Or do they signal something more ominous and irreversible?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After sitting below 4 percent for more than two years, the overall unemployment rate has topped that threshold since May.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Economists say that the job market remains strong by historical standards and that much of the recent weakening appears connected to the economic impact of the pandemic. Companies hired aggressively amid surging demand, then shifted to layoffs once the Federal Reserve began raising interest rates. Many of these companies have sought to make their operations leaner under pressure from investors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But amid rapid advances in artificial intelligence and President Trump\u2019s targeting of federal agencies, which disproportionately support white-collar jobs, some wonder if a permanent decline for knowledge work has begun.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWe\u2019re seeing a meaningful transition in the way work is done in the white-collar world,\u201d said Carl Tannenbaum, the chief economist of Northern Trust. \u201cI tell people a wave is coming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">To date, few industries epitomize the shift of the last few years better than the making of video games, which <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2023-11-20\/video-game-industry-layoffs\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">began a boom in 2020<\/a> as couch-bound Americans sought out new forms of home entertainment. The industry hired aggressively before reversing course and embarking on a period of layoffs. Thousands of video-game workers lost jobs last year and the year before.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The scale of the job loss was such that the host of the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/gamechoiceawards.com\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Game Developers Choice Awards<\/a>, the industry\u2019s annual awards show, complained about \u201crecord layoffs\u201d during her opening monologue in 2024. That same year, a unionization trend that had begun with lower-paid quality assurance testers spread to better-paid workers like game producers, designers and engineers at companies that make the hit games <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/cwa-union.org\/news\/releases\/workers-bethesda-game-studios-achieve-union-recognition-cwa-becoming-first-wall-wall#:~:text=For%20the%20Media-,Workers%20at%20Bethesda%20Game%20Studios%20Achieve%20Union%20Recognition%20with%20CWA,to%2DWall%20Union%20at%20Microsoft&amp;text=(Rockville%2C%20Md.),a%20Microsoft%20video%20game%20studio\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Fallout<\/a> and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-07-24\/world-of-warcraft-unionizes-growing-foothold-at-microsoft-s-activision-blizzard?accessToken=eyJhbGciOiJIUzI1NiIsInR5cCI6IkpXVCJ9.eyJzb3VyY2UiOiJTdWJzY3JpYmVyR2lmdGVkQXJ0aWNsZSIsImlhdCI6MTcyMTg3MjkxNywiZXhwIjoxNzIyNDc3NzE3LCJhcnRpY2xlSWQiOiJTSDFES1ZUMVVNMFcwMCIsImJjb25uZWN0SWQiOiJDQThGQ0Y4NkY1QjY0ODlCODA4ODkwNTFBNjMxRERBRCJ9.3B1fXlW3HERUFFP4BCHzuH7DwXczMPEGv5VjkCRfPyo\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">World of Warcraft<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">At Bethesda Game Studios, which is owned by Microsoft and makes Fallout, workers said they unionized partly because they were alarmed by rounds of layoffs at the company in 2023 and 2024 and felt that a union would give them leverage in a softening labor market.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIt was the first time that Bethesda had experienced layoffs in a very, very long time,\u201d said Taylor Welling, a producer at the studio, who holds a master\u2019s degree in interactive entertainment. \u201cThat sort of scared a lot of people.\u201d Microsoft declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Unemployment in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/webapps\/legacy\/cpsatab14.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">finance and related industries<\/a>, while still low, increased by about a quarter from 2022 to 2024, as rising interest rates slowed demand for mortgages and companies sought to become leaner. On an <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fool.com\/earnings\/call-transcripts\/2024\/07\/12\/wells-fargo-wfc-q2-2024-earnings-call-transcript\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">earnings call<\/a> last summer, the chief executive of Wells Fargo noted that the company\u2019s \u201cefficiency initiatives\u201d had pruned the company\u2019s work force for 16 straight quarters, including a nearly 50 percent reduction of workers in the company\u2019s home lending division since 2023.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Last fall, Wells Fargo laid off about one-quarter of the roughly 45 employees on its conduct management intake team, which reviews accusations of company misconduct against customers and employees. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/hero3\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Heather Rolfes,<\/a> a lawyer who was let go, said that she believed the company was seeking to save money by shrinking its U.S. work force, and that she and her colleagues were a tempting target because they had recently sought to unionize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI think it was great for them to get rid of two birds with one stone,\u201d Ms. Rolfes said. Some of her former co-workers say they anxiously await every Tuesday after a payday, because that\u2019s when the company tends to inform workers about job cuts. \u201cWe feel like at any moment we could be laid off,\u201d said <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.dnb.com\/contact-directory\/contact-profile.eden_davis.32890f693e0b398bef13337aede4f674.html\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Eden Davis,<\/a> another worker on the team.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A Wells Fargo spokesman said in a statement that the layoffs had nothing to do with the union and that \u201cwe regularly review and adjust staffing levels to align with market conditions.\u201d He noted that two managers on the team had also lost their jobs.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Atif Rafiq, the author of a book on corporate strategy who has held senior positions at McDonald\u2019s and Amazon, said many companies were seeking to emulate Amazon\u2019s model of building cross-functional teams that reduce barriers between workers with different expertise, like coding and marketing. In the process, they may discover redundancies and undertake layoffs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In a memo announcing <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/24\/business\/starbucks-layoffs.html\" title=\"\">the layoffs<\/a> at Starbucks last month, Brian Niccol, the chief executive, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/about.starbucks.com\/press\/2025\/message-from-brian-global-support-partner-announcement\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">cited a goal<\/a> of \u201cremoving layers and duplication and creating smaller, more nimble teams.