Solo Dining May Be a Sign."},"content":{"rendered":"<p> <script async src=\"https:\/\/pagead2.googlesyndication.com\/pagead\/js\/adsbygoogle.js?client=ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     crossorigin=\"anonymous\"><\/script>\r\n<!-- ItShrt World News -->\r\n<ins class=\"adsbygoogle\"\r\n     style=\"display:block\"\r\n     data-ad-client=\"ca-pub-6606220950177433\"\r\n     data-ad-slot=\"1882483372\"\r\n     data-ad-format=\"auto\"\r\n     data-full-width-responsive=\"true\"><\/ins>\r\n<script>\r\n     (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});\r\n<\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-0\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Americans are making too many solo dinner reservations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That was one takeaway from the annual World Happiness Report, which was released on Thursday and showed that the United States had dipped to its lowest slot in the country rankings \u2014 24th \u2014 after being ranked as high as 11th in 2012, the first year of the report.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Americans are increasingly miserable, the report says, and it explored a possible indicator: The number of <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/worldhappiness.report\/ed\/2025\/sharing-meals-with-others-how-sharing-meals-supports-happiness-and-social-connections\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Americans eating alone<\/a> has risen exponentially this century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In 2023, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics\u2019s American Time Use Survey, about a quarter of Americans reported eating all of their meals alone the previous day, an increase of 53 percent since 2003.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe extent to which you share meals is predictive of the social support you have, the pro-social behaviors you exhibit and the trust you have in others<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">,\u201d <\/em>Jan-Emmanuel De Neve, a University of Oxford professor and an author of the report, said in an interview.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">This trend is even more pronounced among young people. For American adults under 25, there has been an 80 percent increase in dining alone, numbers that Dr. De Neve called \u201cdisconcerting.\u201d The survey, which is compiled annually by a consortium of groups including Gallup, offers another data point in the so-called loneliness epidemic, which researchers and officials have said in recent years is becoming a bigger concern, particularly among young men as they spend more and more time on their phones.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Eating alone increases political polarization as well, Dr. De Neve said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe fact that we\u2019re increasingly socially isolated means also that we\u2019re not testing our ideas about the world with other people,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd the more you sit around the table with other people who might have somewhat different views, the more you start moderating your own views. And the increasing lack of social interaction and social isolation as a result, for a lot of people \u2014 amplified by echo chambers \u2014 makes people more radical<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The report also makes the case that declining happiness and social trust in the United States and parts of Europe has driven a series of \u201canti-system\u201d political victories, such as the election of President Trump, and a rise in <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/worldhappiness.report\/ed\/2025\/trusting-others-how-unhappiness-and-social-distrust-explain-populism\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">political polarization<\/a>. According to the study, the share of American people who trust others has declined by almost half since the 1970s, dropping to 30 percent from 50 percent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cFar-left voters have a higher level of social trust, while right-wing populists have a very low level of social trust,\u201d the report says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For the eighth year in a row, Finland took the top spot in the rankings. Of course, not everyone in Finland <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/04\/01\/world\/europe\/finland-happiness-optimism.html\" title=\"\">is happy with the survey<\/a>, which essentially asks residents of countries to rate their own happiness. The study accounts for the last three years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Thursday, during a panel discussion about the report in Washington, D.C., Leena-Kaisa Mikkola, Finland\u2019s ambassador to the United States, offered several theories for why the Finns have been so happy for so long. They included trust among fellow citizens and in the educational system, proximity to nature and \u201cweekly sauna sessions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cOur American friends, you smile and laugh much more than we do,\u201d Ms. Mikkola said during the panel discussion, which was hosted by the digital news outlet Semafor. \u201cBut happiness for us is maybe being content.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In an interview, Ms. Mikkola said Finland had other structural advantages over the United States, including its size.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cIn a small country, there is also perhaps more of this awareness that we need each other,\u201d she said. \u201cIn a bigger country, you can somehow box yourself into different corners<em class=\"css-2fg4z9 e1gzwzxm0\">.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Costa Rica (No. 6) and Mexico (No. 10) entered the Top 10 for the first time, and other countries like Lithuania (16th, up from 19th) and Slovenia (19th, up from 21st) continued to move up in the rankings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">During the panel discussion, Catalina Crespo Sancho, Costa Rica\u2019s ambassador to the United States, likened her country\u2019s population to sloths \u2014 in a good way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThey\u2019re very slow, yes. But nobody wants to eat them,\u201d Ms. Sancho said. \u201cThey do not want to eat anyone or any of the other animals in the forest. They get along with everyone. All the animals get along with them.
