak, for instance, occurred in a community with very low vaccination rates, and Texas health officials said the child who died in that outbreak was unvaccinated.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. has confirmed at least 377 measles cases so far this year, as of the latest CDC update on Friday, March 21. There have been cases in at least 16 states, including Texas, California, Florida, Georgia, New Mexico and New York. The CBS News data team is tracking confirmed measles cases nationwide as state health departments and the CDC continue to release data (the map below is updated with new data from the CDC on Fridays).<\/p>\n<div>\n<div style=\"min-height:605px\" id=\"datawrapper-vis-IF2bI\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/IF2bI\/full.png\" alt=\"U.S. map showing number of reported cases of measles in 2025.\"\/><\/div>\n<p> <amp-iframe width=\"100\" height=\"100\" layout=\"responsive\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts allow-same-origin\" resizable=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/datawrapper.dwcdn.net\/IF2bI\/55\/\">  <\/amp-iframe><\/div>\n<p>Measles symptoms usually appear between 7 and 14 days after exposure to the virus, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/measles\/about\/index.html#cdc_disease_basics_symptoms-signs-and-symptoms\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">according to the CDC<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/what-is-measles-mmr-vaccine-symptoms\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Symptoms<\/a><\/span> can include a high fever, cough, runny nose, red and watery eyes, and a rash.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The virus spreads through the air when an infected person coughs, sneezes <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/measles\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20374857\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">or talks<\/a>.
