SoftBank, which bought Arm in 2016, has been working to have chips based on Arm technology used more widely and for different tasks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cThe future of artificial superintelligence requires breakthrough computing power,\u201d Masayoshi Son, SoftBank\u2019s chairman and chief executive, said in prepared remarks. \u201cAmpere\u2019s expertise in semiconductors and high-performance computing will help accelerate this vision, and deepens our commitment to A.I. innovation in the United States.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-1\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">SoftBank said it would operate Ampere as a wholly owned subsidiary under its own name.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The sale comes amid a flurry of deals and shifting alliances driven by a furious demand for the chips used to power A.I. applications such as OpenAI\u2019s ChatGPT. SoftBank, in particular, has announced a series of transactions in a bid to play a bigger role in the field.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">In its splashiest move to date, Mr. Son joined President Trump in January to announce <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/01\/21\/technology\/trump-openai-stargate-artificial-intelligence.html\" title=\"\">an initiative called Stargate<\/a>, alongside Sam Altman, OpenAI\u2019s chief, and Larry Ellison, chairman and founder of the software maker Oracle, which is Ampere\u2019s largest investor and customer.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Mr. Son, Mr. Altman and Mr. Ellison said Stargate would invest as much as $500 billion to build an array of U.S. data centers to power the operations of OpenAI, starting with a location in Texas. Nvidia was listed as a key technology partner for the venture; it supplies chips called graphics processing units, or GPUs, which account for the bulk of A.I. calculations.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Another kind of chip also plays central roles in A.I. These are the microprocessors designed by Intel, Advanced Micro Devices and Arm that handle general-purpose computing calculations. These chips, which work alongside GPUs and are called \u201chost\u201d processors, manage A.I. jobs such as building special software programs called models. One microprocessor is typically used for every four Nvidia GPUs sold.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-2\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">These microprocessors are also sometimes used to handle an A.I. task called \u201cinferencing,\u201d which includes providing answers to queries in chatbots. Up to now, chips from Intel and AMD accounted for nearly all A.I. host processors and microprocessors used for inferencing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-3\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">But some influential companies want to change that. Nvidia has begun heavily pushing Arm processors as an option for host microprocessors instead of Intel or AMD chips.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">A lot of money is at stake. IDC, a market research firm, predicts that the market for microprocessors sold for A.I. will grow to $33 billion by 2030 from $12.5 billion in 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">AMD and Intel have pointed out that shifting to Arm can require laborious changes to software. They added that Nvidia was not exclusively backing Arm technology and still supported their chips as an option along with its latest GPUs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">\u201cNvidia is still a significant partner of ours,\u201d said Ronak Singhal, chief architect of Intel\u2019s Xeon line of data center chips.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<div data-testid=\"companionColumn-4\">\n<div class=\"css-53u6y8\">\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Ampere has mainly marketed its microprocessors for general-purpose data center jobs. But it recently announced plans for a chip, called Aurora, that features up to 512 small calculating engines, a design the company says is especially suited for A.I. inferencing applications.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">The company, led by Ren\u00e9e James, a former Intel executive, has had some successes. But the biggest spenders in the sector \u2014 giant companies like Amazon, Google and Microsoft \u2014 have lately focused more on developing their own microprocessors based on Arm technology, rather than relying on the start-up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Oracle is an exception. It has offered online services powered by Ampere chips, and has disclosed equity and debt investments in the company. As of May, Oracle said it held a 29 percent stake in Ampere; it put the value of its investments, after accounting for losses, at $1.5 billion.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">As part of the purchase, Oracle and Carlyle Group, the big private equity firm that is also a major Ampere investor, agreed to sell their stakes in Ampere, SoftBank said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"css-at9mc1 evys1bk0\">Bloomberg <a class=\"css-yywogo\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-02-05\/softbank-nears-deal-to-acquire-chip-designer-ampere\" title=\"\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> last month that SoftBank was near a deal to buy Ampere.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<aside class=\"css-ew4tgv\" aria-label=\"companion column\"\/><\/div>\n<p><script
