They say that he had stolen two pairs of diamond earrings worth a total of $769,500 from Tiffany &amp; Company in Orlando \u2014 then swallowed them hours later as the police were about to arrest him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Friday, the Orlando Police Department announced that it had recovered the earrings from Mr. Gilder, who spent more than 12 days in a hospital, when they were \u201cexpelled from his system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The police said that on Feb. 26, Mr. Gilder of Houston, using the alias \u201cShawn\u201d and posing as a representative for an N.B.A. player on the Orlando Magic, was escorted into a private room in the back of a Tiffany &amp; Company store in an Orlando mall.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There, he viewed two pairs of diamond earrings, valued at $769,500, and a diamond ring, worth $587,000, according to court records. Mr. Gilder was looking at the jewelry when he suddenly jumped up and grabbed it, according to the arrest warrant filed by an Orlando police officer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Gilder rushed toward the door, pushing and pulling at the handle as he tried to leave, the warrant said. But as he struggled to get out, an employee pulled the ring from him. Mr. Gilder was able to flee with the earrings, the warrant said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Using security cameras and license plate reader technology, the police were able to identify the car that Mr. Gilder had driven out of the mall. Later that night, he was pulled over for a traffic violation about five hours northwest of Orlando, 100 miles west of Tallahassee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As Mr. Gilder, who had 48 separate failure-to-appear violations from Colorado, was being taken into custody, he sneakily \u201cswallowed several items,\u201d the arrest warrant said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">When he was transferred to a jail in Washington County, Fla., several \u201cforeign objects,\u201d believed to be the diamond earrings, showed up on an X-ray image, the authorities said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s when he asked a staff member at the jail about whether he would be charged with what was in his stomach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After the earrings that Mr. Gilder swallowed were recovered, the authorities took them back to Tiffany &amp; Company, where they were cleaned and inspected, the police said. The serial numbers on the jewelry matched the numbers on the missing earrings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Contact information for Mr. Gilder was not available on Friday. It was not clear from court records whether he had a lawyer. The Tiffany &amp; Company store in Orlando did not respond to a phone call seeking comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">After a review of Mr. Gilder\u2019s records, the police said that he had been charged \u201cwith a nearly identical robbery\/theft\u201d from a Tiffany &amp; Company in Texas.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As to whether one can be charged for stolen property that one ingests, Mr. Gilder appeared to answer his own question just after his arrest.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">According to the authorities, one of the arresting officers overheard him saying, \u201cI should have thrown them out the
