Kennedy on Tuesday started a race to find a revelation, as journalists, historians and amateur sleuths scoured the pages in hopes of finding something, anything, that could be considered consequential.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Instead, the big reveal was that there wasn\u2019t much of a reveal at all. Here are the biggest takeaways of the blockbuster that wasn\u2019t.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-7c90c91f\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Decades of secrecy protected C.I.A. spycraft, not a second gunman.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">For years, as the government has declassified and published documents related \u2014 some very tenuously \u2014 to the Kennedy assassination, the assumption expressed by conspiracy theorists and some historians has been that anything still being withheld must be big. Even Kennedy\u2019s nephew, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., now the nation\u2019s top health official, had long called for the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/jfk-assassination-files\/rfk-jr-kennedy-documents?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">release of all the documents<\/a> related to his uncle\u2019s death.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But with the release of nearly 64,000 pages by the National Archives, including some that had previously been rendered opaque by redactions, it is becoming clear that something else might have been behind the decades of secrecy: protecting the sources and occasionally unsavory practices of U.S. intelligence operations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Rather than reveal what Robert F. Kennedy Jr. once <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/wabcradio.com\/episode\/why-is-rfk-jr-running-for-president-let-rfk-j-r-explain-to-you-and-john-catsimatidis\/\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">claimed<\/a> was \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d that the C.I.A. was involved in the Kennedy assassination, the files are filled with details about the agency\u2019s agents and informants, covert actions and budget lines. The secrets, it seems, were the small details, not any big news.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-655af896\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">The release produced few revelations but plenty of collateral damage.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">While the documents revealed little to challenge the known facts about the assassinations of Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy and <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/mlk-jr-fbi-surveillance-records-unsealed.html\" title=\"\">the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.<\/a>, this might not be the end of declassifications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Justice Department <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/politics\/mlk-jr-fbi-surveillance-records-unsealed.html\" title=\"\">on Wednesday moved to unseal F.B.I. surveillance records<\/a> involving Dr. King, over the objections of those concerned that revelations about the civil rights leader\u2019s private life will be used to tarnish his legacy.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Others will be affected directly by the document release, too: Among the new files released are accounting records that include the Social Security numbers of dozens of congressional employees from the late 1970s. Some of those people are still alive, including Judy K. Barga, 80, who once worked as a government contractor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">She said she was surprised to learn that her private information had been included in the files, and unsure how to remedy the situation. \u201cPeople\u2019s private information should be kept private,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-62e5563f\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">Value is in the eye of the beholder.<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The latest trove of documents may not have thrilled the general reader, and its disorganized release did not make the files easy to navigate. But for historians and scholars, there were some gems to be unearthed in reading between the lines.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A summary of a 693-page secret C.I.A. report from 1975, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/03\/19\/us\/jfk-assassination-files\/63ada391-aae3-5d71-8c4e-c7ecd16b263a?smid=url-share\" title=\"\">for example,<\/a> touches on cases where the agency \u201cmay have exceeded its mandate.\u201d But there were also references to station chiefs, overseas break-ins, illegal surveillance and various \u201cextremely sensitive\u201d operations. \u201cIt\u2019s such a catalog of agency \u2018bad acts,\u2019\u201d said David J. Garrow, a historian with deep experience in intelligence files.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-11b6057\"><span>Trump said 80,000 pages would be released. We got about 64,000.<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">On Monday, President Trump said he would release 80,000 pages of documents related to the assassination within 24 hours. There would be no redactions, he said. That sent <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/live\/2025\/03\/18\/us\/jfk-mlk-rfk-assassination-files\" title=\"\">national security officials scrambling<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-5\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In two document dumps on Tuesday evening, about 64,000 of those documents were made public. Some of them did indeed have information blocked off. But that\u2019s 16,000 files short of what Mr. Trump promised. Are there more coming?<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"css-15h6bi9 e1gnsphs0\" id=\"link-63800cb0\"><span><strong class=\"css-8qgvsz ebyp5n10\">There was just enough to keep the conspiracy theorists going. (There will always be enough.)<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">There may not be anything that can <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/03\/18\/books\/review\/john-f-kennedy-assassination-conspiracy-theory.html\" title=\"\">satisfy the conspiracy theorists<\/a> who are certain that there is information still missing from the public record. The theories that took hold immediately after the killing were only amplified by the investigations that were meant to quash them. The film \u201cJ.F.K.,\u201d released in 1991, gave new life to even more. One man wrote to officials repeatedly, claiming for years that he alone <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.archives.gov\/files\/research\/jfk\/releases\/2025\/0318\/104-10431-10102.pdf\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">knew more than the government was letting on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The Warren Commission, which was established in 1963 to investigate the Kennedy assassination, <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/timesmachine.nytimes.com\/timesmachine\/1964\/09\/28\/118537710.html?pageNumber=16\" title=\"\">explicitly tried to discredit conspiracy theories<\/a>. (It didn\u2019t work.) Then there was the <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/10\/26\/us\/politics\/trump-jfk-release.html\" title=\"\">1992 law<\/a> that ordered papers related to the killing be made public within 25 years, with limited exceptions. (That didn\u2019t quiet the doubters, either.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">By <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/07\/16\/us\/politics\/biden-jfk-assassination-papers.html\" title=\"\">2023<\/a>, 99 percent of documents had been disclosed, and now 64,000 more have been added to the record.
