But they can generate images, too.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Tuesday, OpenAI beefed up its ChatGPT chatbot with new technology designed to generate images from detailed, complex and unusual instructions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For instance, if you describe a four-panel comic strip, including the characters who appear in each panel and what they are saying to one another, the technology can instantly generate an elaborate cartoon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though previous versions of ChatGPT could generate images, they could not reliably create images by blending such a wide array of concepts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The new version of ChatGPT is indicative of a wider change in artificial intelligence technology. After beginning as systems that merely generated text, chatbots are morphing into tools that combine chatting with various other abilities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The technology than underpins the new version of ChatGPT \u2014 called GPT 4-o \u2014 also allows the chatbot to <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/05\/13\/technology\/openai-chatgpt-app.html\" title=\"\">receive and respond to voice commands, images and videos<\/a>. It can even speak.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\"><a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/12\/10\/technology\/ai-chat-bot-chatgpt.html\" title=\"\">Released at the end of 2022<\/a>, the original ChatGPT learned its skills by analyzing enormous amounts of text from across the internet. It learned to answer questions, write poetry and generate computer code.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It could not generate images. But about a year later, OpenAI <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/20\/technology\/chatgpt-dalle3-images-openai.html\" title=\"\">released a new version of ChatGPT<\/a> that could generate images <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/06\/technology\/openai-images-dall-e.html\" title=\"\">called DALL-E<\/a>. But ChatGPT and DALL-E were separate systems.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Now, OpenAI has built a single system that learns a wide range of skills from both text and images. In generating its own images, this system can draw on everything ChatGPT has learned from the internet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThis is a completely new kind of technology under the hood,\u201d said Gabriel Goh, an OpenAI researcher. \u201cWe don\u2019t break up image generation and text generation. We want it all to be done together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Traditionally, A.I. image generators have struggled to create images that were markedly different from any existing image.
