The technique could help reveal the biochemistry of amber as it forms, a process that otherwise would remain hidden in the fog of prehistory.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Published on Monday in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-025-89448-5\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the journal Scientific Reports<\/a>, the results of the fast-fossilization experiment are akin to a meal made in a pressure cooker. \u201cIt\u2019s similar to an Instapot,\u201d said Evan Saitta, a research associate at the Field Museum in Chicago and co-author of the paper.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The recipe for synthetic amber started with pine resin from the Chicago Botanic Garden. Dr. Saitta and his co-author, Thomas Kaye, an independent paleontologist, placed half-inch sediment disks in which the resin was embedded in a device Mr. Kaye built using a medical pill compressor, air canisters and other scavenged parts.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By both heating and pressuring the samples, the researchers were trying to simulate diagenesis, the slow, wet physical and chemical transformation required before sediment consolidates into rock.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cDiagenesis is the ultimate hurdle you need to pass to become a fossil,\u201d Dr. Saitta said. \u201cIt\u2019s sort of the final boss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Some samples produced by the researchers were imperfect, but a few echoed amber\u2019s physical properties, such as darkened coloration, fracture lines, dehydration and increased luster.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The two also realized that they had started with the wrong family of pine tree. The amber most often studied in paleontology is Sciadopitys, a group of trees whose<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\"> <\/em>only living relative is the Japanese umbrella pine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Maria McNamara, a paleontologist at University College Cork in Ireland who was not involved in the study, said future experiments should test additional plant types.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cWhat we really want to get a handle on is which resins polymerize faster,\u201d she said. She also pointed out that a chemical analysis of the accelerated amber was necessary to know how close \u2014 or not \u2014 it was to the real stuff. \u201cThe tree resin has survived, but we need a proper, full chemical characterization,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For all the study\u2019s limitations, Dr. McNamara said that simulated fossilization was an increasingly important research area. Some paleontologists have recreated <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/the-paleontological-society-papers\/article\/abs\/experimental-decay-of-soft-tissues\/E9558E1B145F09CFAED27ED4B88FF195\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">bone or tissue decay<\/a> to explore microbial effects. In her lab, researchers have \u201c<a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.rsc.org\/en\/content\/articlelanding\/2024\/ra\/d4ra04364b\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">thermally matured\u201d specimens<\/a> to investigate the preservation of biological molecules under heat.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Without such simulations, \u201cwe\u2019re just trusting the fossil record,\u201d she said. \u201cExperiments help us tell fact from fiction and determine the extent to which the fossil record is lying.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Dr. Saitta has tried other simulations. In 2018, he buried <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s12542-018-0411-y\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a finch<\/a> in wet sediment to see how it would be compacted. That was messy and unsuccessful. But after working with Mr. Kaye on the pressure-cooker device, they had more success studying the earlier stages of fossilization of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/pala.12386\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">leaves, feathers and lizard feet<\/a>. With those specimens, the keratin in a feather, for instance, leached away, leaving a dark melanin-like imprint similar to a fossilized feather. (At conferences, Dr. Saitta said, he likes to test other paleontologists to spot the visual difference between a simulant and a real fossil.)<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In future amber experiments, Dr. Saitta aims to embed insects, feathers or plants in resin. One reason this could prove useful is that real specimens are valuable \u2014 some trade for thousands of dollars \u2014 making destructive analysis unfeasible. \u201cA preserved insect in synthetic amber would not be precious, since it would be lab-made,\u201d Dr. Saitta said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The researchers also plan to adapt their technique to pressure-cook decayed organic material and simulate geological weathering.<strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\"> <\/strong>This would more realistically capture more stages of fossilization.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Looking further ahead, experimental fossilization techniques may even allow scientists to explore the fossils of the future, Dr. Saitta said. How will <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/03\/05\/climate\/anthropocene-humans-climate.html\" title=\"\">Anthropocene life<\/a> fossilize? What would happen to tissue or bone infused with microplastic or industrial heavy metals?<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">We won\u2019t be here millions of years from now to find out. But with a pressure-cooker-like device, we may get closer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script async