\u201d Nissan offered a similar rationale for management cuts <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/autos\/nissan-to-cut-20-of-top-management-positions-c8af737f?mod=itp_wsj\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> this month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Overall, the latest data from the Federal Reserve Bank of New York <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorkfed.org\/research\/college-labor-market\/#--:explore:unemployment\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">show<\/a> that the unemployment rate for college grads has risen 30 percent since bottoming out in September 2022 (to 2.6 percent from 2 percent), versus about 18 percent for all workers (to 4 percent from 3.4 percent). An analysis by Julia Pollak, chief economist of ZipRecruiter, shows that unemployment has been most elevated among those with bachelor\u2019s degrees or some college but no degree, while unemployment has been steady or falling at the very top and bottom of the education ladder \u2014 for those with advanced degrees or without a high school diploma.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Hiring rates have slowed more for jobs requiring a college degree than for other jobs, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.adpresearch.com\/employment-and-hiring-by-job-zone\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">according to ADP Research<\/a>, which studies the labor market.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some economists say these trends may be short term in nature and little cause for concern on their own. Lawrence Katz, a labor economist at Harvard, noted that the uptick in unemployment for college-educated workers was only modestly larger than the increase in unemployment overall, and that unemployment for both groups remained low by historical measures.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Professor Katz argued that slower growth in wages for upper-middle-class workers could simply reflect a discount that these workers effectively accepted in return for being able to work from home. <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.epi.org\/299300\/pre\/6f7b90fc1f3dfd837259e8a8eab14d6ee5a3c4c4d435f2b8d0f84ec791a4a807\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Data from the liberal Economic Policy Institute<\/a> shows that wages for workers in the 70th and 80th percentiles of the income distribution have grown more slowly than those of any other group since 2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But there are other signs that the returns on a college degree may have shifted over a longer period. The gap in wages between those with a college degree and those without one <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frbsf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/wp2025-01.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">grew steadily<\/a> beginning in 1980, but flattened during the past 15 years, though it remains high.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The flattening may partly reflect the fact that there are more college-educated workers for employers to choose from, as college attendance has increased. But some economists <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frbsf.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/wp2025-01.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">argue<\/a> that it reflects <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.frbsf.org\/economic-research\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/wp2016-17.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">employers\u2019 reduced need<\/a> for college graduates \u2014 for example, fewer jobs like bookkeeping as information technology has become more sophisticated. Such jobs don\u2019t necessarily require a college degree but were often attractive to graduates because they once paid them a relatively high wage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">And artificial intelligence could reduce that need further by increasing the automation of white-collar jobs. A recent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4945566\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">academic paper<\/a> found that software developers who used an A.I. coding assistant improved a key measure of productivity by more than 25 percent, and that the productivity gains appeared to be largest among the least experienced developers. The result suggested that adopting A.I. could reduce the wage premium enjoyed by more experienced coders, since it would erode their productivity advantages over novices.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mert Demirer, an M.I.T. economist who was a co-author of the paper, said in an interview that a software developer\u2019s job could change over the longer term, so that the human coder became a kind of project manager overseeing multiple A.I. assistants. In that case, wages could rise as the human became more productive. And A.I. could end up expanding employment among coders if cheaper software led to even greater demand.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Still, at least in the near term, many tech executives and their investors appear to see A.I. as a way <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/02\/business\/klarna-ceo-ai.html\" title=\"\">to trim their staffing<\/a>. A software engineer at a large tech company who declined to be named for fear of harming his job prospects said that his team was about half the size it was last year and that he and his co-workers were expected to do roughly the same amount of work by relying on an A.I. assistant. Overall, the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/webapps\/legacy\/cpsatab14.htm\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">unemployment rate<\/a> in tech and related industries jumped by more than half from 2022 to 2024, to 4.4 percent from 2.9 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Then there are Mr. Trump\u2019s attempts to remake the federal government, which have so far resulted in job losses and hiring freezes for <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/07\/business\/economy\/federal-workers-layoffs-job-market.html\" title=\"\">federal employees<\/a> and employees at universities and other nonprofits that rely on government funding. Johns Hopkins University, which relies heavily on federal research funding, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/us\/trump-cuts-johns-hopkins-university-layoffs.html\" title=\"\">announced<\/a> this month that it was laying off 2,000 workers worldwide as a result of Mr. Trump\u2019s cuts.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Professor Katz of Harvard noted that a larger portion of college-educated workers depended on the federal government for their jobs than other groups, either directly or through the funding of nonprofits. \u201cWhat appears to be a major contraction of spending on science and research, on education, by the government \u2014 that is going to potentially have a very large impact,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe overall unemployment rate for college graduates doesn\u2019t look particularly elevated,\u201d he added. \u201cBut it may be in the next six months.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
