The I.R.S. has long encouraged undocumented immigrants to pay their taxes, giving people without Social Security numbers a separate nine-digit code called an individual taxpayer identification number to file their returns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tax information is closely guarded because federal law bars improper disclosure. I.R.S. officials had resisted earlier requests from the Department of Homeland Security to turn over information about unauthorized immigrants, warning that doing so could violate federal law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But the Trump administration has since <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/13\/us\/politics\/trump-irs-lawyer-doge.html\" title=\"\">replaced the top I.R.S. lawyer<\/a>, and the agreement now under discussion appears to be narrower than <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/02\/28\/us\/politics\/irs-immigrants-addresses.html\" title=\"\">an earlier request<\/a>, which asked the I.R.S. to hand over, rather than confirm, migrants\u2019 addresses.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Officials were still finalizing the agreement, the terms of which were earlier <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/us-policy\/2025\/03\/22\/ice-irs-immigrants-deport\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported by The Washington Post<\/a>. A spokeswoman for the Treasury Department, which oversees the I.R.S., did not respond to a request for comment.
