Kennedy, there appeared to be no redactions, those blacked-out sections that typically dot sensitive material, even once it is declassified, to mask confidential or compromising data.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Critics said that failure was evidence of an F.B.I. rush to vet material released after a president&#8217;s demand. And it exposed at least one C.I.A. agent\u2019s complete personnel file and the Social Security numbers for hundreds of other people.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">They belonged to congressional staff members, intelligence researchers, a former ambassador and scores more. Many of them are still alive, and they discovered on Wednesday that the White House had leaked their personal information to the world.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">President Trump\u2019s supporters praised the documents\u2019 release as government transparency at its finest. But that was not how William A. Harnage, a former government contractor, said he felt when he learned from a reporter that his Social Security number had surfaced in a file from 1977.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cI consider it almost criminal,\u201d said Mr. Harnage, 71.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Administration officials knew before the documents went out that releasing them without redactions would mean some personal information would be exposed, according to one person with knowledge of the effort that was granted anonymity to discuss the deliberations. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">It was almost inevitable. Members of Mr. Trump\u2019s national security team were surprised by his abrupt announcement, made on Monday during a tour of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, that he would release what he said would be 80,000 documents the next day.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Though they had been preparing the records since Mr. Trump <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/23\/us\/politics\/trump-declassify-jfk-mlk-assassinations.html?searchResultPosition=35\" title=\"\">signed an executive order<\/a> shortly after his inauguration mandating their release, his announcement <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/us\/politics\/national-security-officials-jfk-documents.html\" title=\"\">set off a scramble<\/a> by officials who were forced to pore over the documents for hours trying to assess the risks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Tulsi Gabbard, the director of National Intelligence, championed the untouched pages.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPresident Trump is ushering in a new era of maximum transparency,\u201d <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DNIGabbard\/status\/1902136765953032472\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">she wrote in an X post<\/a> on Tuesday. \u201cToday, per his direction, previously redacted JFK Assassination Files are being released to the public with no redactions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cPromises made, promises kept.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Trump himself has expressed little interest in the files\u2019 contents, telling The New York Times in September 2021 that he was \u201cnot that curious\u201d about the papers.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">He considered releasing the Kennedy files during his first term. \u201cThe reason I did that was because I thought it was appropriate,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you have something that\u2019s so sacredly secret, it really makes it sound very bad. I think they maybe got it right, probably got it right. Let people examine it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">That\u2019s not how Judy K. Barga, who supports the president, sees it.
