He lived in Louisiana.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Boeing had threatened to break John, and break him it did,&#8221; the attorneys wrote in court papers on behalf of his family.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing has not yet responded in court filings.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are saddened by John Barnett&#8217;s death and extend our condolences to his family,&#8221; the company said in a statement this week.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barnett was a <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/john-barnett-boeing-whistleblower-death\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Boeing employee for 32 years<\/a><\/span>, working as a quality-control manager before he retired in 2017. In the years after that, he shared his concerns with journalists and became a whistleblower.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;John became concerned when he transferred to Boeing&#8217;s South Carolina plant in 2010 \u2014 quality issues, procedures that wasn&#8217;t being followed, short cuts that was trying to be taken,&#8221; his brother Rodney Barnett,\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/john-barnett-boeing-whistleblower-family-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">told CBS Morning News<\/a><\/span> in an exclusive interview in March 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-image is-image embed--float-none embed--size-medium\">\n<p>      <span class=\"img embed__content\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" alt=\"rodney-vicky-still.png \" height=\"348\" width=\"620\" class=\" lazyload\" srcset=\"https:\/\/assets1.cbsnewsstatic.com\/hub\/i\/r\/2024\/03\/27\/fa850e61-d466-4775-9f00-e30b4d727921\/thumbnail\/620x348\/7182461facb16e33ac66c08a8bd5593c\/rodney-vicky-still.png?v=9e5c48f1b04ac2a564e8a4c51250ac89 1x\"\/><\/span><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__caption\">Rodney Barnett and Vicky Stokes, the brother and mother of Boeing whistleblower John Barnett, who died in March 2024, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the aviation giant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                  <span class=\"embed__credit\"><\/p>\n<p>                CBS News<\/p>\n<p>                          <\/span><br \/>\n              <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Barnett said he once saw discarded metal shavings near wiring for the flight controls that could have cut the wires and caused a catastrophe. He also noted problems with up to a quarter of the oxygen systems on Boeing&#8217;s 787 planes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barnett shared his concerns with his supervisors and others before leaving Boeing, but according to the lawsuit they responded by ignoring him and then harassing him.<\/p>\n<p>Boeing intentionally gave Barnett inaccurate, poor job reviews and less desirable shifts, according to the lawsuit. Barnett&#8217;s family argues the company publicly blamed him for delays that angered his co-workers and prevented him from transferring to another plant.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"embed embed--type-video embed--type-content_video is-video embed--float-none embed--size-medium \"><figcaption class=\"embed__caption-container\">\n                              <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/video\/boeing-whistleblowers-60-minutes-video-2024-12-08\/\" class=\"embed__headline-link\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\"><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__icon\"><br \/>\n            <svg viewbox=\"0 0 32 32\" aria-hidden=\"true\">\n              <use xlink:href=\"#icon-video\"\/>\n            <\/svg><br \/>\n          <\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__headline\">Boeing whistleblowers reveal years of concerns over airplane parts | 60 Minutes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>          <span class=\"embed__video-duration\">13:12<\/span><\/p>\n<p>                      <\/a><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Barnett eventually was diagnosed with PTSD and his mental condition deteriorated, his family said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whether or not Boeing intended to drive John to his death or merely destroy his ability to function, it was absolutely foreseeable that PTSD and John&#8217;s unbearable depression, panic attacks, and anxiety, which would in turn lead to an elevated risk of suicide,&#8221; the lawsuit said. &#8220;Boeing may not have pulled the trigger, but Boeing&#8217;s conduct was the clear cause, and the clear foreseeable cause, of John&#8217;s death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2>Alaska Airlines blowout\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p>A panel of experts in February 2024 criticized Boeing&#8217;s safety culture, raising the heat on the aircraft manufacturer following a Jan. 5 incident in which the door panel of an Alaska Airlines 737 Max 9 plane made by the\u00a0<span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/boeing-737-max-9-alaska-airlines-door-what-to-know\/\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">Boeing blew off mid-flight<\/a><\/span>. The incident came after other safety issues <span class=\"link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/boeing-737-max-9-alaska-airlines-door-what-to-know\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-invalid-url-rewritten-http=\"\">had been linked<\/a><\/span> to Boeing&#8217;s Max line of aircraft, heightening concerns about the jet&#8217;s safety.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/newsroom\/Sec103_ExpertPanelReview_Report_Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">report<\/a>\u00a0following the Alaska Airlines blowout, the Federal Aviation Administration said a panel of government and aviation industry experts had &#8220;found a lack of awareness of safety-related metrics at all levels&#8221; of Boeing, adding that &#8220;employees had difficulty distinguishing the differences among various measuring methods, their purpose and outcomes.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The failure of quality control at Boeing over the last decade is well known and well documented, as are the consequences of that failure, which include planes crashing and coming apart in the air,&#8221; lawyers state in the lawsuit filed on behalf of Barnett&#8217;s mother Vicky Stokes and two other family members.<\/p>\n<p>The lawsuit doesn&#8217;t specify the amount of damages sought by Barnett&#8217;s family but asks for compensation for emotional distress and mental anguish, back pay, 10 years of lost future earnings as well as bonuses, health expenses and his lost life insurance benefits.<\/p>\n<p>___<\/p>\n<p><em>If you or someone you know is in emotional distress or a suicidal crisis, you can reach the\u00a0<\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/988lifeline.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>988 Suicide &amp; Crisis Lifeline<\/em><\/a><em>\u00a0by calling or texting 988.
